...story goes that there was one 300SL in the island many many years ago, but it had been picked up by someone in the 80's and taken out of the island! :o

all hearsay though

Hmmm... thats interesting. Sad, but still interesting. I'll have to digg up that story...

Anyone's free to post more trivia :)

spoke to S_N - he's out n about so he wanted me to put something up as per your request to have something to have a go at :)

This is the car he wanted on , but i normally post only pictures of actual cars which are in and around the island.. so to satisfy his request but had to grab this image off the net - the car though not being too common is no exotic

Good job with that :) I'm pretty sure I went through half the cars through that era, but didn't think of AR! IF I'm right on the Bora, ya'll can have a go at this:

Mercedes Benz 300SL

yup, the 300SL gullwing to be exact. Here are some more pics of it.

I wasn't aware of the "available in SL only" rule...my bad.

are you invloved in the classic car scene in the states?

...you once did a piece on the Amelia Island Concourse right?

OT but...

Thanks.. glad to hear u liked them. here is the full album for the Amelia island concourse I am (sadly) only involved as an enthusiast when it comes to the timeless classics. I have been lucky to see some amazing cars and meet some iconic people at these events. Its nice to see the people as car guys away from all the commercial interest and hype. Its funny how a multi-million-dollar-car collector will chat with you about what they went thru to restore their cars, how they found the chassis, engines, lights, chrome etc.

I am not saying that there aren't snobs and wannabes (especially amongst the spouses and even organizers) but its the exception and not the norm.

as far as what it takes to restore a 100-point car, a lotta money and a lot more time. There are individuals that still win car shows but more and more "collections" are taking podium finishes these days. These are wealthy individuals or incorporations that hire coach builders and other tradesmen to finish their cars. You have to do a lot of research into the history of your car and try to make it as identical to when it left the factory OR when it was at the helm of its life (as is the case for race cars). You will loose points for fixing imperfections that were original to the model such as welding holes, and wide panel gaps.

these are different from the resto-mods that most of the 60s-70s era American cars are going thru right now. Where builders update the car's brakes, suspension etc. to make them more drivable.

never seen the actual car but from the seats its an E38 7 series, from the leg room its hard to say if its limo or not (7xxiL-eg 740iL), and from the chrome trim its a non sports package model. Also looks like the rear cup holders are working, he seems to be reaching for a cup (E38s and E39s had horrible cup holders). I guess they didn't go for the optional trunk fridge ... or since he is a politician, he doesnt need the magazine holders for any reading material :) how did i do?
