Resurfacing A Flywheel??

PrasannaDs

Question

Dear Experts

Recently I bought a EP91 Starlet and had to change the Clutch plats since experienced some issues with transmission . Then only I saw the prominent burnt spots on Fly wheel . ( Car was used by a lady in past 4 years )

I was told to resurface the flywheel by the technician and at that time I was not aware of the gravity of this process . And the lathe man did his job and later I realized that the clutch release process has become little harder that before .

Im new to the driving field and would like to get your comment on this matter. Will this effect on my engine / fuel and overall car performance in future ??

Thanks

To resurface or not to resurface depends on the amount of damage to the flywheel. To be perfectly honest if the flywheel is scratched with deep grooves the best option is to replace than to resurface. Resurfacing simply provides a smoother surface for the clutch to hold on to and ensure that the clutch lasts its natural life time. But the flywheel has a certain weight, a balance and also a certain required thickness to work properly. Resurfacing the flywheel or the pressure plate can cause issues with this and the clutch not to engage properly. A slipping clutch would mean fuel wastage.

However I do think the clutch release issue is probably not simply down to the flywheel being resurfaced. I think a competent mechanic should take the gearbox off and inspect the clutch the pressure plate the flywheel and the release bearing to ensure that everything is still working as it should.

Can you please be more specific about what you're experiencing during the release of the clutch pedal? Does the car stall?

Thank you for the quick response . I went through some of the forums and some have quoted that replacing the fly wheel is the better option than resurfacing while some of them have urged that lightning the surface help to perform well.

Is there any one who has done resurfacing and got any experience ?

Well .. Simply the clutch releasing point is found in last phrase of the process . I need to release the paddle to the end to identify the proper time to accelerate . This issue is very much prominent when the vehicle is reversed to a hill which result the burning odder as well.

Some people shave bits off the flywheel to lighten it and get better performance. To be honest this is something that needs to be done very carefully and will shorten the lifespan of the flywheel.

Your clutch sounds like it is slipping. If a mechanic cannot resolve it by adjusting the clutch you will have to consider replacing the worn out components.

Well those symptoms can mean many things.Such as a fault in the clutch pumps, blockage in the hoses etc.Checkout those small things before going straight to the gearbox and fly wheel. If it's the fly wheel that is at fault there are some tell tale signs like when you try to start the car the starter motor runs 'freely' without the engine turning over...

Thanks all. It seems I should find a good michanic as well. I might not be giving the perfect picture to you through finger tips .

Thanks again for your valuable time spent for me. Kindly update any thing which could be helpful on this matter in future as well.

My guess is that your clutch needs re-adjustment as The Don also has stated. Since the release point is towards the top (peddle position), even if you let go of the pedal totally, the clutch should still be in a position where it's not sitting on the flywheel perfectly (allowing it to slip). This explains the problems you're experiencing at inclines.

I suggest you get this looked at as soon as possible to avoid further damage to the clutch and the related components.
