POOR FUEL EFFICIENCY AE110

Hello Experts

I own Toyota AE 110, Auto Petrol car which used to do over 10km/lt in city and 14km/lt for long running It has done170000km by now. Since 3 months ago I was experiencing gear transmission delay and poor fuel efficiency and did ATF change at Auto Miraj (maharagama). Thereafter the transmission become bit smooth but not up to the standard level and couldn’t see any fuel consumption improvement either ( 8km/lt).

Also I was noticing unusual engine noise and needed extra effort to pick up the vehicle when speeding up.

One month back I showed the car to a mechanic and he suggested to do an engine tune-up. So I did an engine tune up at Auto Miraj( Rathmalana) , replacing plugs & Petrol filter. Cost was around 16k.After the tune up the engine become more smother and gear shifting becomes almost 90% ok. They guaranteed minimum of 14km/lt for long running.

There after I’ve done more than 500km , but  I’m unable to see significant fuel efficiency improvement still. Car does 8km/lt in city limits and just 8.5km /lt in outstation.

I went back to AM and let them to inspect again. They removed plugs and showed me that plugs have turned to fully white and it is a very good sign for doing well enough fuel in the car.

After a test run the mechanic said he is noticing gear transmission delay from 2nd to 3^rd and that might be the cause for the issue and no issue with plugs or injectors and try to do ATF change again.

My concern is I have changed the ATF 3 months back (with genuine Toyota oil) and can it still be a problem of gear oil? What I should do to improve the fuel efficiency.

@ Cdj- I  filled up  the  tank( full) and after ran abt 300km , filled up again and calculated the number of Km's per one litre.

Can you just tell us how dd you measure fuel efficiency ?? So that we could come up with solutions right away ??

Flush the trans with a mechiene. you may be still having a lot of burnt old ATF in the system. a considerable amount is left inside the gearbox/torque converter .

Did you change the air filter?

Thanks Twin, When changing ATF( 3months back)  I inquired form AM whether they do it by mchine. But they recommond to do it manual process only.Checked the air filter by themsleves &  it is in good condition still.

Proper fuel mixture and hence the efficiency cannot be decided by simply taking a look at the plugs although that serves the purpose to some extent. For a real assessment you need to do an emission test.

 However when you say delay in engaging the gears does that mean the change occurs at a higher RPM than before or does it take a couple of seconds to engage the gear? I am sure AM must have used their fluid exchanger while changing ATF 3 months back. If so I don't see a reason to do it again in the same manner. But the proper way to do it IMO is to remove the fluid sump, clean the magnets, check/replace ATF filter and then flush out the remaining ATF with or without an exchanger. You don't have to do it on each time you change ATF but every other instance would do. This kind of clean up could give you a few clues on the tranny's condition based on the residue in the sump/magnets and  the filter. 

What you need IMO is a proper diagnosis with a scan to decide on the MAP sensor.

I also had a similar issue with a 1998 model Corolla 110, I used between 2009/2011 period.

It also had kind of dragging effect when changing gears. that was giving me a mileage of only 6kmpl which is not the typical figure of this model.

I got in touch with a mechanic who is good@ automatic repairs.

He test drove the car and suggested the valve body (not sure the correct technical word) has to be replaced. Got the work done by him, total cost was something closer to 25k at that time.

The issue got resolved, the normal performance of the 110 was back afterwards.

My car deosnt have RPM metre and hard to diagnose extrct  level of problem occurs.

Just after the ATF change I engaged with a scan too at the same place. It didint indicte any error and they said engine is in good condition.

AM pple did remove the sump and cleaned with kerosene , but all in  manual process.

@Kalvin If they used the manual process did they get all ATF out? You need around 7-8 Ltrs of ATF to replace if you use the manual method or couple more if you use the exchanger. 

Proceed with R Fernando's suggestion above and if you get the issue resolved please update this thread with your experience and the contact of the person for the benefit of other forum users. Or better still if you can update on 

 thread as well.

This could be due to some issue or worn out parts in ur tranny.. Better to get it checked with some auto gear box repair mechanic..
