That is totally irresponsible behavior! I mean racing on public roads. What about the innocent people who can get killed or injured, and what about their families?

i dunno,but all the facebook organized drags tend to end in disaster,if you really wanna go contact a drag veteran personally and get the details.

it's sad that we don't have proper drag strips with the required safety levels etc but taking to the public roads and putting other people's lives in danger is not at all cool!

Those traffic cameras they were talking about....few should be hooked up on GP to completely take away this street racing thing...

As MD said...not all people know how to even safely organize an illegal street race with required safety...

Maybe with motorsports in high gear now the government or even a private company would build a proper drag strip

I think that pink EG8 lost it under braking at the Library end and shunted really badly. That kid was lucky to escape with his life.

Just FYI to all you guys, having been to a few of the drags myself i gotta say that the majority of the participants are very responsible people and (touchwood) the incidents have been negligible apart from one or two fools who have tried to show off and come unstuck.

So tarring all of the SL drag participants with the "Irresponsible" brush is a bit unfair IMO.

Its buggers who do things like create FB groups to show off that end up causing all the issues.

in last one year there is a set of bikers who come to Drags every Saturday and do up and down runs all the time, ride on wrong side, do stunts and when they see a car is moving they follow the car and try to race, sometime back one biker crashed with a merc and after few weeks the CBR guy crashed, after one month we went to see whats going on, the bike gang is there and no car can do runs cus they will follow u, after few weeks we heard the pink Honda crashed, dint went there for past 6 months so dont know whats going on now.

On a positive note...

I don't know how many of you guys were actually there when the DRAG scene was hot, I have been to many events my self and the event was well prepared and safety was maintained by way of blocking the road from both ends before each rounds they dragged cars.. A scout car(s) were on patrol to check the strip for any unsuspecting persons or vehicles were un-knowingly been driven on road to what ever their destinations were.. Road commuters were allowed to pass without delaying them since we had the whole night to race! And the races went on till early morning pass 2-3 am!

Best part was the cops! when they would pull over and ask us to clear out! so each time cops would turn up we would disperse in groups to new locations! like New Nuge... Vehicles were with full sounds! it was like a carnival in the middle of the night!!!! Many used to look forwards to SATURDAY NIGHT!!!! Let out the stress by watching and challenging for kicks! each knew their limits! and NO CRAZY BUGGERS to spoil the fun!

The hot part was the SUPRA & the RX7!

Those were the days!!!!!

Those were the days indeed. Are these ones organized by the original crowd, or a bunch of jokers who weren't even there?

Although I didn't really interact with the participants, it was all good fun. At least it was when I was going (I can't remember exactly when, mustve been 2002-2004?) but then it started to get too crowded, as well as invaded by weirdos causing problems. I stopped going after it sort of moved away from green path as I could never keep track of where the event was after that and didn't have time. I remember most of the original draggers and organizers used to post on autolanka (some of them still do). I have no idea what happened to some of them though. Imran, Vishiznet, Nigel, DOHC Vrash n Burn [Rob], etc etc and all, are they still in the country or what?

Shamin's Evo 4 is the white one ya? What is he doing now and where is that car? I haven't seen it in years. I don't remember the ford laser unfortunately.

yeah both evo's were white those days, sorry mate no idea about Shamins EVO, That Ford event ended funny way, both cars were head to head and as always no one knew who won, but that was so fun, yeah i do remember that Soluna and asankas Honda gang too. the first ever Drag car i saw was Dilon's AC3, and hes the man responsible me coming to Drags too Me and Ashan was in same batch , Tharindu was one batch senior to us and Diloan was out of the school that time

The EVO4 is now owned by Dilshan he uses it as his daily runner...as for Shaminda he is behind bars the correct place for his attitude

Most of the Vetrans who started this off are very responsible...its the racer wannabes who come in some riced out car or bike trying to look cool that end up crashing their cars....i remember a certain Diesel Dr. Sunny trying to race with Jay in His EK9 on the way to rathmalana he ended up crashing the car into some parked vehicles near the St Mary's church.....

Yup got a point there about this going down from generation to generation.... but the creators of this group seem to be attention seekers.... the picture galery consists of no drag racing pictures at all

I'm no attention seeker and the FB group was created by a friend just for the newbies at drags to meet up. Actually, not all those set-up races work. most don't show up.

I have been to drags when it was at it's peak, but I was just a lil boy then! ;-) these days, it's got pretty boring. There is this bike gang that comes always and I think their ridin is very risky. I'd say most of the cars are driven very responsibly.

I kno a lotta people loathe this as a public menace but then, this is the life some enjoy. it can be conducted in a safe way, if the right initiatives are taken. The road condition has deteriorated too. not very good.

I just wanted it to be how it was before.

Lets see how things work out.

As one generation retires, a new generation must emerge! :-)

BTW its nice to see you all creating Fb groups and try to make things happen but there is no point inviting every tom and jerry in ur FB friends list and end of the day as usual the bikers, few cars with neons were there, the last time i came to GP there were no proper cars, every day two or three Honda's race with each other. now the SOHC boys are not there, very few super cars, also there are set of people who hate when they hear GP and Drags, ignore them, all u guys has to do is try to contact the old Drag guys who comes now and organize a good event

Also AL is not a good place to talk, about Drags wrong crowd

As you just said, I kinda realized AL is not the place for this! :-) Wut you said is true. very few good performance cars come now. the few good1z that sometimes come dont even race. Its got sooo boring. The biker gang seems to be ruinin it all by not knowin how to behave. they arouse the cops with their wild antics! I havent been to GP in a month now coz it's plain boring. no good cars and no good races. Hope someone takes the initiative to revive it. I'm not commenting on this post again!
