Bmw M1 Reincarnated!

The BMW M1 is back! Well, sort of. This is the M1 Hommage, a concept study unveiled and organised by BMW at the Concorso d'Eleganza di Villa d'Este 2008 this weekend. The where?

The Villa d'Este is an upmarket little concourse on the banks of Lake Como. The sort of place, in fact, that you'd expect to find a mint 1978 M1, so just the sort of place to introduce this to concept celebrating the 30th anniversary of the original M1.

With similar proportions to the original M1 - though with a longer wheelbase - the Hommage sits wide and low, and frankly looks a little bit scary. Sinister, even. In a nod to the M1's flip-up headlights, the four headlights hide behind the front fascia, meaning they're near-invisible until lit.

More echoes of the Seventies icon can be seen in the slatted rear deck and bonnet vents, but that strange love-it-or-hate-it 'flame surfacing' is pure modern Bangle styling. There are, of course, the standard high-concept touches - tiny wing mirrors, invisible door handles, oversized shiny alloys...

So is this the forerunner for the much-rumoured mid-engined competitor to the Audi R8? Erm, no. Sorry. BMW is at pains to point out that the Hommage is a mere design exercise in celebration of an icon, and makes no mention of even theoretical powertrains or, in fact, any technical details of any kind.

We reckon the 4.2-litre V8 from the M3 would fit rather nicely under that rear deck, BMW. Just a suggestion...

While I don't know what frying pans looked like in 1972, the rims are about the only thing that I'm not enthusiastic about. But thats also the most easily changed :) A nice deep dish would go well on this, IMHO.

Well, the rims and those badges on the back.

The badges on the back are a straight lift from the original M1 though, And i think the rims are supposed to be a modern interpretation of the originals as well.. :)

It didn't look great in the old one either :) The badges, that is. What's wrong with having it in the middle?

well, it was designed in the 70's.... a desire to be different perhaps?

The front end looks awful for me. The overall design is too fussy and will date fast IMO. The original had cleaner lines and that's why it look great even today!

Looks like Chris Bangles' ghost is still haunting BMW design studios :D !

  • 4 weeks later...

BMW seems to have gotten on board the cocept bandwagon as well with another due to be shown to the public on the 10th of June

enter the Gina Light Visionary Concept

The car works and can be seen being transported to BMW’s museum in Munich, Germany,

Its takes the form of sport roadster - lines are undistinguishable with all that covering in place :(

you can just see Bangles had in this when you spot the lines , which are rather reminiscent of the Z4 might i add...

some say the car is made of some stretchable fabric - neoprene perhaps some speculate..

the idea is to have the car shape and morph on the go with this "skin" like fabric substance forming into place over a carbon fibre frame of sorts! :o

all nice but its apparently on a the old Z8 platform though! <_<

well the badge placement is as it was on the original M1

might be stretching a fair bit on this but the Lamborghini esq styling might have something to do with the fact that the original M1 was due to be built by them, but didn't quite materialize..
