Land Rover Defender Maintenance

GMI

Question

Hi guys,

Bought a new Land Rover 90 an ex-STF chassis restored with 200 TDI engine.

Now many advices to seek as this is my first LR:

1. In the Service manual, it recommends “ATF Dexron IID “ oil for the Main manual Gearbox. This is bit wired for me as it recommends automatic transfer fluid for the manual box. Are you guys following this?

2. Please recommend places to buy a jack (may be high lift), a wheel brace.

3. A place to buy maintenance parts such as filters

4. A place to buy a set of 15” alloy/metal wheels (even used with good condition)

5. A place to buy a snorkel

6. A place to buy wide off-road tyres

7. On top of all please recommend me a good, trust worthy mechanic for maintenance jobs

I checked the above parts @ OutD___Man, and none of the above was available in their stocks.

thanks,

GMI

Machang the best place for all of that is Ind*k* at Rajagiriya.

Maintenance parts like filters and stuff are available at C*lonial and W*llys Tr*ding

Always go for AT's as they will last long.

If you need any help pls drop a mail

Excellent news GMI - very happy to see another LR owner around :)

1. I assumed your Gearbox to be an LT 77 , on that basis that your running a 200Tdi - i refered my manual with regard to the gearbox oil issue and it has recommended the following oils : (keep in mind though that some of these product lines/brands might not be available as the manual is 14yrs old!)

BP Autran G

Castrol TQF

Duckhams Q-Matic

Esso ATF Type G

Mobile ATF Type G

Fina Purfimatic 33 G

Shall Donax TF

Texamatic Universal

As Gummybr mentioned,Genuine Land Rover parts are available at COLONIAL Motors (2323342) on Union Place. Willy's Trading (Ibbangwala Junction on Union Place & Panchikawatta) also carried a stock of Land ROver components.

In addition to which let me also suggest ROVER MOTORS (0714047449)

Land Rover rims (at least the original ones) are downright expensive :(

16" is essentially the size to have..

Imperial Motors on Hyde Park corner have genuine Land Rover Deep Dish alloys - Rs.228,000

However, Rover Motors had set of used Range Rover tri spoke rims sometime back going at 1/6th the above cost...

Big Mud tires are recommeneded only if your going to be doing a lot of off roading. bacause for normal road use they are rather bothersome..

the tread life is short , they get very noisy and if the tires are really broad thesteering is gonna feel rather heavy.

Best option and the idea compromise would be to go for All Terrain tires.

For tires try the usual set of suspects... (check the Tire thread for cars on the AL forum - it will have contact info or rather brand-agent related info)

I can recommend a few good mechanics - my contact info should be on the Memebers details page - drop me a text sometime

Hi,

Was just browsing and saw this post.

As a Land rover owner myself I must thank you both ( gummbr & you) as the info is invaluable.

My oldie too has a Left front wobbly wheel - needs a new one ! Not the wide ones though, keeping mine original spec.

This imageshack stuff is greek to me, or would have loaded some pics by now .

Bent my friont bumper trying to jerk a tree stump out of da ground :action-smiley-060: need to get a welder to heat the sucker up and bash it back in place <_<

cheers

Hi GMI

Congrats bro!

Mate we have lot in common when it comes to motoring.

Theres nothing much to add after Gummy’s and Devinda’s comments.Indika is very good and trustworthy.

Motorcade had good Landy filters and jacks .AC Paul had good chrome and Matt olive green bracers.Visit Souhaine’s yard for Landy leftovers. He had many rare unpacked spares, snorkels, wheels (he is out of town but his guys are there). You can replace all lens covers at a low cost (Indian & Taiwanes good stuff) from the joint next to Panchikawatte sub post office, neighboring Sumana.

Mini club brother duo Dirk & Mark are specialists on Landies. They will give you priceless guidances and helps. I always depend on them. Feel free to contact them.

Oh yes I forgot motorcade,

BTW I saw some original Boost Alloys for around 185k in Kelaniya, a new place called Imantha Inetrnational on biyagama road.

Also Imperial should have almost all filters as they have imported some recently.

Hey Devinda, no idea of upgrading the engine on yours??

OT: Devinda, did you be anychance get to go in Chipmunk's Range??

Remember the 300tdi Transfer box needs Power steering fluid.. (if im not mistaken)

By the way does anyone know what happend to the 6x6 Range rover Which was out in the tender last week at Welisara Nevy camp.

That was a big bastard with a thursty petrol engine V8 and it had done only 3100 miles.

GMI - Congrats mate...Happy to welcome another landrover guy. As GummyBr correctly mentioned Indika would be the right person to go for....Bear this in ur mind That land rover maintenance is rather heavy on ur wallet.

Wow… all the info I will need for the next year is here…. Thanks guys…

I bought the machine from Souhain with Mark’s and Dirk’s support at their level best.

It runs a 200 TDI (said to be very low mileage) with a LT77 on an ex-STF chassis with a restored body. I will still have to complete the restoration on rear seats (no rear seats at all) and rear upholstery – thought of meeting Indika on Saturday.

Thanks again guys.

no machna - was thinking about swapping it a while back , but i wanna keep it 100% original :)

its a little under powered , that i'll admit, but for the simple colombo running it does its more than sufficient

i want to , but haven't got an opportunity to  - the the ride in the LR3 was AWESOME :D

Your kinda right Lakshan , but i think its the other way round...

The power steering units use Automatic Transmission Fluid ! :)

aiyo how did i miss this! :( i've been waiting for it to come out so i could go have a look at it...

some ppl who've had personal expereince with it say its an awesome drive - but its said to be 6x4 in terms of power to the wheels

any idea what kinda reserve they might have had in terms of the price on the Range Rover ??

Hey as long as its a LR engine its original. I believe your running a 12J, anyway its up to you to do what ever you want.

The Range flies with the tuned 300Tdi, maybe not as much as a chipped Td5, but it does go.

Perhaps you are referring the 300 TDi he had. I was about to buy that but ended up with his 200 TDi.

If you don't mind me asking how much does one of these babes cost thesedays ? You can give a rough figure if you do not want to reveal the purchase price.

I’ve been searching for a Defender for about 2 months now. I was looking for 200/300TDi’s. The prices of 90’s were ranging from Rs.2.4Mn ~ 3.2Mn.

110’s were from Rs.3.7Mn ~ 5.5Mn.
