Hilux Single To Double Cab Conversions - What's Next??

Question

I've seen plenty of single cab Land rovers converted to full body and double cabs, but this is the first time I'm hearing about Hilux conversions. Came across the following on another well known vehicle website...

Im sure this will lead to future problems. One LR owners I know is already in trouble.

First being the number of seats on document. Next the registration type Eg-Lorry/Dual purpose. Mind you big bucks of Tax waived off during importing of Lorry type and cabs.

Sure soon the authorities will start taking action in this regard.Govt is seriously short of currency and want to earn each and every penny on import taxes and especially over automobiles.

I wouldn’t take take that risk. would you?

There are quite a few conversions being done. Been following the progress of one such job at a garage which I take my car to.

The funny thing about this advert is that he claims that the Agents Warranty is still valid..... :rolleyes:

lol !! In addition to invalidating the warranty in a rather dramatic manner; carving the cab up willy-nilly probably takes away from the structural integrity of vehicle and safety cell quite a bit. The handling's probably going to be off too due to body flex etc. Lost tax revenues aside; the Government should crack down on conversions like this due to the safety issues that are associated with them.

well said mini, have seen a conversion of a mahendra maxi truck which was a single and now it's almost like a willys double cab. I asked from the owner, a friend of mine, whether he's aware of the legal implications of what he did. To my suprise he said "no". I didn't wanna scare him and i didn't further comment. But i'm sure he'll run into troubles with this frankestien double cab with LB plates. People should act more civilse and should realise there's something call law out there and not knowing or not aware of law is not an excuse when it comes to breaking of law.

Lot of vans with modified to carry passengers are running in Srilanka rural areas all over the country with so called maka bass modifications to the Van owners request if you go to a Village Sunday Fair you can observe them.

I agree with you but if you see number single cabs had come to this country from Thailand with carryboy high and low rear fiber glass bodyCabs specialy for NAWARA

A leading importer filed a case against Srilanka Customs confiscating few cabs.

Informing importer cabs were under invoiced For duty purposes.

Then Importer went to court verdict was in favor of the Importer

All those cabs was returned by a court order to the importers premises few days back.

I did fix more than 12 of fitting rear CARRYBOY Fiberglas units to an another Importer after complain about water leak.

As there was a water leak problem on rainy days in to the rear cab which I sorted out.

If you go to the web CARRYBOY Fiber glass rear cabs you will find so many modifications which are done in Thailand.

Few days back I saw very neatly done D*MO Batta as a 9 seat Passenger Van with sliding glasses.

China has a small 3 cylinder van which is sold in Srilanka only the chassis less than 0.9 Million Rupees Ideal to convert to a passenger van it is little bigger than D*MO Batta.

Totally Flabbergasted. What relevance does all this have to the question of roadworthyness and legality? Did you know that ANY modification to your vehicle legally requires the written approval of the commissioner of motor vehicles? That is the LAW, the current law under which people with loud exhausts are harassed, since they don't have any way of checking a legal decibel limit.

Vehicles maybe running about modified, that is because the LAW is sleeping and if the LAW wakes up, those vehicles are in trouble. People can take a risk because they think the law is sleeping, but it is still illegal and if the law wakes up, they are still in trouble.

Also there is rule on these forums (Think of it as the LAW here) that unless you are paying the website (autolanka) for advertising, advertising your products/services are NOT allowed. So I would appreciate it if you would stop advertising your services of fixing carryboys and such. If you want to do it, contact Madhawa and work something out.

you sounded like as if these modifications are done in mass makes them legal sort of. Motor traffic act demands even a change of color should informed to rmv through change of attribute. However there can be some changes which are not allowed. Such as number of passengers, which is one of determination criteria of the duty of a vehicle. I'm well aware of such maka baas modifications done in rural areas including coverting flat roof to high roof again a change in body type. Still these modifications would not make it legal, just that people do and get away about it due to lack of administration. Would appreciate if people like you can refrain from encouraging people from such illegal modifications. Also note that those fiberglass modifications you mentioned nothing compared to the ones being done around and i'm sure that's part of blowing your own trumpet.

woah, you want me to explain? Due to difficulties in understanding or what? This topic discuss about single to double cab conversions and you try to explain some fixing you've done to some fiberglass made fake body components which doesn't have relevence to the thread and surely blowing your own trumpet. Understood?

I dare to venture back on topic, but in a ##### of last month I recall seeing an advert for the extension of these smart cab/vigos that have flooded the market recently. It claimed to offer the space of a car for rear seat passengers, and it too claimed not to void the warranty.

Its means i'm rolling my eyes. In normal human behaviour/communication that is used to give a synical or sarcastic tone.
