Hi

I'm planning to buy a vehicle for the first time and I have never owned a vehicle before. My budget is around 4m to 5m and I can barely extend it to 5.5m.

These are the things I expect

1. Fuel economy (This is a main concern)

2.Good ground clearance
3. Maintenance cost
4. Resale ability

I would love to own a SUV but fuel consumption and maintenance cost bothers me

These are the options I had in my mind

1. Honda fit 2015

2. Toyota axio 2015
3. Premio
4. Allion
5. Crv
6. Xtrail
7. Hillux

I do not have any experience owning a vehicle before , please kindly let me know the cost of purchasing and the year of the vehicle too.

I would say go for the CRV just coz its the least car i see on the road these days, all else are tuk tuks for me. :)

and also u prefer a SUV so why not... we can all get bothered n tell you what to buy but best is to get your self to the agents or a car joint and have a test drive IF possible and see if you like it or not.

I hope u dont take offense to this, but since you said this is your first car I have to ask. How good is your driving ? Your budget is hoing to get you a whole lot of car. So I hope u are able handle it and not put dings all over it of hurt someone or yourself in the process.

You can go for a 2008 Santafe a good condition one will be in the lower edge of you'r budget and you will have some spare cash for repairs,

It's a SUV it's cheap to run and not that expensive to maintain,

If you want something newer you can go for a newer Tucson or sportage around 2013

How many miles per month will you generally run on this vehicle? City driving or long distance? Do you plan to use it in Colombo rush hour traffic? And if you can extend your budget to 5.5 million, you can consider Mazda Axela hybrid as an option too.

Thanks a lot for the responses

Muditha420 I really like the CRV . But I do not know anything about it's fuel economy and maintenance cost
iRage Hope I will be really really careful till I get used to it :D . I want something reliable and with less troubles. Any advises for a newbie ?
Uditha88 Nope not that lucky . I'm planning to use this for another 4 to 5 years . So thought of buying something in this range.
Clark's son I'll add the three options you mentioned to my list .

ramishkad I would daily travel around 40 to 50 KM. I will include around 15 KM of city driving and rest outside with no traffic most of the time . I really like the mazda axela . But I have some broken roads to pass by and that concerns me a bit . Again thanks a lot for the responses

If you are worried about the broken roads then you should be looking at Crv, Xtrail, Hillux in your list. But these dont do good in fuel as the cars that you have listed. Another option is the Vezel, but different people have different opinions about the Vezel.

People complain that 1500 cc engine in vezel is not enough and I have seen there's a trend in selling the vezels purchased in 2014 and 2015.

What about Navara is that a good option too ?

If you don't mind a pickup truck and you have to travel on broken roads then the Hilux should be the number 1 choice. Get the newest one you can with the lowest possible mileage in your budget, have it checked out properly (preferably by the agent) and go for it. They are pretty solid trucks even now, though perhaps not as rock solid as the older ones.

A Hilux would be a handful as a first car though I think, since it's not the easiest thing to maneuver around traffic and to park. And OP seems to be taking fuel economy as the pivot point. Not that we don't have enough of them, the Vezel seems to be the best bet here.

So I will leave out the options Hillux and Navara due to the fuel economy , Less comfort and handling (Since this will be my first ever vehicle)

Vezel was the #1 option I had in mind at the beginning , but I heard lot of complains from vezel owner's as well , can't risk buying vehicle like that . I will have to leave that also out . Unless someone can really comment on the vezel . I'm coming into assumptions based on the things I have heard about it :)

How bad are these broken roads? Is it impossible to drive a car without being hit or are you concerned about the wear and tear, parts like shocks?

If you are concerned about the later, you'll probably have to go for a 4x4 capable car with sophisticated gear to handle rough stuff (correct me if I'm wrong).

As per the options, unfortunately only Vezel comes to my mind (I neither used it nor love it) :)

How about a newer Lancer EX GLS? It got a really good ground clearance and would be economical as well.

Yeah, that was noted machan. Premio and Allion are listed in our OP's original list. I though "So why not Lancer EX?" :)

not specifically for u. due to the fact that SUVs & Pickups came to the list.....

and also afaik allion, premio avrage around 11-12 as that of Lancer is say 8-9?

I have used both the Premio and the X-trail(petrol) in the list and i can safely say the Diesel santafe is more economical than both.

It's easy to drive like a car (that's because my mom uses it without any issues) so it would be easy to drive for some one new to cars.

Is a SUV so can take some hard roads,

The same can be said about the other korean diesels - economical, easy to drive, comfortable, and cheap to buy.

Only downside is that they wear out a little bit earlier than the japs.

So they satisfy all his concerns.

How much do things like a Daihatsu Terios or Toyota Rush go for ? Those things have small engines so I don't think it will be as gas guzzling as a CR-V or X trail and it has the ground clearance.

Posted

The roads are not that much damaged like off road anything . But if I get a vehicle with a reasonable ground clearance life would be much easier for me .

I personally do not like the korean vehicles . Since I need to sell it back in a few years without much hassle

I'm still not convinced to buy a vezel since I have heard loads of complains about it .

Lancer EX gls I do not know the year of the vehicle that I would be able to buy for this price range.

Anyone has an idea about the ground clearance of premio and allion . They would be ideal for me .

Pickups were mentioned because Pickups were in the original list the OP posted. As for the fuel economy argument, don't forget that the pickups are diesel powered, modern Hiluxes do 8-9 KM/l easy if they are manuals and the lower cost of the fuel itself also adds up over the long term.

I do agree that if OP has never driven a vehicle regularly before a Hilux might be a bit tough to get used to, but it certainly isn't impossible,
