Low budget car

Hi all,

I am planning to buy my first car.

My budget is below 1 Million.

I would prefer a car with fuel consumption of not less than 10 kmpl (City).
Petrol or Diesel (Need to know pros and cons)
Should be a comfortable and less noisy car
Parts availability matters
Nice looking car

In addition I need more details about Daewoo and Opel cars.

Mitsubishi Lancer CB1, CB2

Proton Wira

Ford Laser

But they will not give much than 10kmpl in the city. (You can go Maruti 800 if you have no problem with indian cars)

Since this is your first car, better to go for petrol.

buy a reasonably cheap car , Get a good insurance policy ,

Just a thought: what about a mint DX wagon for much less than your budget...keep the remainder for possible repairs.

Another option would be an early 90's Daihatsu Charade.

Carina AT170 is a good comfy car but it's a bit above your bugdet.

Hi SANCAR. Thank you very much. Really appreciate. I have no problem with Indian cars, but the size of the Maruti is too small. I would love to drive a sedan or a coupe instead of a hatchback.

Thanks a lot. Mazda BG5P is a nice looking car and fits with my requirement. Only thing is to find a well maintained car.

What is your opinion on Carina AT170 ?

What about a early 90's CIVIC? Is it within my range?

In addition, I need to know about Daewoo Ceilo which seems very comfortable, but I have no idea about the actual performance and the parts availability. And, whether it is troublesome in the way of frequent repairs.

If you can get a good AT 170 for less than a mill, it would be good but the question is can you?

Early 90s civics are mostly EG8s. 1. They are grossly overpriced 2. they are molested by horny 90s teens.

Daewoo Cielo - comfortable - yes. everything else - no.

well around 11ish.. I saw one for 1,060,000 advertised on the 'quick' site but there are some listed for as high as around 1.5 ...if you can find a decent specimen for around your budget you'd be lucky. Just keep that option in mind ... you never know sometimes you might come across someone in an urgent need to sell.

Im using opel corsa b (1995) for more than 4 years, did 47,000Km +

no parts issue in colombo, can bring down any body parts if necessary. sathosa motors still in operation(only once i went there ) but recommend to have a good opel mech for ur mechanical repair work.

in this 4 years
- replaced all sensors for less than Rs.10,000/- (ebay )
- T belt change with water pump Rs.13500/-
- repaired radiator 3500/-
- shock absorbers repaired Rs.9500/ (new will cost 32,000/- for all)
- A/C fully repaired Rs.35,000/- (it was fitted in SL)
- plugs replaced once Rs.4500/-
- brake serviced two times Rs.9500 each (front brake pads only change once)
- did paint job once
- doing service on time with multi grade oils (my engine still strong with same performance)

What about Mazda Astna? How is the fuel consumption.

I saw a BMW E34 around 1 M. Isn't it value for money? How is the fuel, spare parts?

I am not that experienced in repairs and haven't had a life with a car.

I know that these machines are unpredictable. So, I am ready to accept the challenge. But again I should look for less troubling car to be my first ever car.

Machan... couple of months back, I went to Nilwala Motors (a specialist garage for gearboxes) to get the gear oil changed for one of my cars. Guess what I saw,,,

A KY-number Premio with total gearbox failure

2 KX- and KN- number axios with total gearbox failure

and what do u hear about them Toyotas? reliable? predictable?

Of course there were peugeots and some older cars but the whole point is any car can be unpredictable i not maintained properly.

You think them being CVT gearboxes had anything to do with them failing prematurely?

There is a belief that CVT gearboxes can't withstand abuse like conventional autos. I always wondered if its true.

Yes. I agree. Maintenance is everything. Since I am buying a second hand car, I am very concerned about the way it's been maintained. Then only I can continue with a proper maintenance plan. But again, my budget is not that much to buy a perfectly maintained car. Anyways I am looking for value for money.

Thanks to you guys, I got some valuable information about the car I should look for. I still have my options open. At the moment Mazda 323 is on top.

I have previously asked about an E34 around 1 Million. What is your opinion? Is it a good car? It is Looking good and decent.

It looks like it doesn't it? As you said they may not be for the abusive driving conditions here. Didn't Toyota fit in a conventional Auto box for the B/New Corolla 141's and Yaris's that were sent here as opposed to CVT's on Axios and Beltas?

All CVTs are JDM imports it seems at least for Toyota. But in India agents do offer CVTs such as new Nissan Micra/March, Honda Jazz etc. Maybe newer CVTs are bit reliable given they have even worse conditions than us?

Actually Ford Laser is a very good choice. It's a Mazda Familia/323 underneath and you will get it for a slightly lower price than a Familia/323
