Thanks to wikipedia. Apparently this is something called a Nissan R'nessa. Nissan simply had too many models Expand Well...Japanese manufacturers are known to have 20-50 models in the JDM sphere. Most are derived out of the same platform. The variations in models were either to attract a certain customer base or increase market reach through different sales channels. Now the R'Nessa. Disaster of a vehicle for Nissan. They had plans for 5000 or something units of monthly sales but right off the bat started with around 1000. I remember the Japanese media being harsh towards the end as Nissan was selling only a few dozen of the model towards the end. Mechanically the car is brilliant. Has the usual Nissan SR engines and has drive trains typically found with SR engines. It was the interior design and concept. Ideologically. Wonderful. Execution...really bad. It has what Nissan calls Limousine Seats. So typical plush seats and both front seats can be rotated to face the back seat. Two problems emerged. Because of the way the driver's seat had to be mounted to accommodate the rotation, apparently there really was no way to have a good driving position. You were either too far or too close or in a very awkward position. It was the same case with the front passenger seat but was bearable since there was no steering wheel and pedals. The biggest criticism of the car was the rear seat belts. Because of how the pillars (C) were positioned, the rear seat had to be in a very specific place for the seatbelts to be easily and safely worn in the back. If the seat was too front, the seatbelt would either be running too low across your chest or across your neck. If the seat was too back then the seatbelt would just be too loose (look at the attached pick and give it a bit of a think).

Expand I saw the video of the car for sale is Sri Lanka and was wondering whether Nissan absolutely nailed the sliding rear seats and the space the rear passengers had. It's only nowadays that this feature is appreciated. Also saw how the gear leaver is on the steering column, maybe that was to free space for the seats to be rotated. For me it would have been a fine car with 4wd and ground clearance. But it looked more of a car that had a mix match of parts. The doors seemed to be off a Primera, the front lights off a Avenir. Dashboard looks fresh. A bit of pulsar look to it as well.

During the period most of the rotating seat cabins were limited to larger wagons ike HiAces, Town/Lite Aces, etc... its just that the execution was off. Like you said..mix of mismatched parts and soe strage design choices that compromised on practicality.

Expand very interesting narrative - Nissan has always fascinated me as an automaker who were at times quite innovative and flawed at the same time- like a slightly mad brilliant scientist inventing something brilliant but also overlooking something obvious. The 90's when this came out was the beginning of the slide for them wasn't it? Kind of sad - it was the Datsuns that gave Japanese cars a global foothold and even in Sri Lanka Nissans apparently dominated the markets along with Mitsu decades ago. Expand Well....back in the day a 2.8 (? I thought it was) diesel engine, 1.6L petrol were actually not tiny. Perhaps at the time the norm would have been the 1L petrol which I doubt we got. Even size wise, for the time it was mid-size, and something like the J40 Land Cruiser the large size. Even though it was 2.8/2.7 I am pretty certain the power output was around 70 0r 80 hp. I believe some markets got turbo variants which pushed that to about 110hp. Quite bouncy. The rear suspension was very simple and primitive in today's standards. But feels like you can drive through a wall of rocks. Never driven one. But judging by the ride, it was pretty nippy. Even with 70 or 80hp considering the weight of the thing, it is no suprise I suppose. Some Ministries and even banks got a few fleets of these things. I recall almost all (at least the govt. ones) were dark green and had a hardtop and a few Ministries got them in truck form as well. My aunt worked for whoever were doing the Mahaweli project and that had the trucks, hardtops and a few soft tops.
