Land Rover

They seemed to have covered just about all the eccentricities of a proper Landy :)

Yeah machan I heard about TATA's interest, but am currently in denial!

Don, you make a valid point about the interest of equity firms & the benefit of being owned by an automotive company itself.

Therefore, although such an acquisition would be beneficial to TATA, I don't really see how Land Rover would benefit much...

Under Ford ownership in particular LR was able to tap into some their R&D as well as have an option of sourcing parts etc.

However, I can't quite think of anything that LR can get from TATA, be in terms of technology or expertise. As a whole the Indian auto industry certainly isn't on the cutting edge of anything. The recent paradigm shift in the region is thanks to the liberalization and entry of foreign players into the Indian market and investment in the form of leading automotive manufacturers setting up plants...

LR will certainly have an opportunity to market their products in the region - given the substantial Indian economy and the growing presence of TATA in the region, there is money to be made...

It’s just that the thought of being owned by a company which has only been in the automotive industry for just over four decades, the majority of which has been developing buses and commercial vehicles most certainly detracts from the heritage of Land Rover.

I fear very much that if this deal were to go through LR's development, both as a brand and an entity would be stunted severely...

Tata's automotive history is littered with many JV's & technical knowledge-sharing agreements, but none of them are amiable or flattering. I fail to see any synergy that could possibly be generated between a merger of an Indian conglomerate and two British automotive legends...

Well Devinda for Jaguar much more than Land Rover its a matter of survival, and essentially its an issue of finding the best company to partner to ensure that. And mind you yes both Land Rover and Jaguar benefited technically from the input of Ford, but Jaguar particularly lost some image being though of as an over glorified Mondeo.

The fact is what TATA will bring to the deal will not be technical expertise. In truth they would be trying to get that off Land Rover and Jaguar. What they do bring is economic stability. Because Ford especially in the US has serious problems with their traditional markets slowing down, and they do not really have the resources to invest in the R&D to keep Jaguar and Landrover in the forefront of technology and innovation. And that essentially what TATA brings to the table. I mean a good example is the Proton take over of Lotus, and both seem to have benefited immensely from the deal.

What I hope is one of the auto companies who is in the bidding gets hold of these 2 legendary brands, cos after what happened to Rover MG one must fear for them both. Being a bit of a nostalgic it would be nice if it was a British company, cos then we can talk about the rebirth of the British Auto industry, but do not think very many people want to put their money on that at the moment.

And Devinda, machang I have got to know that Tata is the favourite to buy out Land Rover and Jaguar. Check out thelandroverchronicles.com for more information

I knew TATA had their eye on the takeover didn't know they are the favorites. Last I heard of this was some ex ford executive is putting together a consortium backed by an investment bank to make a bid.

Your quite right about the mondeo line dulling the Jag marque, but just thing of what being associated with Tata will do to Jag n LR :(

i too would love to see the British motor industry make a comeback, but the entire UK seems to have turned its back on building cars, except for niche manufacturers in sheds on industrial estates...

Clarkson gave entertaining take down abt the British motor industry - 3 parts - well worth watching :)

Part 1 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsZJZ_s5LK0

Part 2 -http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpertJNZymc

Par 3 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUNDM5KlUjo

.....& as for the Proton-Lotus deal.....Proton has declared yet another yr of losses - this time its upto $14 Million i belive...

Yeah that would be Jack Nasser and Equity One Partners

There was some speculation that 2 other equity firms, Ripplewood & Texas Pacific Group were interested, but the US capital market fiasco has throw all of these would be investors off...

Incidentally, all of the 3 equity fims have either Ex-Ford or Ex-Jag/LR executives on their boards....

But given the way things are going the only ppl who seem to have cash to throw about are the Indians :(

Hi Guys, I think the British Car industry died a very long time ago when the govt. nationalised the lot and BMC I think was born. Since then a succession of poorly thought out cars-Morris 1100,s Allegro's-Marina's Ambassadors-Princesse's just carried it to the grave. Land Rover was very much the exception. It remained the standard to which all the Up start Jap models stived to be. Off road at least in the uk Land Rovers out perform any other competitor from anywhere else in the world.(not Range Rover The Chelsea Tractor-) This is a true work horse of the British Farm Industry which is not known for extravagant spending! How ever for driving(Crawling) around Colombo traffic I think not! It would be horrendously un comfortable and hard to drive. Buy a Pajero, Prado, etc. etc. for that. Horses for courses as we say!

A Freelander with a k series rover engine combines the worst of all the possibilities! I am a mechanic and run a garage in a rural town in England-So I happen to know a bit about off roaders(4x4).

Land Rover Military Defender

land-rover-defender-military-range.jpg

sales could rise significantly in 2009 for Land Rover's military specification Defenders if Land Rover wins the light specialist vehicle contract for the Indian Army which is quite possible given the recent acquisition by Indian giant TATA.

Recent reports from the India Times have suggested the contract could be very lucrative with up to 55,000 vehicles needed for Indian Defense forces :o

Refer link for futher details of LR's Military vehicle portfoilio

The link says that there are 70,000 LRs in the world's armed forces! but I would think there's more.. I'm sure Sri Lanka itself has bought about 3000-4000 over the years.

Maybe gummybr can give more clarity to those numbers (that is if he doesnt have to kill us after he tells us :D )

hmmm wasn't there a story circulating sayin the govt. bought in 5000 or was it 500 Defenders last yr (or yr before?)

might be true... there was a whole lot of KC- KD -plate defenders around colombo.. lord knows how many are there in the North-East....

edit: do you know if the defenders Sri Lanka gets are considered 'military spec', cos they dont exactly have anything that separates them from a civilian soft-top Defender 110... Thenagain maybe ours aren't considered military spec.. And if that many LRs are coming into SL, might not be a bad idea for the soon-to-be Sri Lankan assembly line to branch out to make soft-tops too...

Would say that during the past few years I've known there has been about 100 - 120 vehicles delivered.

But that is an understatement considering the fact that Prestiege had given whole loads (more that 100sin one go) when they had the agency.

They bought down a hell of a lot of Pakistani built Defenders (mostly 90s) last year under credit terms. So thats it but can say that there are more than 1000 of Defenders and Series LR's in the forces. I remember seeing a shorland in Panagoda Army Camp about two years ago rotting in one place ther were of course few glimpses of more but with only chassis and body parts hanging around.

OT: I say Devinda you jobless these days??? How many posts for the day machang? Looks like you've been hogging thelandroverchronicles alot...

Stunning Land Rover advert!

sure to conjure up much emotion & pride among those faithful to the Green Oval :)

Nice one machang, problem is it says something I dont like to hear. "There is only one Land Rover" like in Jeep's case.

There are lots of Land Rovers out there am I right?
