Lancer Or Axio? Update: Bought A Lancer! (Aka The B.r.a.t.t. Thread)

Hello Experts,

Excited to join Autolanka forums Waited almost for month for an admin to approve me ... anyway, whoever the admin that approved me,

Last December, I sold my good old Maruti WagonR ( 2008 model, 5yrs old, driven for 30000+ Kms) For 1.6mil. I was searching for a good car to buy ever since. ( that's how I ended up on autolanka) So now that I finally got approved I thought it's time to get expert ideas on buying my new vehicle.

My budget is 3.5mil - 4.0mil. I wanted to buy a japanese car and browsing the internet, Finally I decided that there are two contenders:

1. Toyota axio 161 1.3 X Grade (2013)

2. Mitsubishi Lancer EX 1.6 GLX (2013)

Both the cars ( Brand New ) are being sold for 3.5 mil. for the permit. ( Lancer : 3,460,000 to be exact)

My priorities are:

-RELIABILITY
-Fuel Economy

-Spare Parts Availability

-Safety And comfort

-Handling

-Looks

- Resale value

Axio Dealers are mainly bragging of TOYOTA Reliability and Spare parts availability. They assured me I'm in deep trouble if I choose a mitsubishi because there are no spare parts in local market and I would have to buy spare parts only from agent paying a huge amount of money and I have to wait till eternity for mitsubishi agents to import parts from japan. And they also mentioned that unlike axio, I won't be able to sell the mitsubishi for a decent price. (if I wanted to, of course)

I called mitsu agents and they say they have spare parts for any vehicle they sell and I don't have to worry. However the sales guy said he have no idea on 3rd party parts availability.

So as you all can see i'm in a dilemma here. If you were in my position which car would you buy? And please be kind enough to mention why..

This is my first post on autolanka, so please go easy on me if I have offended any rule.

The manufacture might have recommended higher octane value in order to run the engine smoothly with minimum knocking.

Man on a mission! Good luck with the new car man. I hope you enjoy every bit of it. 95 will be needed for the engine to maintain the compression it is set up to. Otherwise it will knock and you don't want that.

Do a search in autolanka. You will be able to find more valuable info about octane values.

Open the LC with Commercial Bank foreign branch if you can. I am not marketing them but this is based on personal experience. After a lot of rasthiyadu with other banks, I went to them. It was a pleasurable experience. They may not show the 64-maayams but they know their business.

I believe zero-margin LCs are allowed again. But if you are buying the car off a permit, they may ask 110% margin but try to insist on 100%.

Delivery may take more than 3 months. This is because when you order the car, you are actually placing the order with the manufacturer. So they have to manufacture a car and bring it over. But check with agent whether they have any bonded vehicles (vehicles already in Sri Lanka and awaiting clearance). If you can ex-bond and take one of them, you can get the vehicle in a couple of weeks.

I thought they keep that 110% margin to avoid any loses caused of currency fluctuations. U**mo guys said that the bank will pay back that 10% if there were no sudden fluctuations of currency. Am I wrong?

As a Mitsubishi user almost from birth I'm completely sure you'r new car will satisfy you for the 5yrs till you'r next permit in a way that you will chose to buy another Mitsubishi for it (like what we do ).

My preference would be black with beige interior but if you have small kids specially boys it's better to go for a darker interior, not to forget the dog.

Or else if there was pearl white with it a black leather interior to make it even more sporty.(but as i heard they don't offer that color.)

And i think the projection head lamps will make the mean face of the lancer even more meaner. but i don't think for the budget of the car it would be worth to put down 400 000 for it,

A 1.3 Axio is no match for the lancer, specially as you are living in a hill country (around Matale i suppose, from you'r posts) you will have a hard time going up in a 1.3L

As to the lancer 1.6L it will be a pleasure to drive.

It will be even more fun if it was a manual.

The other thing you could have considered for the budget would be a Hyundai or a Kia

I guess the entry level sportage may be within you'r reach, those Koreans manual gears are a joy to shift specially in winding roads.

When opening the LC be specific about the car with reference to your Performa invoice, usually banks do this. If you are opening the LC direct to Japan (not local LC) be specific about the LC charges, if not required as per Performa pass the overseas bank charges to the beneficiary this will be around Rs. 30-50K.

U**Mo has a reputation for not sticking to dates given and after opening the LC make sure that you get a confirmation from them that the order is placed.

And as for the fuel requirement for the 2007 EX with the 1.5 L engine 90 was good enough although recommended was 95 (According to the user manual 90 was ok if 95 was not available)

On my 3 year ownership of the vehicle i switched to 90 when the price difference was widened and did not experience any loss of power, knocking or fuel economy.

Now that you have 92 I guess that would do cause most of the engines require 91 and higher.

Kush is right. The Ex 1.5 model has the knock control system so 90 octane can be used as an emergency measure. But clearly the engine performance level is reduced in that case.

The 3000 GT is not as highly rated as the 300ZX, NSX, Supra and RX7 (its competitors of the era) because it was generally considered to be a dull drive, The 4WD. active steering/suspension and all the electronics (and there were a LOT, including electrically adjustable aero aids!) made it very heavy and road testers of the time agreed that it just wasn't as fun to drive as the rest of the Jap super coupes. In terms of sheer tech the 3000GT was closer to the Nissan R32/R33 Skyline GTR than the rest but of course Godzilla knew how to turn the tech into a blinding driving experience.... The GT apparently didn't get that memo.
