Anti Rust Treatments.. Are They Worth?

Question

Posted

Several companies offer Anti-rust treatments to u der carriage of vehicles.

e.g. A*W - Wruth , Kl**npark- Rock Cote

It costs around 20,000/- to get this treatment. Since I am living nearby to the 'sea', I thought to get this done.

Have any one of you tried it? If so, which product would be the best ?

Is it really worth or effective in reducing rust?

Thanks a lot for all the expert comments.

'Hiran_j',

I have used Kleen Park Tuffcote in my Vehicles for last 15 years. I live on Galle road only 5 houses to the marine drive.

I have suffered plenty of damage due to corrosion from sea side air because air is full of salt.

New and Japanese used Vehicles due to above effect, before the Tuffcote treatment,

Tuffcote lasted more than 8 to 10 years without any damage from corrosion. Very effective treatment.

There is another product which is working electronically. H/A carried an advertisement of what I have mentioned.

You can get all details on the following link. it not available locally.

You see a lot of pick ups now coming in from UK – Most of these vehicles have rust and was discussed earlier in the forum.

A car was joint that I patronize quite often had a Navara ( Hoped I spelled the correctly ) apparently the chassis had corrosion but what they do is do a good wash and then give it a good under cote treatment.

I think this would help – and there shouldn’t be any issues after that right ? Any one with ideas on the process and specially will a buyers of these vehicles have any further issues ?

Definitely worth it. Our van had the TuffKote treatment done by Kleenpark as well, and back in 1998 they gave a 10 year guarantee as well.

Does anyone have a idea on how much extra weight gets added due to this coating ?

What I heard is its a bit think coating.

Yeah it's a thick coating which looks like the contents of a soft center caramel toffee. I have no idea what the additional weight is though.

Tips:

Check out the guarantees. Does the guarantee apply to subsequent rust damage or is it simply restricted to recoating if the product fails. Does the guarantee require regular inspections by the supplier. Are the inspections charged or free? ? Do they coat 100% of the underside? What's their strategy for coating mufflers and up into and around the engine-bay? Is the supplier likely to be around in 5 years or so

Used to be a big fan of anti-rust coatings (eg Endrust) in the past but not sure they are really necessary with modern vehicles. I still think that a good d-i-y squirt of Fish-oil around the door insides and the sills and so-on pays dividends. The gf wil complain, thogh, about the fishy smell in the car for a couple of weeks after the job is done.l

To be honest this chassy rust is very common in British vehicles thanks to salted roads in the winter. However through the natural life of the car it rarely is an issue over here and unless a vehicle has a known issue (like Land Rovers and Mini's) people don't even bother treating it. The treatment is called waxoiling.

Most of the time its just surface rust and does not harm the integrity of the vehicle.

I was told by someone that Subaru has omitted the under-seal rust protection coating on the Sti RAR, just to reduce a few Kgs of weight.

Some say that keeping the car in a closed concrete floored garage causes more rust than keeping the vehicle outside. Something to do with moisture vapour emission through the concrete carrying up alkaline salts into the air just above the floor.

It's also argued that with modern cars if rust does appear it's likely to be somewhere up around the wheel arches or on the wheel arch lips. And the suggestion is that those are the areas to regularly wash, monitor for paint-chips, and do a paint touch-up or a wax job when chips appear.
