Grey dust-like substance under the gear lever

Question

Posted

I opened the gear lever cover and found that there is some grey dust like stuff spread around the area and on the base of the lever rod. Is this from the degrading faux-leather cover or something else??

Highly unlikely..there really is nothing there except for the boot cover, plastic and other material from the bezels, cables, etc...

If the shifter mechanism has a plastic frame with nylon bushes in them, then black dust is pretty common as the nylon bushes wear out.
