Honda civic eg8. All of the appeal (and power if you get a vtec) with economy and it will hold it's value really well.

hi nuwan, welcome to AL, good to have you on board......

if your budget is around 1.1 million, there are several different choices you have, so dont limit yourself to corollas.......

FB14's can be found around that price quite easily, doctor sunnys are around 800,000...

as Kim said, a good choice might be the Toyota Ceres/marino..... this is a nice car because you get the simple mechanicals of the corollas in a much nicer looking body.

also, you should be able to pick up Nissan Pulsars and Mitsubishi Lancer Ck's at that price as well.

The Autolanka Classifieds is a good place to start your search...

A couple of FB14's

http://www.autolanka.com/ad.asp?ID=4011

A Pulsar

http://www.autolanka.com/ad.asp?ID=4220

A Mitsubishi Lancer CK

http://www.autolanka.com/ad.asp?ID=4163

A Ceres and a Marino

http://www.autolanka.com/ad.asp?ID=4127

http://www.autolanka.com/ad.asp?ID=4204

you should be able to get all of these within your budget with a little negotiating...... and keep in mind that some of them might need a bit of repairs here and there to get them in good shape.

good luck with the hunt!

im not. well not much anyway :D

thing is, i think values of civics are artificially high compared to other cars of the period, some cars like the Marinos honestly offer a better VFM package than a civic would in the current situ... and since this guy is lookin for Value as a priority....

true in certain instances.. I totally agree that when there is an endless list of accessories the owners may try to use them to over shadow the overall mechanical soundness (or lack of it) of the car. but there are a few bargains out there as well. cos a civic does have good build quality (and no, I am NOT claiming that it is better than Toyota's and Nissan's etc... :) )

anyways, hope you find a decent ride which will give you joy carnuwan.

Yeah totally agree.... I think Honda owes Universal studuios for using the Civics in Fast and the furious. I think thats one reason that honda's sorta became the root for most new buyers who want a 'modified' car...snap on a spoiler, a front lip and a muffler, and presto! Thus the increase in value... But i felt this trend has gone down a bit....what do you guys think?

you'd still get the occasional new comer who wants to get his hands on a honda just to 'modify' it.... I guess people want what people want.... :D

Dilesh, I also think the high revving engines of Hondas make them sound sportier, and help them achieve higher bhp levels from smaller displacement engines, which is why they have proven to be so attractive to that particular segment of the market you mentioned.

Also because of that popularity its easier to so called "modify" these cars as there are loads of bolt on parts available.

But in a purely logical sense, its hard to justify paying a lot more for a civic vs a comparable vehicle of another brand. But sadly the car market does not seem to be driven by logic. In 2003 which is the last time I bought a vehicle the FB14 was going at round 700 000 - 800 000 and the Corolla AE110 at 900 000 - 1 million but now the FB14's are going at 1.1 Million + while the Corollas are going at 1.4 Million+, and you might notice the gap between the 2 cars have widened. Having driven both cars, I do not think there is a lot between them, but obviously the market thinks otherwise :)

The Ceres Marino is thus a very good recommendation, as you get sportier suspension, on a nicer looking body, while getting a Corolla engine and running gear. Sounds like a very good compromise. But having said that all the cars mentioned have their merits, and my suggestion is to actually drive these cars, inspect them properly, and if you find a good example at a good price from any of those recommendations, and you yourself like it, then buy it :)

The trend going down is due to the unwelcome attention from the law (Or whatever masquerades as such in SL)

The occasional new comer is down to people not knowing about the unwelcome attention from the law that such a thing brings.

I think your first choice is grade. I think you r in a good mind. Try to find AE100 model that manufactured in 1995 and SE Limited (Saloon) model with white light. It’s a grade car. But remember it’s a family car. Not a sporty car. If u r finding a sporty car try AE-100 ceres/ marino also grade. Tercel, Corsa model also good. May be u can find Tercel, Corsa English numbers for 1.1m

I had a company provided corolla wagon for 3 years. Was mainly working outstaion during that time so I would have cloked a good 65K + in that car. Gotta tell you mate, it's may not be anything fancy, but it was a really realible and hardy vehicle. The demand for the wagon of that model is slightly less than the saloon, hence the price.

With regard to the eg8, it all depends on the engine and set up. if it's a dual carb it could do any where from 7 to 11. I had an eg8 (single carb non vtec) and she did 11-12 kmpl.

yes your father (Old man) is in correct position.

There are few models u can find. L-touring, G-Touring, L-Extra etc. all are AE100 wagon models. (Elephant back) most models with 5AFE EFI Engine. Try to find Manual dear model its good in fuel than Automatic gear models. Maybe you can find English numbered on with 1.1m price range.

Good hunting…..

yes they are built well, and IMO more interesting to drive than a same segment Toyota/Nissan..... FYI arc i actually like civics because we've had 4 of them over the past 13 years, starting with a 94 Eg8 and going through 3 ES8's.... still have one in fact and i much prefer it over a corolla or sunny.... :D

thanks dude. :) well now we have an 04 jap spec exi.... nothing fancy, just gets the job done.... i guess i would have liked it better if the car that it replaced wasnt a Pug 406 ;)

True, and that lack of demand is due to an absurd idea that the saloon is somehow more prestigous. The Sri Lankan car market is full of these absurd ideas. Like the famous english number syndrome. You can take a 300reg car that hasn't run as much and the manufacture year was later than a older, more run down english number car of the same model, and guess what commands more market price?

you seem intent on choosing the Safe\Boring option of a corolla i see...... well its your choice after all mate, but i honestly think you will enjoy yourself more if you looked into some of the other ideas here as well before making a buy...

and i don't think you can find unregistered 100 series corolla wagons anymore. they are all 10+ years old after all, Milindu might be able to enlighten you more.

anyway just my 2c.. good luck with the hunt :)

Cheers

Have you guys been living on the moon? Ur not getting any "latest" car for 1 mill. U'r looking at a 10 or more probably 15 year old car if ur getting that cheap. If ur father is insisting on the "latest" tell him he'll have to stop being so cheap and prepare to shell out some serious cash.
