Dear friend, finding teak dashboard would be quite difficult for this model but I have seen few Toyota KDH 200 converted to "teak" in Sri Lanka.

What they does is they just remove the parts and apply some kinda paint, Ex: AC lovers/ Dashboard Din, etc.

The job was perfect and none could identify by its appearance!

I think most Japanese vehicles do not have real teak/oak panels as the Euro vehicles; I think it is just some kind of paint/vinyl job (correct me if I am wrong)

Unfortunately I dont any contact numbers but our forum ppl definitely will help u

Would you settle for kos over teak? I know a guy in Moratuwa who can source some nice old kos, but it's pricy. I'm cutting down the coconut tree in my yard next week, its dropping nuts on my roof and damaging stuff. You can have it if you want?

p.s. please respond in CAPS, we love it on AutoLanka.

the teak for the KDH series can be bought in japan as panels costs somewhere around 10,000LKR

exactly but there's no painting or anything, you can straight away buy the panels and fix them after removing the previous grey color panels

@Magnum,

Nope dude..they can be converted in Sri Lanka but I agree that those panels could also be imported!

Let us wait till some experts will guide us; my friend!

It all sounds a bit much to me, but to each his own, I suppose. Do any of you chaps have pictures of cars that have gotten this 'teak' treatment? It'd be interesting to look at before and after pictures...

I was wondering if any of you had pictures of an install done here in SL using either locally done up panels or pre-manufactured ones from overseas. I googled it as per the links below but really its the final product that matters, not pictures the manufacturers of such kits have up on their website. The links I found are:

http://www.carid.com/wood-dash-kits.html?gclid=CKWgu5TL3KoCFYfCKgod6AzF_A

http://www.dashkitspecialties.com/policies.html

Most of them look custom built, and I guess it has to be so, to try and replicate the level of fit and finish that a factory installed interior would have. Looking through some of the pictures I can't help but feel that in some cases the factory two tone plastic / plastic-metal finish was better, but then again that's just me. At best it seems like a look/product that has to be tastefully (and sparingly) done for best effect. Based on an opinion largely formed by viewing the tuk-tuks I see on the road; 'sparingly' and 'tastefully' are not adjectives that readily spring to one's mind when viewing the typical vehicle customization done on our shores. Which leads into why I asked whether anyone has 'before' and 'after' pictures of such customizations done in SL.

@ Kavvz ,

friend I am not trying to promote any product; I just wanna shared what I have seen. Definitely those panels are not like the one fixed to three wheelers but it looks more or less similar to factory fitted panels. I have no idea about the durability. Those panels aint real teak but vinyl painted.

I wasn't debating the merits of one product over the other, in fact the local adaptation maybe better that the product from overseas- I don't know as I've never done it or known anyone who had customized their car thus. Furthermore I didn't mean to say that you were promoting a paticular product. Sorry if that's how it sounded.

What I meant to say was: Does anyone have 'before' and 'after' pictures of vehicles that have had this customization done in Sri Lanka (be it using a local adaptation or custom made kits from overseas) as it seems tricky to tastefully customize the interior in such a way without it looking tacky.

I don't think ANY of these kits are real wood. They all look like they are made of synthetic materials (probably plastic or some sort of laminate). Besides most of the kits only cost $100-$200. No way you'd get real wood veneer for that price. Installation would be harder as well for wood machined to a thinness as shown, would be super fragile.

@Kavvz;

Nope dude, I just said that I am not promoting....

But you can see those real wood panels in luxury cars like Bentley,Rolls-Royce, Cadillac, or may even in some versions of Benz, BMW. They are made with oak/pine woods (some times; tree roots!) and all most all are hand-crafted and therefore each panels are different in texture/colour!!!

There were video demonstration telecasted in National Geographic regarding "Ultimate factory-Bentley", in that video they show how those wooden panels are made!

I think they do this using stickers on top of the existing plastic panels. You can buy kits for some vehicles on ebay. They also have carbon fibre look kits too. Personally I am not a big fan of these but each to their own :)

@ The Don,

I think it was some kind of paint work as they had done some parts like the frame of the ac air vents!!!

I am too not of a big fan of these kind of work but I am just telling what I have seen!
