miniace
"CRACKDOWN ON BEAT BARRELS AND SOUND GADGETS"-Daily Mirror 06/01/2012 "Police will crack down on motorists using beat-barrels, extremely loud horns and sound-producing gadgets on their vehicles when the new regulations gazetted under the National Environment Act come into effect this week. Environment Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa said the Act covered some four million motor vehicles ranging from three-wheelers to mega container carriers which had extraneous gadgets producing enhanced sound levels and thus leading to sound pollution. The new provisions spelt out the maximum sound at 105 decibels up to a distance of two meters from the vehicle in front and 93 decibels when the vehicle is in a stationary position. The minister said those who violate the new regulations enacted under the National Environment Act No. 47 of 1980 and known as the National Environmental (Vehicle Horns Regulations) No. 1 of 2011 would face spot fines or prosecution if the offence was repeated. The restrictions will not apply to ambulances, trains, fire engines, police vehicles and vehicles used by the armed forces or when it is necessary to convey information to the people in an emergency. Central Environmental Authority Chairman Charitha Herath said noise levels shall be measured in terms of sound pressure levels either by the use of a sound level meter or any other measuring equipment recommended by the CEA from time to time. He said a sound level meter would be calibrated before and after each series of measurements, using a Class 1 acoustic calibrator. The meters will be supplied by the CEA to policemen and the exercise will be carried out in close cooperation with the Motor Traffic Department." rover
They should remove the horns from all the private buses permanantly, and must do something about the silencers of those Leyland buses.

mazdaspeed
Problem is will they check the same on busses ????? Fore sure all car with beat's are going to get hassled even the ones which are legal & below the required level e.g stock Subaru's etc... Ur likely to get stopped by some dumb ass cop saying the exhaust is too loud – The ears of the cops have built in decibels reading capabilities – so he can tell the difference between what’s legal or not
SeanD
So will they check the SPL equidistant from each vehicle? Because there is a difference with every foot you move. And how can they prove this?
miniace
The most commonly used standard of noise testing is ISO 5130-2007 that requires three consecutive measurements to determine. The three readings taken at three specific RPMs.The maximum level recorded at any reading is taken as the final figure. The measurement mic is placed on a stand (Ideally a tripod) at a position of 450 angle and 0.5m away from the exhaust. Assume SL guys will stick to known ISO standards of measuring. VVTi
Here is some interesting news, a known party was arrested on Saturday night near LP for running a loud exhaust. Kept in the Colpity copshop over night, released, car was impounded pending courts. All those Beat barrel boys better line up at the exhaust shops and say good bye to your barrels, lest you want to spend some quality time as a state guest and be slapped with a fine or God knows what else. Good for you; I get 2 "Paan" van and 4 School vans 5AM till 7AM in the morning. Damn I hate those funny noises. School vans; those guys honking like nothing till the kids comes to the road. One guy keeps honking and go till the end of the road just like waking people up and comes back again with continues honking to pick up the kids. PS> Those school vans has different kind of noises; those are to identify which van came in first.
