Which Autogear Mechanic You Recommend...?

chan5

Question

feedback needed friends..

Car is toyota CARINA CT - 190.

With 2C engine and 4speed automatic gearbox.

Has a delay on engaging to D On cold starts, (will say about 15 seconds). And it engage with a knock then.car jumps forward when accelerate.

In running temperature also it takes about 3 seconds to engage.

Has Replaced the recommended oil + cleaned the filter and helped for few weeks. Issue reappeared .

So decided to go for gearbox repair..

By reading the forum got

3 mechanics.discussed with them and they've different ups and downs.

Need help for select the suitable one.

1 - R*sanjana motors pannipitiya-quoted 30 k with toyota oil + labour + repair kit.needed 2 days.

2 - Ni*wala motors ambuldeniya -28k with toyota oil+repair kit+labour.he has stocked parts and need only 24 hours to repair.he sounds competent.

3- IND*KA - Kolonawa - needed 5-4 days since he need to replace every piece and bit which has ware , uses some caltex oil(? ).In his language it's full overhaul rather than just repair the issue. 28k .

Plus all give 3-6 months warranty on repair.

Which place is best to go with your experiences.?

Side note - replacing a used box is excluded from the equation :)

Did Indika have a look at your car? He had a habit of giving worst case scenarios.

But he repaired my cvt and 4speed. They work like new

didn't inspect , just over the phone,

since he talked about full overall thing, i asked about what could be the worst, according to him, the worst would be less than 30k.

He mentioned about you as well :)()

and autolanka members who came for repairs.

My issue is the fellow need 5-6 days . .

While other 2 people sort out it within day or 2..

from 5-6 days he may can but other i don't know how it do with in 2 days. Nawala motors do it with in 24 hours. magic ha..

it's my mama's car, so i don't want a cheap quick job it's not upto standard.

And as far as i know this box is simply repairable, not such "might" .

And all above centers are specialised on autoboxes.

So they can handle a matter OF dismantle - place the repair kit with rubber seals +oil rings + cleaning internal stuffs+ and re assemble the thing into the car back within a day or 2.

You have ANY input? Recommendation or idea what to do then ?

This guy. He did the GB on my jeep, very similar symptoms, wasn't engaging quickly, engaging with an aweful jerk, etc. I have no problems recommending him. Chinthaka or a name like that, IIRC.

Tho my job cost 40k :) Had to find parts, not like Toyotas :) Besides, he kept the place open later than normal so I could pick up the vehicle after work.

Wow i was going to buy a used autobox for my fb14 car.Do you think rebuilding is the best way to go??i'm amazed at this prices because lot of people said it would even reach 70k...

*-in my head this is guerrilla marketing!'-*

Indika is a Nissan nut. He services the 300zx as well.

I went for a rebuild on two cars and they worked fine. Problem with replacing is that you don't know what state the gearbox you're getting is in!

Yeah that's what worried me too..the garages i went recommended me to replace with a japan used one..they said that rebuilding would cost a lot because till you get it apart you don't know which things are damaged inside and end up paying a lot.i will go for a rebuild from above places.tanx

in my case , used autoBOX Also bounce around the same price tag.

(toyota:)). Since i've a terrible luck i always be on safe side .

So decided to repair it rather than gambling with some used box .

Call above garages and fix a upper margin before you open the thing if possible.

I always asked from them , what's the maximum cost if it's the worst.

In my case it's very different. There's no delay in engaging gears. But car stucks and hang on gears on the road.(car pauses) so i had to re-accelerate hard to get it engaged.I found used boxes around 18k-25k for my one.But yeah as you say i have this terrible luck too lol.I will definitely go to above places to check on rebuilding. So i know its all brand new inside.tanx.

Seems like you've got 2 recommendations! Nothing like first hand experiences to resolve issues. If I was you Cha5, I would go to the garage closest me.

yes ,

i've discussed with the both places

where KOMISIRIPALA and PERI Recommended.

And yes indeed,

selected the most accessible place to me :):) :) :) .

And felt that both offer the similar package with minor differences.

Thanks for sharing the information,

hoping to dismantle the box on this week itself.

Let you all know, how the things go on.

Who did you select? The rule of thumb I tend to use is I don't mind selecting the guy who quotes more time, because I'd rather plan for that and for the job to finish quicker than a guy to quote less time and I plan for that and it takes more.

But having said that the other guys might be faster, or the guy who wanted more time busier with other work.

selected the PERI'S recommended place because easy accessibility.

And arranged to put the car for dismantle in an evening.

Repairing process on next day.

And because i need to check the repair in cold start,(and mechanic too insisted) will be picking up on the following day.

So technically it's about 2 or more days.

As you guessed, kolonnawa guy is little busy with some cvt boxes too.

Not promoting but Chandana at Ambuldeniya know what he is doing for Japan Auto Boxes!

In our case all the "plates", o rings, valves were replaced (the problem is with the o rings) in just few hours and it took only 10hours and the box still going strong

update...

Put the car for dismantle on day before yesterday as planned.

They've finished the repair and re assemble on yesterday itself and i had a test drive too.

Gearbox was working fine ,

NO engaging delays and butter smooth ridding.

I wanted to check it on cold start so i skipped the pick up for today morning'

picked the car on today morning , run for about 60 kms and working fine.

Not any noticeable issues.

Think the issue is settled 100%.

Too early to predict the long term durability OF the repair.

But the garage gave 6 months warranty for it.

And about the place.

Quite friendly mechanic, seems he knows what he's doing.

Total repair cost 26k , which is below s quoted 28k tag.

Replaced all seals and rings , few bearings.valves and bla bla.included about 6 liters of toyota D2 Oil.

And ,car was dirty after some running in rain .and they've bothered to do a body wash and interior vaccume cleaning from a near by service station before the delivery of car ,(free of charge).

Which is not a thing to amaze but those type of things are rare in this field.

Anyway can recommend the person,

it's still too early to recommend long term durability , but for now. . It's working fine.

And thanks everybody for helping out about and your inputs.

Your feedback is very good to hear. I think I will put this garage on my short list as well as I live pretty close to Ambuldeniya

He's generally not too keen on taking on other jobs. Bit of an autobox specialist. Can manage, but prefers to concentrate on his area of expertise. We wanted to get him to check out some suspension issue too, since his work was good, but he was kinda reluctant. Said he could, but not all that willingly.

You know what, I'm ok with that :) I mean the man's clearly good at what he does, and there is no harm in sticking with you know and do it well! But such workmen who take pride in their work (illustrated by getting the car cleaned before the client arrived) are quite rare.
