As i was heard from some of the car uses, bellow concenrs needs to get clarified -

Since you are not targeting a particular vehicle or a fuel type I will give my comments assuming a mass market JDM gasoline powered car.

150+ is not a concern for a auto car as long as the auto transmission is maintained well. All what is required is to change the AT fluid on time with the proper type and clean up of the AT fluid sump and change of AT fluid screen at least once within the above mileage. However the chances of a AT box failure is higher compared to a manual one.

You can check the true mileage by scanning in some vehicles but not in all.

Overhaul is not required after 180+ (How did you come across this particular figure?) for most of the cars. In fact a well maintained gasoline car can easily do up to 300k kms before it needs an overhaul.

Shush!

150,000 and 180,000 are magical numbers written in religious scriptures dictated by none other than god himself and recited three times a day by the small-time baiyas who peddle marutis and bultos with extremely low mileages. According to these scriptures, all auto gear cars would suddenly race ahead of the manual ones and get their gearboxes failed when they reach 150k. And when they reach 180, they queue up on the nearest line to Edirisinghe Brothers.

There's only one verse in those religious scriptures that a buyer should remember.

"If thou buyeth a car, thou shalt verifyeth maintenance records and inspecteth the car thoroughly. If you owneth a car, thou shalt service and maintain it regularly without being a cheap-ass idiot. Blessed is he, who in the name of good will towards mankind, maintains the car properly without skimping." - Samuel L. Jackson, modified and adapted by Crosswind

Most manufacturers have recommended service items at specified mileage intervals which may (or may not for that matter) include things like changing gaskets, oil seals, checking+ adjusting valve clearences etc...but nothing drastic as a REQUIRED engine overhaul (presuming the car has been taken care of with proper services done).

Also note that some of the above service items;like changing seals,oil,etc...will need to be (or certainly advisable to be) done on a car after a certain period of time irrespective of what the mileage is (even if your car has only 20,000 km but 16 years old -> personal experience)

So like the others have said..MAINTENANCE !!

Mileage is just a milestone :) <sorry not as poetic as crosswind's close out>

Thanks for the valued replies... As Rumesh mentioned I was talking about Mazda BJ5P / BJ3P (2000 model) and Nissan bluebird car.

As many members have pointed out, what really matters is maintenance not the mileage. If a car is properly maintained, mileage is not much of an issue. If your concern is about the Mazda BJ series, I can safely say that it can do over 150,000km’s if properly maintained. My BJ5P which has an auto box have done more than 150,000 KM’s and it still shifts smoothly. Based on how it performs now, I don’t foresee a gearbox overhaul in near future either.

I knew a 1996 Ford Laser (same as Mazda BHALP) that had clocked 360,000km and was running without any major repairs. Pity that the owner had to clock it down to sell it to the stupid car-buying public of this country.

High mileage cars that are still running well are notches in belts in other countries, things to gloat over at the garage.... sadly our local yakos prefer to be fooled by those magic numbers, 125,000 and 145000 or even 60000.

Sorry mate, I have no thoughts of selling it in near future. Had so many fond memories with it and it’s like a member of the family now. Even if I decide to sell it, I’ll have a difficult time with my wifee and the kid as they are almost in love with it.

He hee.. That’s not a surprise, I’ve seen a BJ5P up for sale few months back with a mileage over 300,000Km’s. So, a BHALP with 360,000km's is not a surprise at all.

Couldn't agree more.. My Land Rover with just 340k in the clock raise a few eyebrows when mentioned. :D
