[Civic 2018] One year later...

Well it's almost an year now so a quick update on what has happened. Ive done 12500 kms at this point and the car has had two oil changes as well as a wheel alignment done by now. By this point the civic is as common as the flu now.

Fuel Consumption

The most asked question still, and at10,000+ kms we are well past engine break in etc and we can have a fair idea on actual fuel figures. The 12,500 Km mostly consists City driving, a bit of expressway, and the once a month outstation trip. Overall fuel consumption is about 10KMPL. If further elaborated on average City fuel consumption stands around 8 -9 Kmpl. In the suburbs and outstations it will do anywhere between 10-12. Anomalies being about 15 (6L/100Km) on expressways and on smooth sailing road trips like Trinco.

The Ground Clearance Issue

Honestly, I was worried about this at the start but it doesnt seem to be a big issue. One thing I noticed is that the suspension is much firmer on the Civic hence the lowering of the car even with a load is much less. On one instance I took a slightly elevated railway crossing at a bit of speed (my bad) I thought I may have sightly nicked the Muffler but I really could not see any damage at all and I wasnt sure I heard a slight sound. But as @Magnum (who drives a ground huggin' HiAce) says over time you get used to be aware of your cars height and drive accordingly. The Wide wheels also help on pothole ridden roads as they hardly fall into them...The small unpaved road leading to my house is in a horrible condition (due to a combination of Trucks hauling stuff to the neighbours house under construction+ the never-ending rain ) there are deep  nasty ruts that my other ride ( EP71 Starlet) with its tiny wheels fall into but is never a problem for the Civic.

Are the gizmos giving trouble?

The automatic braking might end up being a life saver but on day to day drives it can be bothersome. The whole thing is over dramatic and the braking is sudden and violent. When a biker suddenly moves in and the auto break kicks in its sudden, violent and introduces the risk of Madushani who was tailgating you in her Honda Dio ramming you from behind.

Proximity Sensors are actually helpful specially when parking (the car is wider than your Aqua/Fit etc ) there is though a mild annoyance  that has happened to me half a dozen times in an entire year. The front proximity sensor goes bonkers and starts beeping in heavy rain even when theres nothing in front. A forum member suggested that  a misaligned License plate could be the culprit - I haven't investigated that yet since I've not seen this behaviour lately.

The Rain Sensing Wipers tend to over react sometimes working full speed when theres actually not much rain. All these of course can be manually changed.

Automatic Stop Start might not be a good idea for our local traffic and some users complain of the 12V battery prematurely dying. Remember this is no hybrid so the entire stop start cycle is handled by the battery alone ... Also it can be frustrating when your engine stops and you get green in heavy city traffic. I usually turn this off.

Adaptive Cruise control and Lane Keep Assist work like a charm. The sensors detect vehicles moving into your lane as well.

The motion sensor inside the car will detect movement inside the car when its locked and will start to create a racket - the idea behind this is to prevent locking in a kid or a pet. Almost every Civic user has had the surprise of the alarm going off due to a couple of flies getting trapped in the car. This also can be turned off.

Performance

I've seen some people assume the car to be slow due to the tiny engine and turbo lag but actually I feel the CVT is the biggest disappointment but in reality I'd settle for the slightly lethargic CVT than getting continuous DCT issues down the line. To have some fun turn Eco Mode off and switch to Sports mode - you can use the paddle shifters but to be honest the paddle shifters are more or less a simulation...CVT and paddle shifters are really not an ideal combo. Another thing I usually do on a cold start is to leave the engine running for a bit (2+ minutes) before actually moving. Do not rev too hard initially.

The handling is really nice - the car  is made for open roads and long road trips. I drive on E03 regularly and enjoy taking the bends - the car feels really solid and planted. Braking is good. I've seen videos of  folk test the cars limits by driving 200+ km/h, braking at high speed etc (mostly on E03) its dangerous and illegal.

Mods done

Nothing much actually all I've done so far :

*Alloygators (19K at the Meguiars place )

* Nano coating (45K )

* Transparent protective film on the Door steps

Overall Verdict :

A year of trouble free happy motoring. Yes this is no hybrid and requires 95Oct. But thats a small trade off for a rather complete car for a sub 6Mill budget(SR). The car is a bit wide for a hatch (probably in Mazda 6 territory) so you are better off avoiding those mysterious little by-roads google maps suggest. This is no Wagon R .The car will not double up as an SUV so if you regularly travel on some remote jungle path this is not the car for you. If you live in a narrow tuk tuk lane and drive 20Km in heavy traffic you are going to appreciate the legroom and seat position but not getting to enjoy the car that much.  The car is at home on the open roads and highways. A slightly wide, attention seeking drama queen thats quite easy to live with.

Nice one bro. I did not know it had an on board motion sensor. What about the heated mirrors? Should be helpful these days.

Thanks bro - yeah the sensor is located near the lights cluster ...the rear window de-fogger and mirror heater is a switch located near the climate controls  - its useful in the rain these days.

Awesome!?

The sportiest-looking & most fun new car you could buy besides the new Mazdas &  Swift RS.

Is it just me or is the fuel consumption a bit on the high side? For a 1.0L Turbo?

Also my first time learning about the on board sensor.. reminds me, when I was a kid, dad would tell me to stay in the car when he has some quick office work to do or has to go the shop, when he's back, he would get scared as to where I had gone (hiding behind the rear seat, all tucked down..give him the scares for a sec :P)..wouldnt work anymore though.

8-9 in city is pretty much ok I guess for an ICE car....I had a GP1 which managed about 12 under the same conditions despite being a hybrid....

I guess they have given a lot of thought about locking in someone inside the car - if you hold down the unlock button on the remote for a bit all 4 windows will open slightly allowing air to circulate

Well then, I guess the economy is acceptable. Maybe the Swift RS does the same.

Also the vezel had a similar feature too but here you hold down the lock button and all windows shut & mirrors fold. Or maybe all new cars have that feature ? friends were impressed with that back then though. But that feature in the civic is so convenient!

Hope you continue to have an enjoyable, worthwhile & safe experience with it!

Going through review I realize how similar the car is to the Corolla Sport, mine came with TRD body kit which reduces the already low ground clearance by further 20mm you get used to drive with care and avoid certain roads/ places can be a pain if it is your only car.

kmpl similar engine perky throughout the rev range/ damn CVT ruins the whole experience.

Safety nanny can be pain in the a** couple of times it did not allow me to reverse the vehicle to the road

Traffic keep up feature useless as it keeps too much distance with the car in front and slow down is too aggressive and not at all comfortable.

Radar cruise and steering assist is excellent in the highway car can virtually drive it self.

Handling excellent, grip from 225/40/18, sport seats gives excellent side support, steering could be little more direct although not bad for a Jap (Toyota). Wish it had little more power may be 150bhp +

Rear space and boot space may not be not up to Civic

Runs happily on 92, a substantial saving when you do 20K km / year

Hope get better resale in 3-4 years being a Toyota with a 4 port engine

Good alternative to Civic

The Civic and the Corolla Sport are pretty equal...however the CIvic does feel more engaging and more responsive..with the Corolla Sportt you feel the lower power but I feel the Corolla Sport is a easier and softer car for long runs and just sitting around in Traffic (which goes back to what these two cars were way back in the past). As for the steering well....I wold not say it is not direct...it is pretty responsive and the TNGA frame is nimble and turns in quite well....but there is a certain weird "what the heck is going on" feeling to it as it doesn't have the linearity you would expect when you are steering.

Few Corolla Sports around. Got mine personally imported on my better half's permit for mainly her use. Fell in love with the thing much better in town and highway than the Macan.

Wait..So what's the Macan's role now? Larger family hauler?

Also a bit biased here, but I don't understand why no one is importing the new swift sport 1.4 turbo? It's a real quick grocery getter so it's a bit surprising there aren't any.. Or are there any in the island that I'm unaware of?

1.4 would mean higher tax youd probably end up paying more than the cars purchase price. The 1.0L boosterjet powered swift isnt bad either...but they are hard to come by. A friend wanted to import one earlier this year and the auctions only had high mileage low auction grade units ....eventually he ended up with a Civic SR.

Yes mostly outstation runs and early morning week end drives.

A 1.4L Swift will have the same tax as a Audi Q3/A4/A5 so who would want to get one

The reason I went with the Corolla was the 1.2L engine and I only had to pay Rs. 265K over the permit so it made sense. I basically I paid only for the car. As no one from SL was interested I got the car for around Yen 1 Mn. less than what it would have cost new. It was used with 6k on the clock auction grade 5.

Oh, that sucks for the swift. Such a handsome car with loads of options & tuning potential/reliability. Wish to see a review on your corolla!

Also I think you meant 'clock' :)

Nice write up ? Mine crossed the 6K mark as well. All in all I'm happy with the buy considering the feature set for the price paid. in addition, some of the things I noticed

  • Rapid de-acceleration from 70 to 0 triggers some type of collision preparation mode, the hazards came on automatically (allegedly the brake lights blink as well, this is according to a friend, could not verify as I was driving)
  • A friend had the AC evaporator getting punctured after a cruise down the express way at 100. Apparently this is a design defect.
  • Had the TPMS playing havoc a couple of times, but no issues after recalibration. My guess is, the TPMS works by measuring the rotations ( ABS sensor data) as the valves in the Civic look like the normal ones.
  • The plain cloth interior (mine is an SR) needs a fair amount of TLC especially if you have kids who didn't financially contribute when you bought the car.
  • Consumption ranges between 7-8.5 kmpl with Eco and Auto Off. The car is mainly used for the school run
  • Had the first puncture, fixed it with the trusty Stop & Go Tire Repair kit. (Luckily I invested in a jack and a spare wheel)
  • Updated the garmin maps a couple of time just for kicks, worked each time like a charm. Love the directions appearing in the center of the dashboard.
  • Had a motor cyclist knock the right side mirror. The upper part of the cover came off but no clips were broken so it went back in with a little persuasion. Again, luckily, the paint protecting wrapping did it's job.

Hi everyone. I owned a Honda CR V 2019 vti lx Australian model and it has built-in GARMIN Australia and New Zealand map. I want to replace it with Sri Lanka map. Anyone know how to do that?

True - mine's SR too and really the interior is a dirt magnet plus the fabric on the seats are pretty abrasive.

hi

has anyone converted from R1234yf to R134a in their civics/fk6s?

has anyone experienced any issues with the audio? like no audio but other sounds and notifications (i.e. seat belt) works well?

why would you want to change the original gas? Was there a leak?

Audio- yes there have been a few glitches but nothing too glaring. Screen went dark but was fixed after a reset and Bluetooth doesn't always connect. Pairing/unpairing fixed the issue.

If you are having audio issues do a reset.

Thank you RWD.

already done 31k. checked with several service providers and they confirm they have come across few units with condenser leaking issues. It seems Honda worldwide has already address this issue for newer units and provides a 10 year warranty. prices for R1234 gas ranges between 45k to 60k and the condenser ranges from 55k to 100 k. total cost is likely to be around 150k. however, my condenser has no leaks so no problem just top up the gas.

as for the Audio, there has been few videos with no audio and Honda had issued a pen drive to get the 'Repro' updated. i have done all sorts of reset and non worked. i even went through the internal settings (bright+off+menu) to check. some of the local audio service providers has no clue and are afraid to deal with this. may be a software glitch. AMP shows green in the internal settings so the AMP may not be muted. still in the search of solutions.

Hahah yet to see that but I remember your comment how you eventually get used to driving a relatively low car...

no big mods planned yet - I'm probably gonna run this stock for a bit I've got a lot of mods planned on an older-than-me starlet but I do like to do something with the lamps actually.
