First and foremost you have to understand you are asking about a top of the range luxury car. So in that context some of your questions are silly (as in nobody in the right mind will ask them). I'll try to answer the rest.

1. The engine is reliable

2. Possibly timing chain but you will need to provide the exact engine code to be sure.

3. The cabin quality is of a very high quality and you should not hear rattles unless somebody has taken the interior apart and not put back together properly.

4. Mechanical parts are rare but available

5. Body parts are a bit rarer but available if you are prepared to look around (I've seen whole front cuts myself in the Delkanda area)

6. Fuel consumption, don't know, probably around 6

7. Resale value, hard to sell like any big car in SL, but values are stable

Compare with Honda Accord or Toyota Camry? This is a silly question. They are an entire class under the Cedric. You should compare with the Toyota Crown.

Ideally you should compare Camry or an Accord with a Cefiro not a crown. Cefiro, Camry Accord belong to the mid size category while Cedric is a Large/Full size Car. As far as i know Toyota Crown and Honda Legend fall in that category.

Thanks every one.. sorry for some of the so called silly questions.

but pls try to understand all of us are not experts in cars to know which class what car belongs to.

the very reason why some of us non experts browse these forums is to learn rather than the other way around.

this forum is doing a great job in giving the general public a place to field a question and get an unbiased answer.

I hope some one can respond to my question about what is the current market price for 2003 gloria Y34 56,000km done.

I had a Y33 Cedric GranTurismo, V6, 3.0, auto. Engine is chain driven VQ30DE... guess the later gen also had the same engine. Drinks juice as it is going out of style, made the Subaru feel like a Hybrid. Lucky to have got 5kmpls. But it pampers you all the way. Mine had leather electric seats, sun roof, buttons for everything. Engine is a work horse and will put in +500,000kms without any issues as long as it was taken care of. Mine had 225,000kms and still hummed like new. Takes about 8 litres of oil and costs close to 18k to service at A*W. Gear box is a known weak point as it is only a 4 speed and really struggles to cope with the fairly large torque curve of the VQ XX DE.. which is the same bloodline as the new GTR engines and the old 300Zxs. Fixing such a box will cost you dear.

Body parts are very hard to source and those who have know its rare and normally charges premium prices. Build quality is typical Japanese and ages well. But it all depends on who owned it prior.

Its a luxo barge and can cover lots of ground quickly and comfortable, but there is a price to pay.

Remember, as much as it is tempting to buy guzzlers due to prevailing gas prices, the honeymoon will not last.. already government budget for the fuel is over by 15Bn... :) So its a matter of time the new bride crosses her legs and stops the free for all.

If you are asking if the car advertised on AL is the going rate... well it all depends on what the car is worth to you and the current owner and come to a happy middle. Personally I Would not pay 2.5Mn for that. But then going by current rates, that's a lot of car for 2.5.

For cars like this, there's no fixed 'market price' like Axios and Allions. A lot depends on the condition of the car and how well it has been maintained. A well-loved Gloria may go in excess of 2.5 million while a car with a dubious history may go for even 1.5

You need to analyze the seller more than anything else, when you buy a Gloria (or a BM or Benz or Phaeton or Fuga or pretty much any luxury car).

Bit of OT but wanted to add a few lines. In fact there is nothing wrong with asking silly questions. You may have number of questions coming to your head in a flash on a subject and the correct approach is to just raise them regardless of them being silly or otherwise. Some of the questions may sound outright silly but if you try to filter them in your head that would invariably block the thought process and you may miss out on the important ones too. I'm not a psychologist but if you ask one you would get the same answer.

May have been a harsh calling some of your questions silly, but Hiran all I alluded to was to use a bit of common sense, in formulating your thought process. For example a few things are obvious.

1. The Cedric / Gloria is a BIG car, and bigger than some of the models you have compared to. It also has more luxurious interior which can be noticed at a glance

2. The Cedric/ Gloria has a big engine. Some Cedrics did come with Diesel engines out of the factory, but you can expect the fuel economy to be low. That will not be one of the reasons you will buy a big car.

2. Why does anybody buy a big car? because they are comfortable and superbly equipped. So asking about AC capacity and comfort....... Well unless you consider the Japanese engineers who built these cars complete imbeciles, is not a rational question to ask.

Hence what I've suggested is to apply common sense, which usually supplies answers to quite a few questions, and then ask the others, because quite frankly we are all adults here, and we don't want to lecture you like a child (and neither will you like that).

Also while its useful to ask people questions to get a feel for a car in a Sri Lankan context, an internet search is very useful in learning about the model and common issues. It always pays to do the research, and asking a question on Autolanka is only part of the equation.

Dear DON ,

As is always its a matter of opinion.... getting back to the question about AC is because its a big car and probably JDM and may or maynot be intended to use in a hot and humid climate?

I used to work in qatar for some time and one thing I noticed was radiator and AC compressor size differs with same item is same model back home.

they probably are built for 50c 100% humidity and to hit 140 km on hight way during summer.

I refer to the response about the A/T box by VVTi ...... as been a weak spot to handle higher torqure. I think this A/T box is also built by japanies engineers who are not imbeciles :speechless-smiley-006::speechless-smiley-006: .

fuel consumption is a concern wheather the car is big , small, luxuary , owner is filthy rich or not. therefore the question.Knowing is better than " never mind".

You have assumed I have not researched internet.... I have done this more than 1/2 a day but could,nt find exact answers. All the answers are pertinent to US and Russia.

In any case all you guys have been very helpfull.... but my question about fuel consumption is still unanswered.

( I know it depends on how you drive , where you drive , when you drive.... etc ... etc... lets assume average working day goint to work down galle road from Ratmalana to Kollupitiya taking marine drive ...) :speechless-smiley-004:

In terms of AC, well a lot of JDM cars suffer from the condensors not being big enough. Usually the compressors don't need to change because increasing that size puts further load on the engine, but the compressed air needs to be cooled as much as possible before it gets to the evaporator. In models with a specific issue (I've never heard about this with the Cedric because its slightly over engineered) you either replace the condenser with an export model condenser (which is the case for European cars) or a locally made condenser which is bigger than the original.

In terms of AT, I know VVTi's cars seemed to rev a bit higher than normal and not accelorate as well, a problem we never got to the bottom of. What he said was it is considered to be a weak point. The problem here is torque from the 3L engine, and on a petrol engine the torque curve comes at the mid rpm range. Personally since these cars are rarely driven aggressively I do not consider this to be a problem that manifests itself regularly. They are luxury barges after all mostly driven by chauffers. The only thing to take from his comment is you should check it out carefully for faults before you buy it as repair or replacement maybe expensive.

As for fuel consumption 5 or 6 is probably fair for a 3L Auto heavy barge. Actually VVTi has answered this question.

thanks guys ..... I think now I can go see the seller.

btw pls tell me a way to test the AT while test driving , if you know of a rule of thumb way. would be of great help.

thanks again.

You should drive on a flat and hopefully clear road and take the car to about 60, 70 kmp. You should see the RPM ise and hower just over 2000 and experience smooth gear changes (remember it might not be instant as luxury cars normally trend to drag the change a little to make it smoother) and the rpm should not rise above 2500 or so I think. Do not engage kick down or anything else. Just accelorate gradually and keep the accelorator at a steady level (as in don't race and then brake). This way the car shifts up by itself and you are looking for smooth shifts up.

After this is confirmed, you can check the kick down to see if the kick down triggers a shift down.

Once shifts up are confirm gently bring the car to a stop. There should be no vibrations or jittering as the car comes to a complete stop.
