Machang you've been here a while to know that we encourage people to search and read existing threads instead of opening new threads for everything. The GP has been discussed before.. so don't be lazy.. do a search next time...

You can read this thread and continue the discussion in one of the existing threads...

Just a small update. A large number of Grande Puntos were bought by rich people as their second/third vehicles, simply due to its appearance and high-end options (compared to other cars of that time). Most of those are of low mileage even now (less than 50k km). So do keep looking for one and u will find one in great condition.

There's a specialist doc who lives on the road next to mine. He's got a diesel GP (which was advertised on AL few months ago). He asked for 26. I guess whoever checked that car was asking for very low prices, so he decided not to sell it. Considering the way it has been maintained and the fact that it looks like it just rolled out of the production line, 26 is a very reasonable price for it.

My car did 12-14km/litre in Colombo and 18-21 km/l for long distance travel

There were no mechanical troubles with the car except for the famous gearbox issue. It doesn't cost much to repair it.

Diesel one does better in fuel.

Crosswind, how plentifu is the diesel one is compared to the petrol in our market?

GTAm do you have any idea of the numbers? I'm curious because spare part availability is somewhat based on that.

Can check. But numbers in total are around 150. Spares except body parts and lamps no issue to my knowledge.

The reguarly run cars tend to give less trouble than the very low mileage ones. No way around the gearbox fork issue but it can be adhusted a few times before finally the need to replace. Regularly run and serviced cars have proved reliable. Part such as the diesel pump is expensive, I've been told, but I would always choose a diesel over a petrol if you enjoy driving. I know it's usually the other way round but when the diesel has around 10 bhp more and tons more torque, there's a huge difference.

I see. Well for people like me parts aren't a big issue, but its annoying when you can't find simple things like service parts freely. Its funny how you seem to prefer the Diesel as well because of the low end torque. Does the Diesels have DPF?

Well let me put it this way. The 8V petrol engine is barely adequate IMO. The M-Jet has 90 and lots of torque. Will run rings around the petrol. I doubt the GP had a DPF. My Giulietta does though and it gave me a shock the first couple of times it unloaded the muck.

Approximately 95 petrols and 25 diesels were brought down by the agent at that time. A handful have been brought down by the current agent from India, but afaik none of those are sold.

I too agree about the diesel. The turbo is far more fun to drive than the petrol.

Same happened to me. When I advertised my Diesel people came up with low offers. So I decided to keep it for some more time. Still 42k on the clock.

With regard to Punto , the only problem is maintenance as few number of experts n parts dealers in SL. Otherwise this car is not considered as a failure by anyone. But in Japanese Autogear cars , there is a Button to release the gear, because of that no one needs to get lost in middle of nowhere. Any possibility to fix a Manual Gear Box instead of this Dualogic? And I guess this is ideal as a 2nd or 3rd vehicle and keeping other options open to face the repair period.

I am pretty sure there has to be a mechanism to release the gear in Punto .Different manufactures have different methods.

One of my friends uses a Diesel Punto as a day to day runner and averages about 3000km per month without any serious issues.

The Duologic gearbox is a manual. Not an automatic. It is a single clutch automated manual gearbox just like the early Ferrari F1 shift boxes and the Alfa Romeo Selespeed boxes. It does not have a torque converter but a clutch kit. So it is completely different from a regular automatic.
