Why would govt want to bring the rates down?

I'd say conditions are ripe for another tax hike to make some more money for the govt considering that yen is at an low and people are virtually priced out of non-hybrid market without a permit.

Heliopters are totally Duty(Some say 5% ,SL Customs doesn't know a HS Code (8802.12) according to a news paper article), VAT, NBT & Excise Tax free. Even for an election, other vehicles to be made all Tax free, unless ' Socialist Rebublic' Tag would not be fitted to SL.

According to Sunday Times there is a possibility that it will go down it seems.

"The introduction of 7 per cent non repayable VAT on vehicle imports reducing the current 12 per cent VAT by 5 per cent and further reduction of duty on hybrid cars and the increase of stamp duty of credit cards are some of the revenue proposals in the pipeline. "

This was exactly I read in one of the investment forums here as well.

That may be one of the reasons why one of the finance companies want to get ride of their loot before the budget.

I think they will increase the vehicle import tax, and will reduce some tax from essential goods. So they can hit the majority saying "podi minihata sahanayak dunna"
