Bertone - Famous Italian Design House is now bankrupt after its Illustrious founder Nuccio Bertone died some years ago. This is really sad news for the Italian car industry and especially for fans like me :( .

Not only did Bertone give the world some stunning shapes but many of the greatest designers started their career there. The best examples are Marcello Gandhini and Giogetto Guigiaro. Alpart from the stunning super cars like the Lambo Miura, Countache and the Lancia Stratos there are cars in SL too that are familiar to us. Examples are the Citroen Xantia and the "Upali" Mazda.

Poor management by the his widow and daughter has seen the company head groundwards fast. Yet as a parting shot some of it's designers struggled and put out a stunning and controversial show car just after the Geneva show. Designed as a modern interpretation of the 50's ALfa Romeo BAT cars, here's the BAT11

Hi Guys,

any body know a Ford Capri for sale?

:action-smiley-060:

The paper would be a good starting point, besides which, an Alfa Romeo thread is not the greatest place to pose this question.... open a new thread if you must, but be aware that questions like that sometimes will not be answered...

After a few months of complete "I will never have anything to do with Alfa again !", I have resumed maintenance on my Bertone. New starter, a finished interior and a fixed exhaust.

How's your Bertone Dayan? Can I see some pictures??

Hey Great to hear from you Mika. Glad also to learn that your coupe is almost ready.

Mine has just about finished the body work. You met the guy who did it so you know how slow he is. Anyway there were so many areas that was messed up by the previous restorer/owner....whoever.

Next week it will go into the paint shop. I'm trying to figure out which red. I'm thinking about this red from the post war 6C Barchetta racers. I want the white circles on the doors and the serpent and cross on the bonnet in white too. What do you think?

The Alfetta is static as the guy who was to assemble it let me down (the story of our lives in SL). Now it's with another garage. I foresee both cars getting completed almost together.

Hi Dayan, personally I think the snakes and "alfa romeo" stickers make it very ordinary, a car like this is best bloodred with a white part on the nose :) it's not a 155. it's best if you find a good example on the internet of how other people did it, as it is difficult to come up with a great design yourself. I saw someone with the sump-protector painted in the Italian colors, it's a modest but nice effect.

i am looking for a great 405 Mi16 again, I think I've found a nice red phase2 with only 100k. Then the alfa will be just for weekends (it's way to expensive to maintain if driven daily, it's just too unreliable). The Morgan +4 supersports has driven it's first mile this week, the gearbox is very noisy

I get your drift. Don't worry I will try before I commit. I like the snake and serpent but there won't be ALFA ROMEO text. just those two individually.

Yes the white on the nose is also an option although I might opt for yellow instead. Blood red.......do you have a pic? The color I'm thinking is like the one below.

Mi16 yes nice car. But can't you get something like a 156 V6 for that price? Or how about a 155 Q4? Great to hear about the Morgan! Send pics when able.

Hi Dayan,

I like deep rich feeling of that red, i think it's a exotic choice... B)

Thanks. I'm trying to find the exact code. It's a rare colour for Alfas. Used only on post war 6C racers. I've asked one of my friends who's in touch with the Alfa Romeo Museum to send out a mail and check. Let's see what he comes up with. Btw next week she'll be going into the paint shop  !

GTAM need your help ! well your advice,

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ALFA-ROMEO-156-T-SPA...1QQcmdZViewItem

I noticed the above on Ebay, Now I think the problem described sounds like a Cam Variator problem, what do you think ?

Also in your experience if buying a 156 is buying something close to 100K miles ? cos there is not much of a second hand market for these cars over here but for what they go for seem like a bargain to me ! (par the high insurance premiums !)

The link does not respond.

Cam variator issue is very common on all the belt driven twin spark engines. As you start you will get a diesel like rattle from the engine and it dissappears after a few seconds. According to Indika there's no harm whatsoever in running the engine with this defect. It only sounds bad.

The replacement part is said to not wear off but the one I got from Singapore did wear off after a year. Could have been an old stock. The Sing guys are such crooks.

What you really need to verify is when the cam belt was replaced. In UK the recomended mileage for change is 30k Miles. It has to be done by a specialist and the adjusters need replacing with the belt. Or else the chances are it will snap and ............

bloody ebay links !

If at all interested go to motors.ebay.co.uk search for 156 and this is one with a buy it now price of £1295 (a sports wagon with 87K miles on and registered in 2001)

This is the description by the seller

THE BODYWORK IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION WITH JUST A SMALL DENT BY THE BADGE ON THE TAILGATE,THEIR IS NOT RUST OR ANY MAJOR BLEMISHES,THE INTRIOR IS IN SUPERB CONDITION,THE RED LEATHER IS FREE OF ANY MARKS......NOW THE BAD POINT,WHEN YOU REV THE CAR HARD THERE IS A RATTLE OFF THE ENGINE THAT SHOULD NOT BE THERE,IVE NO IDEA WHAT IT IS,VIEWING IS RECOMENDED,THE CAR DOES DRIVE BUT I WOULD RECOMMEND TRAILORING OR TOWING AWAY SO NO FURTHER DAMAGE IS CAUSED,IT IS SOLD AS SEEN....IT WILL MAKE SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT THEIR DOING A VERY CHEAP CAR.....

as for the cam variator issues and cam belt changes, it sucks that the recommended interval for cam belt changes is 36K miles at which point its recommended the variater be changed as well !. At this mileage I guess its approaching its third change !

But I kind of like the sports wagons (which supposedly is the most desirable of all the 156's according to some reviews)

So to ask the question again, does this sound like the dreaded variater issue ?

No it's not the cam variator it's something else and sounds a bit serious. Cam variator noise is only on start and low revs, lasts only a minute.

Listen Don. Since you seem v interested; I have a buyers guide at home from Auto Italia Mag or the Alfa Romeo Driver mag. I'll look for it and scan it and post it for you. Or else give me your email addy and I mail it to you. That covers almost everything.
