Replace Atf

There are so many concerns about replacing the ATF. Some ppl are saying the best way is by removing the sump and some are saying thru the machine. My car is a Toyota and I called Toyota lanka to verify what's the best..they said unless if they are not seen any reason to remove the sump they do it manually, I don't know what their manual system is.

Hope ppl are here have some better ideas..!!!

Thanks!

When you do it from the machine, it actually flushes the bad ATF fluid out and fills wit new fluid..I guess machine is the best..I used to do it from the machine and didn't have any problems..Only thing is after sometime clips that hold ATF fluid cooler needs to be replaced as removing and fixing removes the tension in them...

Friends,

ATF is a hydraulic fluid. The pump is the torque converter, changing it in the traditional way by draining down the Transmission sump still leaves a liter or two of the fluid in the torque converter and the oil cooler etc. My cousin who used to own his own garage in SL is now in the same business in New Zealand, he bought a flushing machine for atf and has never looked back, he says it is outstanding. He says the results after a flush and change is very much superior. Us in the UK hardly ever get involved in auto box work, We would top the fluid, may very occasionaly replace a pipe or a cooler and anything else gets farmed out to the Transmission specialist who deal only in auto boxes!

They change the fluid by the flush and replace method using the machine.

So enough evidence as far as I am concerned, the machine method seems far more superior.

Maithri.

If u dont mind, what kind of ATF do you use in your toyota? is it Type T-IV? cos i herd AISIN (ppl who manufature gear boxes for toyota) autoboxes should use Type T-IV or equivalent. not the typical Dexron II or III

I recently visited a L*ughs Service center and they told me that to change ATF using the machine, I must buy two cans (8 Litres) of ATF. Is this same in other places like KP, PitStop etc?

Dont screw up your system, do it mannually. And clean the filter inside the sump when changing. Dont get enlighted by international methods. They never use a machine for more than 3 years, 5 years max. But for us its a different story.

If you really want to use the machine, ask them to clean the filter. And try to match the colour of in-out oil, it will use double the amount of oil.

That's the same i herd. it's better to remove the pan and refill oil after cleaning the filter.

Most of the people do it this way as only a few knows about ATF changing machines. Even I did it last month to a Toyota Hiace by removing the sump and clean the filter. The advantage of this way is you can clean the filter. But you can only remove about 60-70% oil and the rest of bad oil will remain inside.

Using the machine is good as it will replace 100% with new oil but can't clean the filter. I did ATF change to my FB15 using machine at pitstop and it took 8 litres of ATF.

8 litereS? seems someone had a juise from it..when i had d Ceres i did a ATF change it took only 4.2 Liters, mind you it was a 1.6CC engine. and the FB15's are 1500CC. hmmmm..

Really 8 liters machan. I was there near the machine and also looking at the ATF changing machine's display and when the transferring process finished 7.9 liters of new oil had gone. Also the guy told me it will take about 8 liters before he started the job.

And I changed manually to a Toyota Hiace (by removing th sump and cleaned the filter) it took me only 4 liters.

so how about we drain the oil, clean the filter, flush out whats remaing using the machine?

Can be done but still you will need few liters more than the actual quantity of fluid which you need for your AT box as you are using the machine.

The ATF oil level rod indicates what type of oil you should use. Try to replace oil in a metod that cleanes your filter. Othervise ATF pump will starve if filter is not cleaned.

Just got the ATF replaced on a Jimny at Pit stop, the guy said the filter is more like a mesh and hardly needs any cleaning and they normall do not do. So only did the change using machine it took aroun 6 or 7 ltrs and cost Rs 8,500 bucks . He also confirmed a few extra ltrs was needed to flush the system.

I thought Pitstop is a good place. You wont say this if you see the filter, Yes its a mesh but needs lot of cleaning, And its not easy to clean cos small metal debris is stick to the mesh. Its like some metalic cream. They say cleaning not required cos they dont do it. But you have to clean it. It you live in Japan or US, YES you dont need to go through this hassle by cleaning the filter cos you simply dont use a vehicle more than 5 years. But In sri lanka its a different story. Some 20 year old car here will cos you a brand new price in Japan. So for us our vehicles are precious. So do the right thing. Change oil by hand... I mean ATF....! :D

So, Can I get the filter cleaned now ? if this mean I have to change the oil again its not woth it and might as well wait till the next ATF change .

Also buggers said they dont do mannualy, so should I go to a normal garage ?

There are garages which promotes manual ATF change. Its ok, you can wait until your next change. Its not that critical but better if you do it every ATF change. its a benefit in the long run.
