Good Auio Gear/home Theatre Stuff In Sl?

Recommended Posts

Guys,

I'm debating whether to bring my home theatre gear down from aussie.. but before I do, i thought I'd check the local stuff available. I've got reasonably high end gear. Are there specialist home theatre/audiophile shops around Colombo? I'm also after a home theatre projector - different to the business/multimedia ones. email me offline if it's easier (and by the rules) - [email protected].

Thanks

there was a joint which sold Altec Lansing stuff here but if your looking at Harmonn Kardon , B&O or é like then ur better off bringing it down

Nakamichi made a brief appearance on é market....but if unless u want a Sony HTS u best bring yours cuz é agents for most of é other makes are absolutely rubbish! :(

techno gizmos here r expensive n a tad out dated - your better off bringing it all down i figure....

i think thats é place which is now@jaic or so someone said....

not a big market here for premium HTS's as most ppl will settle for an avarage Wedge,Yamaha system instead cuz premium brand penetration is low...

Cool.. I think best to bring it down from the looks of things.. its all about 3 years old, so duty shouldn't be an issue (I hope). :-)

I think E*SI computers on Marine Drive who handle EPSON products have the agency for Nakamichi products.

Be prepared to spend US$2-5000 on a decent system since the taxes are quite high on such products.

Debug is the agent for Nakamichi and in my experience they're very good...

MSPORT5 if you're looking for nothing but audio you should try their sound space 8 or 8.5... highly recommended...

aney bung i'm not advertising - came across é link while browsing n posted it

ah careful - dont buy from Abans - their stuff is really bad quality - breaks down - bad aftersales - a total nightmare - steer clear of them at all costs!!!!

you cant say that Devinda. Its all case by case. There were Karoke and amps for 5000

i dunno bro - i've had a mess of an experience with them - but after lots of time wasted i managed to get a replacment until 8 months after it broke!

many others i know have complained abt warrenty issues , serviing problems etc

although they have good brands like JVC they dont back it up with thier service - its jus too messy :(

I think it all just depends on who you deal with at the time. We met a sales guy at Abans a few years ago and have dealt with him since. he also organises any service calls on our behalf, but having said that, it shouldn't have to be "luck of the draw" as such!!

Abans dont really sell any of the brands I'm after, so it's cool. I'm visiting the guys down tickell rd next week (friend of a friend), I've been there before but it was with someone else and I can't really remember what he had!! I'm basically after Marantz, B&W (or Kef). Projectors, it's probably the Epson TW (home theatre) series, which I don't think they sell in SL at all it seems... doh

Thanks for all the replies guys ;)

Hi Msports,

I had the same dilemma a few years back when I came down, And I personally think not everything available in the country have been covered in this post,

I think very few people can argue with the quality of YAMAHA when it comes to home thetre amplifiers, and for years and year theirs are considered amongst the best, and I am happy to say the Yamaha music centre over in SL carries some of their product range, and the prices are not too bad, though I must say a bit more expensive than probably buying them in Australia or in my case the UK.

For speakers, I haven't seen brands like KEF which is very famous in the home theatre scene available over in SL but certainly JBL (JBL is owned by Harmon Kardon I think), Bose Acoustimas B&W are all there but sometimes you need to go to specialist audio suppliers like complany's who rent audio equipment or provide professional audio equipment to buy the good quality stuff and cables, so you wont find them in the duty free or anything, but you might able to get something BOSE from siedles if you give their duty free a call, tell them u want a particular model and they might be willing to get it down and make it available for you.

As for the customs man, put the most expensive stuff in your luggage, and you carry it through and the customs people are quite lenient on things brought down for personal use. I know this because I carried my Yamaha amp and speakers through customs without any queries, they just asked me if it was for personal use and how long I was abrode. But remember its not a good idea to push it. And my speakers were quite small by the way, they were just monitors.

The only other thing i must mention is there is a slight issue of dust in SL, and unless you keep overseas bought electronics in an AC environment they tend to develop little issues, especially if they don't get used much. Cos those items are not tropicalised, and someties the operating temperature ranges are a bit different, so take that into consideration when you are bringing expensive equipment in, because there is no manufacturer warranty to cover those items, But if you have items for which there are local agents they are more easily repairable,

The Don

Ya I know the place, Suresh (can't remember the surname) he's now based @ Jaic Towers.

Would advise to bring it as there stuff here are absurdly prices, limited stuff......

Bringing it down would need to get a guy fixed form customs- he nearly charged me 80,000 K as tax for my speakers ( Mission Pair form UK) and a 60,000 for a dennon receiver.... so get a guy organized and make sure to pack it as it's been used over there.

Good luck

I think you were a bit unlucky mazdaspeed, personally I do think you should leave the items you cannot get into a suite case behind, and nicely fit whatever you do have into the duty free allotment you get when you are abrode, and then vehemently claim they were used by you for a while and thus they are worth much less than what they would have been worth brand new.

I am supprised at the rates you were quoted since the tax sounds nearly the cost of those items and mind you u would have paid VAT in the UK too. I didn't bother to declare my receiver ;)

Yeah.. i brought down all my gear in 2003 too and didn't pay any duty.. but it was packed "2nd hand" :-) it's a gamble though.. we actually brought our two pet dogs in 2003 as well and they tried to charge us 20,000 each as duty.. why? they said they were purebred.. but the vet cert in front of them said they were cross breeds.. so then they said 10,000 for both..
