Hi guys

this is my first time usen this could anyone please help me out I have a ford mondeo 2002 1.8 petrol and car will drive fine for about twenty mins and then the revs won't go past 4000revs and if I leave it for about 40 mins the car will drive grand for twenty and then it's starts acting up again has anyone any idea what problem is .. Could it be the crankshaft sensor as I had a Nissan Almera and all the symptoms were the same as the mondeo and the problem was just a crankshaft sensor.. Much appreciated thanks

Hi Aaronddg, welcome to the forum! This does sound like the car going into limp mode because the ECU detected an issue. Does the "check engine" light come up on the dashboard when this happens?

Since it happens after a certain amount of time, it could be that one of your ignition coils are failing or even a sensor failing after it gets warmed up. Yes it could be the Crankshaft Position Sensor amongst a lot of other things. The best way to identify is by doing a diagnostic scan and look for any error codes that may have been raised and stored in the ECU error log.

The nice thing about Fords is you don't need a scanner to identify most (not all) errors thrown by the ECU.

1. Press and hold the tripmeter reset button (make sure AC is off)

2. Switch the ignition to on, while holding it

3. When tESt is displayed on the odometer, let go of the tripmeter reset button

4. Keep pressing the tripmeter reset button till you get to DTC

5. Note down the DTC and do a google search to find out whats wrong

Note that the DTC wont point you to the exact problem. You will see something like 'invalid data for RPM'. You can try a bit of digging in talkford.com or focusfanatics.com to get a bit better luck on sorting the issue.

Hi thanks for replying crosswind I done that and the fault code came up only one and i googled it and it said low battery voltage car starts fine. It goes grand for about 15 20 minuets and the stalls at 4000revs and then leave for about 45 mins it's fine then again same ting. If ot was the coil leads would the car not start shaken and engine misfire ? Is there anyway to test the cam and crank sensors or has anyone else had the same problem and what was the cause ? Thanks

Had the same problem in Mondeo 2004 model with 2L engine. Scanner gave error codes relating to  Air flow sensor and Throttle position sensor. Issue got resolved once i replaced the 2 sensors.

I got the sensors through ebay. Till they arrive i used to erase the error code once it occurs and restart the car, so did not had to wait 40 or so minutes on the road. :) Once the code is erased and car is restarted, its out of limp mode so can drive normally.

JayZ thanks very much for your comment I hope this will resolve the issue any idea where those two are located In the engine ?

Note that although JayZ's issue was due to the mentioned sensors, it might not be the same sensors on your Mondeo. So better get a proper diagnostic scan done before blindly replacing sensors.

Yes, as Davy said, get your car checked with a proper scanner. I got error codes relating to above sensors hence i changed them.

I got a small scanner off AliExp. it was 20 odd dollars but really worth the price. With that you will be able to view the error codes with description and erase them temporarily. Below is a similar link for a reader. Cannot find the exact model i use as it was an older model now.
