D21 in 1984? I assume you mean a Datsun Pickup (720) with a D21 body. Firstly I would tell you to check on the registration certificate to be sure of the engine and chassis numbers are correct.

The D21 was not in production in 1984. It's a common practice in Sri Lanka to Body swap the Older Datsun 720 with the D21 body (as Gummy mentioned) sometimes it might even be simply a D21 running around with the CR from Datsun 720 that probably rusted away peacefully.  Check the VIN numbers engine numbers etc. If I'm not mistaken the 720 has the SD Series engine and the D21 has the TD Series engines.

Reliable? well these are almost 40 years old so anything from engine, transmission to electricals could go wrong but on the other hand they are very simple to repair. Be more vigilant on the legal status of the vehicle and corrosion - these are vehicles that were routinely abused. On the plus side the engines are crude but basic engines and can be fixed by almost anyone. Do keep a sizeable budget aside for some repairs. Also most of the 720's are registered as Heavy Vehicles so you need a heavy vehicle license to drive them. (Your number plate would probably start with 28- or 40-)

Considering the age of the vehicle...which ever is in better condition

Old Automatic transmissions are slow and floggy and not very desirable so the manual will have more "demand". The manual I beleive will be better at getting the most out of the vehicle (power and economy wise). Automatic will be easier to drive but not the most optimal performer.

So your..depends on what you plan to use the vehicle for and depends on which vehicle is in better condition.
