On the contrary, regular lithium batteries have a massive shelf life, and are used as long life power supplies for low power usage applications. However, rechargeable lithium batteries build up internal resistance over time if they are left in a charged state for too long. We use them in our model aircraft, and the rule we follow is to charge them to 40% capacity when they are being stored i.e. not used for longer than 2 weeks.
