Don't get out of the car in the emergency lane, because apparently said lane is not wide enough to risk opening the door without it being knocked out on one side, and without it hitting the barrier on the other side. So basically, make sure you have no reason to get in to the emergency lane.

I read somewhere that it is mandatory for all vehicles entering the highway to carry a warning triangle. I'm not sure to what extent this rule can be enforced. Some vehicles come with a warning triangle fitted to the bottom of the boot lid, but most don't. I guess they can be bought separately.

On tyres - What is generally considered good condition or good enough condition in Sri Lanka is adequate only for our ordinary roads. I learnt this the hard way when I was in the UK by using a tyre for too long after it barely managed to get through the MOT. I think the minimum tread depth recommended for passenger vehicles in most countries is 1.6mm. We also need to take the speed rating of tyres in to account, which is indicated by a letter on the tyre wall. I think anything above 'L' is rated safe for over 100KM/ph. Could anyone share more accurate info on tyre speed ratings?

Another item for the checklist - Wipers.

As SeanD says it is best to avoid a situation where you need to use the emergency lane / hard shoulder. However if it is necessary to get off the vehicle (for example In the unlikely event of a fire), we must immediately stand behind the safety of the steel barrier.

Don’t forget to check the blind spots when switching lanes people. Very important when changing lanes while moving fast.

Other things I’ve experienced on highway driving:

* Get an idea about the stopping distance involved if you had to come to a complete stop while doing say 120km/h. When you`ve been travelling at a high speed constantly, the mind tend to accept the speed and forget that you’ll ever need to stop.! Constant high speed is different to reaching a higher speed within a shorter time period, coz you tent to concentrate less after a while.

* IF you`ve got cruise control on, keep your foot on the break paddle. You don’t want to search for the paddle to break in a hurry (the habit of taking both feet off the pedals while on cruise has scared the shit out of me a few times when the moron in front decides to slow down all of a sudden). At the same time, cruise control can be a bitch when approaching a corner/bend, coz the car tend to go faster than it should. If you are not familiar with a particular bend break gently or turn of cruise control.

* It`s ok to chat with other people in the car, but no looking back (or constantly looking at the front passenger), no fooling around, no eating while driving etc… (you can’t take things casual and go slow on a highway, stick to the speed limit and concentrate on driving).

* Always anticipate hazards, if there`s a dog in front of you, break, but don’t try to avoid it if the speed is too much (unless you are Sebastian Leob maybe). A dead dog and a smashed front end is much better than the car doing a few summersaults along the highway. !

First experience on E01

It was great!

However,

For 80km I traveled, there were lot of (over 50) dogs on the road. (I think they will find new homes soon when they realize there are lots of vehicles traveling.)

I was unfortunate to witness one of first accident on E01, It was a van toppled just before (Galle side 1.5km) Horana exit. It seems like happened few min before I reach that point and there was considerable damage to van and two guys were near van. I haven’t seen any injured. There was just enough space on road to pass that point because van was blocking road. It seems like van hit the fence on middle of road and toppled.

Also I was behind a guy (I think entered from Galle) who drove Black Prius, and to the full distance of 80km I traveled, he was occupying right side lane, (not only for over take!). I felt sorry for the guy, who had rat brain, no use cursing to him. Just shown amount of education he had, although he drove big car!

Also there was one dead dog on road.

And some birds.

It took me 55min to cover 80km

There were only few vehicles on road. (I saw only about 60~70 for 80km I traveled, both directions)

After all it was great!

Free Rides For MR, PM

By Indika Sri Aravinda - The Sunday Leader

President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Prime Minister D.M Jayaratne will be able to travel for free along the southern expressway after it opens to the public from today.

When The Sunday Leader queried from the Road Development Authority (RDA) southern expressway project Director D.M Chandrasiri, he said that all VIPs including government ministers and parliamentarians must pay to use the expressway.

However he said the President and Prime Minister will be exempted. Meanwhile the Green Movement (Haritha Viyaparaya) claimed that there are environmental concerns over the expressway.

Coordinator of the Haritha Viyaparaya, Banduranga Kariyawasam said that stray and wild animals may attempt to cross the road and will get caught to speeding vehicles.

He said that there was a need to erect high fences around the highway to prevent animals from nearby villagers and thickets crossing.

However Chandrasiri insisted that there was no need to erect fences at this point.
