  1. So for a spirited convo like this old times; ?BYD 

    My father has gone ninja about getting one, despite being the new hype/fad here these are common across the world and I've seen a few cross 100,000km in Nepal and Australia.

    Seal - Looks nice, very premium interior but too low for my applications

    Sealion - Very Premium, feels very well built, BUT that 1.5L on that reasonable chunk of car with a measly 18KW battery seems like a recipe for trouble, incase they sink in value at least the fuel economy must justify that (They say it's a BYD engine - though the lore is it is a hyundai engine)

    Atto 3 - Most sold from their lot apparently, common af, Seems to be the best bang for buck IMHO, Its electric since BYD is famed for that, Interior is kinda good, the thing is larger than a vezel but not too large like the Sealion, cheap mobility I guess with less things to go wrong

    Dolphin, almost a smaller atto and again too car like and not suited for my application.

    JK nailed it on the price and distribution but the only guaranteed thing here is the lot are gonna muck up the aftersales. The Kandy center staff behave like the crew from a Govt. post office.

    What are your thoughts and opinions? Could this be the next Wagon R or is this a passing fad like the Micros of 2000s-2010s?

      Most businesses, thrive in grabbing opportunities and exploiting the tiniest loophole, and in this instance JKCG are no exception. I found it funny when people at the launch were mentioning the agent, as another reason for choosing BYD. I'm quoting someone word to word " ...positive is its imported by JKH So there's value there"

      I mean just because their supermarkets function slightly better than their main competitor  how did they suddenly become a trusted agent for EVs? Do you expect them to function any different to other agencies? 

      I do hope at least some of the 1000+ potential consumers have a means to ensure they do not end up getting screwed. At the same time, customs/GOSL need to have a proper direction than acting like headless chicken - at the moment they seem clueless (heck even with Temu/ali express packages) it's almost as if customs are like "oh um wait ...we have not decided what to do with this...so hang in there till we think of something".  They need to get their $4it together.

      @matroska..the customs department has been one of the most questionable institutions for decades. I strongly believe it was in their (the individuals') interest to keep things foggy.

      So as a follow up to the conversation,

      Well we cancelled the Atto3 Order,

      imho its a good car, the mother company is good enough, cars are tech laden, with the times blah blah, 

      But the reason why we let go was purely JK;


      1. Like i mentioned prior, their correspondence is abysmal, its like we beg them for the car. Given the troubled times they are having, they should at least have staff capable of comforting the blow. The cancellation itself was a 7 day operation, with a lot of begging, calling bosses, almost like a Govt. unit mission.

      2. Imagine doing that with a warranty commitment for 8 years, on a tech laden car with finicky electronics and an aging battery, hell no!

      3. The charging network, despite JK claiming to have 20 charging stations and the sheer volume of EVs being dumped into the road network, in the event that I need a charge, I might have to lay at a charging point for 2-3 hours. Even with the other charger companies

      4. Their after sales care, almost 50% members who are avid BYD fanatics have gone feral after the pathetic service centers they run, esp. the Kandy one. Lack of trained staff, poor etiquette what not.

      5. Customs matter and hype; according to my knowledge, I mean even if its 150 or 100kw the whole hoo haa is going get every vehicle pinged at the customs, and then possible recalls to customs what not. Not worth the hassle.

      6. It costs almost the same figure in fuel cost to charge these in a charging station thus..

       

      Lastly another isolated concern, the jokers at CEB have declined the on grid connections at all 3 of my properties claiming grid congestion. So end of that also.

       

      So decided to go with the flow and get down a less blingy Vezel, will be importing it myself straight from a Jap Dealer so cost wise it maybe approx 3mil more than an Atto3. 

  2. Yup some of the Land Rover Transmissions - LT77 - R380 (Defender) etc. the norm is to use ATF. GL3 GL4 GL5 conventional oils make it hard to shift.
  3. Curious about what happened to the FTOs though, As far as I know the only 4-5 cars that are here were awarded to those 90s Athletes. Few intermittently show up in poor condition, as far as I know there is one silver car in good nick
  4. What is the deal with the car market these days!!

    I went to check on a Jimny, 2016 2nd owner and he's hellbent on 6.8mil for the thing,

    approx 50000km+ mileage

    Needs tyres, rear shock absorbers leaking and there has been an aircon repair as well.

    (Approx 400k LKR in pending repairs making the total 7.2mil)

    Whereas a brand new one can be imported between 8.2-9.5 given the grade and winning bid.

    I ponder what the mentality is of the people of this country...🤣

      story seems to be legit by the now second owner, used by an elderly lady,

      Car was imported with 6600km and used by the current family since 2019.

      Kinda does not add up but like you said coz I have an old rocky that has 285,000km and I changed the original factory adjustable dampers last month, that also coz they didn't leak but the bushings were not salvageable. Tried teflon inserts but it made the problem worse.

      Well, you can't make a blanket assumption about parts like that...my AE101 Corolla Wagon has 56,000km and it just got its second suspension set put on. First was in 2014 when the car had just 15,000km. Even if the car doesn't run just sitting idle does put a toll on the dampers. Plus the rubber bushings start to dry up and then wear off.

      As for the car market...I also feel that as predicted by some, the car prices have not seemed to have come down that much. Used Jimny becomes 7.2mil after repairs and the cheapest new import is 8.2. Everyone capitalizes on the fact that the extra 1mil that is needed is not something easy for most to come by (if it was then they would have gone and bought the new car anyway).

      I was looking at a personal import via an importer. Low mileage jd64 660cc jdm. This is narrower than the jd74 1500cc model.

      Comes to around 8.4 8.5

      Not worth it for a kei 2 door. For that money one can fetch a well done up Land cruiser 70 or 73 or get a fixer upper and go anal on it.

       

      If I sell something I own I might consider a 2017 one low mileage one.

      That's nice, that's a good price but you will need to do some work on it to get a bit more performance. Wider track, maybe a turbo upgrade etc. interestingly the 5 door comes only with the 1.5l and is made in India.

Also "market bahinawa" We live in a funny country, we have a CR Lingo any old diesel from 31sri 32- 64- 65- 325- New Body Fitted or New Engine Fitted - is the bomb Anything new - New Body Fitted , New Engine Fitted = just run Also DMT work in the yester years, You feel like giving up all and go buying an unreg or used wagon R/ alto. I have had a few engine swaps done previously with legal work and have paid from 100,000 to 10 times that to get the registration work clear. I recently had to pay 80k just to register a 100% legally imported bike with proper particulars, that too under the current regime. The examiner was so fat, his belly didn't allow him to bend down to see the chassis no of the bike, he requested us to lift the bike to a level he can bend to see the chassis no. The bike being heavy no one could lift it that high, finally a gent brought a mirror for him to take a glance at the chassis no from above his belly. Imagine the state.
  9. @Hyaenidae It was a pun towards a video circulating on fb of a gent boasting the capabilities of a civic 1L and then the commentors having a ball afterwards. They bought the 1.5L en-bloc and swapped, seemed to be running well except that the engine numbers were scribed locally and down the line people will buy them assuming to be having a 1L engine where the actual engine is a 1.5L. At the rate the DMT is going, only a matter of time when they come looking.
  10. Most of those 1L (gear thuna) civics have engine and turbo rebuilds done now. Some have been illegally swapped to 1.5L and numbers scratched. Let alone the operator error by people trying to rice them with fiber ware, ecu reflashes and exhausts.

      The current trend aside, for a third-world country that has been yo-yo-ing with bankruptcy for a few generations , Sri Lankans have an unhealthy and almost American-like obsession with private vehicles.

  13. The 1HZ is a very torquey low rev engine, not designed to run on par with modern engines. Its very low stress and built to run a million km easy, built for the land cruisers of the 80s and 90s. This question seems a bit like a no brainer and troll-like. Or maybe OP confused 1HZ with 1HD?
