Dear guys ,

Please advice on the wisdom ( or lack of it) in repairing a leaking Steering rack.

I saw recently in HI* ADD an advertisement regarding guarenteed steering rack repairs.

what should I do ? repair or replace with a re-con unit. ?

your advice is taken seriously.

Depends on what is wrong with it. If the problem can be resolved with part replacement economically using good quality parts (either a brand like 555 or genuine parts) then a repair is the best option. If the repair would involve a lot of machine and lathe work then replacement with a recon unit will make more sense.

Dear Don,

I mean this is a hydrolic oil leak in the steering mechanism. Oil leaks out from the tie rod boot.

what is my best option? is hydrolic side repair in steering rack successfull ?

I had a leak on the alfa steering rack from both ends. Found the parts in Panchikwatte and fixed it, so far no issues. Only cost was the oil seals (rs 5500), oil and other small stuff. Around 10K altogether.

It depends on the type of vehicle. What is your vehicle? I know that a Rav4 recon rack may cost anywhere from Rs. 40k.

This happened to my car and at that time when i asking from garages most of them are recommending a replace with recon one. Their point is as the shaft is worn and usually uneven we need custom made oil seals and have to do lot of lathe work.As they are reluctant to get the responsibility and those repair kits are hard to find-I live in matale, checked in matale kandy dambulla and kurunegala- I replaced it with a recon one. My car is CE110 and it cost me 10k.

If the shaft is worn, then you are better off with a recon unit. It won't be hard to get hold of one for your car for sure.

I took my vehicle to a garage to fix a power steering leak in my Toyota Corolla AE100 1991. They said that they have to replace multiple parts. So I provided parts for them. And then they told me that "We can't take the responsibility because the parts I have provided are not genuine" and as I assumed the problem was not fixed. The leak is still here. The parts were bought from a reputed store (KOYO brand). What should I do? I had to pay the garage and without them fixing the problem. Please help.

So why did you not say you will assume the responsibility if the repair is not permanent and get them to fix it anyway ?

Do you have the option of returning the parts ?

There are steering rack refurbishing places. There work comes with a warranty so  I would have just taken the rack to one of those places and asked them to refurbish it. If I cannot return the parts and I still have the receipts and stuff maybe you can talk to them about them buying the parts off of you...or use your parts for the refurbishment (but then they might reduce the warranty period ?)

Sri Lankans need to get over this whole "Genuine Part" mentality just because a part comes in a box with a Toyota/Nissan/Mitsubishi box. The Genuine part is so called manufactured by other companies and Toyota/Nissan/Mitsu only puts it in a box that has the car brand on it to certify that it came from an authorized parts provider (Koyo, KYB, etc...). In fact in Japan they do not even do that...you get the original part manufacturers box with just a Toyota part number and tracking sticker on it. E.g In Japan there are no brake pads in nice Toyota boxes..the brake pads the Toyota dealers give are DriveJoy pads with the above sticker (drive joy is Japan's largest brake component manufacturer and is 80%+ owned by Toyota)..a friend of mine sent a set of brake pads upon a friends request who wanted the  Made in Japan - Toyota Japan part. After mailing it to Sri Lanka his so called friend turned it down and did not pay the guy because it did not come in the so called Toyota box...what is funny is he had sent him pics of the Toyota box pads...ironically they were from Thailand distributed by Toyota Thailand..  In African and other South East Asian countries, that Toyota/Nissan box or sticker has some value because it assures that the part was supplied by the local agent of the car. In Sri Lanka it really does not mean much because not even god himself would know where these parts are coming from. ..Okay...end of rant...

When it comes  to genuine parts I can recommend  AISIN and SEIKEN brake components from the two famous importers from Panchikawatte since I've seen the original shipping docs coming from Japan. sorry if I am violating any forum rules here.

I did tell them to fix it anyway with my parts. They have fixed it at that moment. The leak was no there for a short period of time (one month). Now the leak has started again. Is there a trusted place to repair this steering rack? Or is it better to replace the thing entirely?

You can take it to a steering rack repair place...they usually give a one year warranty...I beleive someone made some recommendations on the forum sometime back.

You can buy a used rack....but then that does not necessarily guarantee it is going to be trouble free (you never know the actual circumstances or the original condition). Typically used parts are recommended to be rebuilt/refurbished before install or at the first sign of an issue.

Buying a brand new one is not going ot be possible.

As suggested best bet is to take it to the refurbishment place which give a grantee and get the cost. Also see the cost of a recon unit. When buying a recon unit, need to have someone who knows how to check it inspect the unit before you buy it.
