Hi All,

I am thinking to buy either toyota premio or honda grace hybrid.

I would like to know in terms of

what will be the best for me in 3 years time if i purchase either of them today.

things to consider

fuel

second hand value

spare parts cost

maintaince cost

Premio is a compact sedan which is lot roomier than subcompact Grace which is based on Honda city. I would choose Premio hands down if money permits and not concerned on fuel consumption.

  1. Fuel: Grace will do better on fuel as its a hybrid but that doesn't mean the Premio is very thirsty on fuel

Second hand market: Premio seems to be holding its value very well even after plenty of hybrids have come down. For some reason hybrids aren't holding their value, maybe this is because they keep getting updated.

Since the Premio is bit older than the Grace it'll be easier to find parts for Premio and they will probably be cheaper too

I cant comment on the maintenance as I haven't owned both of these but I do know people who had a Premio and they didn't complain about it

is this a result of just the fact hybrids are brought unreg and there is usually an initial depreciation even for petrol cars.

I've noticed that in classifieds used hybrids are not that much cheaper than unregistered counterparts of same vintage. I'm of course refering to 2012/13 ish hybrids (the common ones Aqua, Fit ) and not the prius/insights/civic hybrids from 2008 etc.

Grace has surprisingly good interior space due to longer wheelbase .Its rear leg space exceeds 5 series and according to Honda it comes closer to Accord hybrid .. Edited by H.C

Say what ? (I guess it is a Grace that you are bringing down)

The wheel base of the Grace is the same as the wheel base of a Axio (2600mm). So it does not have a longer wheelbase than the Premio or an Accord (in fact it has a wheelbase the size of any subcompact car....size based taxation reasons).

If you look at the measured drawings you will see that the seats are narrower than the Accord and the Premio. To be honest the tapering roofline in the back made me feel cramped (and i am not that tall) and it really didn't feel any much more different than in a Fit and I felt the Fit to be a bit more airy (and the Fit measures a bit shorter than the Grace).

Granted the legs did have better placement than the Axio because the rear seats seem to be mounted higher and slanted more than the Toyota (but then again it has always been a Toyota thing to have seats really low to the floor). I have never been in the back seat of a Premio but I have in an Allion and I did not feel any leg room closer to that of an Allion (also with a huge baby seat in the back which has a pretty far reaching pedestal and floor mount; I still could slide the front seat a decent way back in the Allion). So transitively it is a bit of a stretch, even from Honda, to say it has rear leg room closer to an Accord as the Accord is more closer to the Camry in size. (Then again Honda does stretch its stories and they did claim the Hybrid Vezel will perform equal to one a Honda 2.0L engine and we know how that went...)

And back on to the topic..I too vote for the Premio if you can spring the money for it...I think an ICE car would be less of a burden to maintain in the long run as opposed to a Hybrid where things that can go wrong would need some extra special attention (and perhaps deeper pockets). Also, I think the Premio would be a more comfortable car. However, if you do go for a Premio be sensible about how much you spend for it (plenty of car sales people sell them at a premium price just because there are some utterly useless rice additions on it. Some of them are even Chinese crap they install over here...and apparently some do the "G Superior" package add-on over here...okay so the latter was just hear-say, but knowing our guys its not too far-fetched :D).

Options and Gizmos wise i would think the Grace ranks higher.

For some reason the Premio seems to be lagging in that area when compared to Allion even.

Uhh..not really...it is just that most of the Premios that come to SL are the low grade ones. If you take the ACTUAL G Superior or even G which comes in only 2.0L form it gets spec'd out to have as much stuff as a Mark X (I know because ones I went to a dealership and spec'd one out and the sales girl very sweetly said it would be cheaper for me to buy a Mark X). (The G Superior that you get here is just a dealer package that has minor add-ons put on to a high grade 1.5L). Also, the T260 platform is quite old so it lacks a lot of the safety features, etc.. of most cars that were launched over the last year or two.

@iRage, I just trapped in to Grace after going through some articles and reviews. Like you said Honda has streched it too much to compare it to Accord. But there is obvious improvement in every aspect to previous gen city and for me its better than current civic. This is the article Im reffering to; http://world.honda.com/news/2014/4141201All-New-Grace-Hybrid-Sedan/

The previous gen City sucked. So did the one before that :) but yes...Grace's refinement in materials etc is a lot better than compared to something like a Axio or Belta (which are pretty much same sized) but it really isn't that much spacious than the others. Like i said...the Fit feels a lot more airy compared to the Grace and that is a smaller car...so it ends up being about shapes and light flow, etc at the end.
