Honda Civic Hybrid FD3 MXST

That is the ignition switch....it does the same thing that the push buttons do in Toyotas, Hondas, etc...

Honda offered it on cars that came with the Honda Smart key...

It seems like the outer part of the ignition switch in your car is broken and someone joined it with a normal key head so it can be turned ? Inside there might be a key shaft as well. Can you take that key head like part out now ? Does the switch actually work ? Does the car start up even without the key-fob (second photo).

The proper way to fix it would be to replace the entire unit. This will require re-programming the entire smart key system. This will also be very expensive.

You can:

1. See if you can just fix a new outer piece from a second hand unit. If you can, all you need to do is find a second hand unit at Panchi/Delkanda/etc...its fine if the unit is broken as long as the outer cover part is still there.

2. Go to a car electronics accessory shop that does "Push button conversions". See if they have a solution to fix the outer part without having to get rid of your existing key-fobs, locks, etc... Usually these conversions are done with cheap Chinese systems and the work is done by maka baases. So this would not be a very good solution. They will try to sell you a new push button system instead of fixing or replacing the existing part. In which case you might have to walk around with two key fobs.

3. If the key works (goes in to ACC mode, Power mode, starts the car, car gets locked, etc..) as it is...just leave it. Forget there is anything wrong and use the car. It is not something that you will see all the time so it is easy to just overlook. As you forget and use it...look for a broken/used parts at the usual body shops. If you find a used part fix it. If not...just live life. Life is too short and there are more important things to worry about than the broken cover of an ignition switch :)

To add to what iRage has mentioned - the switch is the same as in the Honda Fit GP1 - so you will probably not have too much trouble sourcing this as the GP1 is a very common car in SL and many parts vendors will have it.

@Dee Jay might have some input as he owns the same model.

This could be true sometimes and sometimes not.. Because even though we think stuff are similar between the IMA Honda's the FD3 is a bit unique than the rest.. However, you would be able to source your part from a used Honda parts importer. The push start is a bit rare for the FD3 since it came as standard for the JDM MXST grade and optional for the MX grade so it might be a bit costly..

At least visually the knob that OP is looking for is identical to the GP1 - unless there's a difference in the size (highly unlikely) a knob taken off a GP1 would fit wouldn't it?

Yeah....I believe it would be the same as these are general/common parts. But what DeeJay says is also true. Sometimes the part looks the same from outside but there might be a small difference because of some accessory or a market difference.

Since visually, the steering multifunction buttons look the same I purchased a multifunction button set from a GP1 to replace to find out that the part isn't compatible.. the wiring is different.. So likewise it would be a 50%-50% chance of being identical.

However, did some searching for the exact part with the part number and its a common part 35104-SNB-J01.

@Suresh Gamage You can check with the agents with the above part number, they could have it or tec motors. This is a common part and yes its the same in Civic/ Fit/ Insight/ CRV/ Accord etc. so 2nd hand part shops would also have it..
