Restoring old cars... is THE thing... GTAm would tell ya the same.. also, owning an old car, is classy...

Think about 20 years from now, Devinda in the Z, Charitha19 in the Asitna, GTAm in the Alfetta... cruising the streets of Colombo... will be classy, eh..?

i agree owning a old car is classy and restoring cars is quite a boastful hobby. but i'm sure now ever old car falls to that category.

disclaimer : no pun intended on anyone

Well in my view its extremely painful rather than boastful xXx. I can write a book about what I've gone thru with mechanics, tinkers, painters, electricians etc. I'm sure that I would have had a lot more money now if I was not crazy about these cars. Unfortunately or not I happen to be and well its done.

Anyway last Sunday I had a blast with the Alfetta at the Classic Car Club run. Pushed it a bit for the first time and scared my passengers who were rolling around in their seats.

That drive was enough to neutralize my 4.5 years of torturous anxiety in restoring it. Mind you its still not 100% complete. little bits more.

The MR2 is more of an everyday car (I actually go to work in it in "that" state :D ). I won't "Restore" it. I'll just get it into decent shape and enjoy the drive. Its nice and fast and its got brilliant handling, but somehow it fails to fire a passion in me like the Alfas :( .

My advice to anyone who takes on a restoration, don't do it unless you have a LOT of patience and are crazy enough to put in money even when you're running low.

Far from it xxx.

I think GTAm has pointed out some points (sic) already but .....

Old car restoration = not for the faint hearted and surely not for anyone with common sense lol.

Or else why spend 3 times the amount the car is worth?

Take me a few years ago, bought a Ford escort Mk1 two door for 50 K, spent 350K on a total rebuild, and then sold it (ma Dad actually) for 75K !!! as I was out of the country. I paid 75K for two Nissan Silvia seats alone !!!

But it all comes down to your love for cars and the pleasure in driving these no nonsense straight forward and involving cars. Passion is a stange thing, yesterday I saw a 6 shri 504. One word. Immaculate , white with a swiss sticker. Ac on, driver driven lady lolling in the back seat. I tried to take some pics( of the car) and me wifey bawled me out lol.

But seeing that car in such a nice state really gladdened my heart. That I suppose is what we "get off on" . It need not be a fancy collectors car but any car looked after with love is a joy to behold (IMHO)

Having said that, seeing GT Ams Alfetta restored is indeed a sight to warm the soul.

How about a old Datsun two door near my house driven by an old ( 80 + ) couple ? Or the lovely Minis and Beetles.

Have you noticed the amount of old Jap cars out now? No one can afford the new cars I guess....I know I certainly will not pay 35 lakhs for a :angry-smiley-030: Corolla...........

So old cars = love, passion and heart ache. reminds you of your girlfriends eh? :P

old cars restoration = not boastful but just what turns us on ...yummy

get in there and do it.......lol

BTW this topic now needs changing I feel

GTAm, Prad, i can understand the amount of work going into restoring cars. heck finding parts for certain 'current' models are pretty challenging itself. what i meant by a boastful hobby is, chatting about restoring a nice classic/old car will be far more interesting over a drink than talking about carrying out a similar job on an ordinary car you come across day to day.

one thing is very evident though you boys car enthusiasm is in whole new league.

Hmm.. tough one.. How about, ascend A to M, E to R and subtract 83 from the numerical value?

Any of you MFoc-kers  checked out the Savanna Convertible that was advertised in the papers? Any thoughts on that?

was wondering what the history of that car is??

never seen it on the road..

does anyone know if it even retains its original motor??

The guys who advertised it are well known fibbers in the Italian car circle. Yet I phoned them and they insisted that the original rotary motor is intact. Mileage said to be an incredible 60k km.

its not too much of a strech i guess , given that its more than likely that ppl didn't run it given its rotary...
