Read the responses in reverse. This is why I laughed at the clues you left :)
This was like the time a certain group of people were so engrossed on one thing that none of them noticed that one person was standing there stark naked as his sarong had fallen down in all the commotion.

Yes this would be the 1st Gen Previa, what we have in Sri Lanka are called Estima Lucida. Over to you @Duan27

@amsandun I think you didnt see the clues to the answer.

Here’s the next one-

Saw one on classifieds a while back, haven’t seen one personally tho

Lucida font family of course... 😄 And also struck my mind why you called me esteemed while I'm not...😂 Yeah guess I missed them anyway and then wondered whether there was a font named Toyota or Previa in MS Office Suite.

I also missed the clue tbh, thought it was just @Gummybr being a bit eccentric 😂😅,  shouldn’t have overlooked something straight under our noses 😂

May I? 🫠If going by "Sirasa Lakshapathi" type answering... as a child I used to often see and get in some of the older jeep models made by the same company who made this car. They were available in my father's office. And I was shocked to hear that my current car also powered by an engine originally designed by this manufacturer.

So there maybe so many CRVs around and someone may think YRVs are yet to come if only alphabetical order was a must. 😄

So, is this not a Daihatsu YRV?

Gladly. So here you go...

car.jpg.9512d20825ff401197ddbd7fb6fedcaf.jpg

Someone may recognize in a heartbeat. I'm not sure if this same model is/was available in SL but other older and new models are here. Why I chose this because I was following a car related to this couple of days ago from Kirulapone to Nugegoda on the way home and did some search. 😄

Hmm...I thought it was a Camry Gracia Wagon (in Japan this model of Camry was called Camry Gracia because the normal Camry was used for the narrow body variant). However, the fact you said there are newer and older models in SL I am not too sure. I have seen the CG Wagon and the Mark II Qualis (Mark II wagon based on the same car) used as hearses.

I indeed thought you might be the first to solve this. You’re correct and it says XV20 Camry Wagon alongside the Sedan built during 1996-2000 according to wiki. I couldn't find the exact photo of the thumbnail I posted above so here's another full pic of the same model.

Actually by older and newer models I referred to Toyota Camry we see regularly in SL not specifically this wagon model. What I was following was a Mark 2 Grande x100 model I think. Looking it up, I came across the Qualis and found that it’s originally a Camry Wagon 😀

So it’s your floor iRage.

Can someone please take my turn. I am travelling for work and not sure if I can find a quiz car in any decent amount of time.

Mind if I go ahead? I will take this opportunity and post something different. Posting two tail lamps from cars from the 1990s. One of them came in two guises (body styles) and the other came in three guises. One was produced from 1995 - 2002 and the other 1995 - 2003. I expect the answer to have the make model and model code.

Should be interesting.

Can I guess this as BMW 5 Series E39. And it is the first tail light you have put up there. It came in 2 styles as Sedan and Touring Wagon right? This light was so familiar to me but couldn't say exactly. So I did a series of google image search as "Toyota tail lights 1995-2003", then Toyota was replaced by other famous Japanese makes and so on.

After main Japanese makes, my focus was the European makes and my favorite one was BMW. Tada! 😄 I got what I was after in the very first row.

Still no clue about your other photo.

Yes you got the first one right, BMW E39 it is, as you rightly said it came in Sedan and Station Wagon form and they were manufactured from 1995 - 2003, although development started two years ago.

What about the other one?

Funny you should mention Toyota. The modern (re-incarnated) version of the car is used by Toyota and rebadged as a much-loved Toyota model that was there from 1973 till 1999 (much to the disappointment of the enthusiasts of this model). The re-incarnated version in available only in one body style.

Just so that you get what @iRage says, he means the other car which @amsandun couldnt guess.

BTW @iRage who copied whom? I remember when I had the P11 a customer said that it looked like a BMW when I visited his home. And sure enough there is a bit of a Hoffmeister kink in the Primera rear window, and the overall look from side on looked very European.

OT: I remember I had paper adverts of them old cars and the Primera ad had the German, UK and Japan flags. Japanese and UK flags I can imagine but the German flag do you remember what it was about?

The German aspect was mostly ideological. The Primera was conceived as a car explicitly targeted at European markets. Nissan was quite vocal about its design following German automotive technology standards/ideologies...precision... balance...sportyness...advanced tech...autobahn, and yada yada yada.... So you could say Japan copied from Germany. Even the unveiling of the car (P10) was strategic. Instead of Tokyo or even Geneva, Nissan made it a point to reveal/launch it in Frankfurt.

Sorry for all my ignorance here, but since you guys are talking about a modern Toyota and Nissan Primera P10/P11, I am in confuse. Is the second one a Nissan P10/P11?

The newer version of the car that you missed (pic2) is also rebranded as a Toyota with a name plate which had been dead since 1999.

Nope the 2nd pic is not of a Primera, the discussion is more or less about who copied who in relation to the two pics I posted. Primera part was off topic.

still the Star that it once was

Star  it is... Only one model comes to mind if Toyota and Star is connected, the Starlet. All clues and information makes sense now. I didn't know it was re-badged by Suzuki Baleno in 2019 and of course it is sad to hear that. So the answer would be Suzuki Baleno 1995 model. The original model is said to be Suzuki Cultus Crescent though.

Hatchback, Sedan and Wagon are the 3 variants.

PS: Did a "suzuki tail lights 1995-2002" image search and it was there too 😆 Suzuki slipped my head yesterday when I was searching as it feels more Indian than Japanese now. But I think it was a good thing otherwise I won't know about this Starlet story.

There you are, take the floor @amsandun. Suzuki is more Japanese than you think, its a shame that it is associated with the Indian models since the Indian models dropped the Maruti part from its name.

There are more Toyota's branded Suzuki in India and other parts of the world, including the Corolla.

If you still didnt get it after @iRage's clue "Let to believe it is still the Star" you should be shot

🫢I must be half-shot then for not seeing "Let" clue but "Star" revealed it all.

Ok let's keep this going...

Yes...they are all descendants. It was a time Japanese manufacturers made multiple variants of the same car to appeal to different market segments and stuck random names on it :) So Cultus and Cultus Crescent were the JDM names, Baleno and Esteem were the other two used in Japan (later on) and export markets. Here is the thing though...the Cultus Crescent sedan was not very popular in Japan. It was priced at the same price point as the Corolla, Sunny, Lancer and Familia sedans. The latter cars were significantly more refined and better equipped as well.

So, a decent number of sedans in SL were Baleno sedans from export markets. There are Crescents but a bit more Balenos.

Not at all..Suzuki Japan has increased the number of models produced in India and are doing a lot of research on alternative fuel vehicles over there (they have engines running on poop) but they are very much Japanese. It is just that in Japan, most of the cars they sell and produce are Kei cars.

19 hours ago, amsandun said:

Yupp..the Baleno is sold as the Starlet and Glanza in developing markets. The Alto (?) is sold as the Vitz. In developed markets the Corolla Touring is sold as the Swace, the RAV4 as an ACROSS, the Noah/Voxy as the Suzuki Landy. It is all a part of Toyota's partnership with Suzuki to share and develop alternative fuel tech (Hybrids, etc..) and gaining access to dealersip networks.

That is a good thing for sure. Only thing is the feeling that you get when you're in an Indian made Suzuki is so Indian (Material quality, comfort etc..). I mean there could be much refined models as I've not being in every Indian made Suzukis. And we haven't embraced  latest Japanese beauties for such a long time that we kinda forgot how they used to be. 😄

Depends on the destined market I suppose. Suzuki just released the FRONX in Japan and the interior seems to be as good as any Japanese built crossover. Only time will tell I suppose. The Baleno was a bit of a let down but they seem to have gotten their act together.
