Kit Cars

Whats the deal with getting a kit car?

Ideally I would want to register it. And When i say kit car, I am thinking a Caterham or a Westfield kit. Would prefer to do the assembly myself.

Can they be registered?

First of all get all details from the exporter and the CIF price of the kit then apply for a permit to import control department I imported a lathe during the import restricted era in that manner in CKD form. for personal use. I do not know that system is still valid.

Any how nothing like a try. Actually it is car parts you import. You will have some difficulty in registering the vehicle as we do not have a certified authority for auto mobile inspection I think Micro cars too had some difficulty in registering their first vehicle if you approach correct party you will be able to do your project.

Few decades back a vehicle was assembled with imported engine gear box and all necessary parts Fiber glass body was build in Ceylon, as the assembler had good connections with the then government. He was able to get over all hurdles on restrictions got same registered. I did the entire wiring of that vehicle.

Theres a guy who makes KIT cars in SL & even exports them. Most of u have seen him at the motor show i think it would be a better bet getting one done from him since he has the experience.

Vince? The shelby cobra guy? Now that's a nice kit car to have

Kaluz, if u like the Caterham look have you seen the Locost approach to kit cars:

http://www.adelgigs.com/clubman.shtml

http://www.locost.ozcarnut.com/html/background.html

Easy build chassis - wide choice of engine - Cortinas, Escorts, Datsuns, Mazdas can all be used as donor cars and as a parts supply source. Right up the local SL scene, in fact! You likely wouldn't have to import a thing - the fibreglass body tub, nose cone, guards and other bits would be a doddle for a local fibreglass chappie:

http://www.whitepointer.com.au/old/lo.html - see what I mean?

Heaps of forums/tech advice on the net worldwide.

If I ever have a go at another car project - and after my last Triumph 2500 project and the spending I had to hide from the wife I'm not entirely sure that there will be another - I'd be tempted by a Lowcost. Reckon they'd be a hoot to drive.

I would love to get a Miata and then turn it into a Seven. I have a friend doing it in the US and even though there are some challenging areas, it mostly seems like fun.

But Long time ago I know there were a couple of Westfields assembled in SL. Just wondering if one could bring in a new kit now with the current rules.

Didn't a member say his proportions are a bit off and that the car was a bit larger as a consequence? [btw has anyone on AL driven any of his cars? And if so: What's the drive like? I wonder whether MoTorque would be game for reviewing one of them?]

Kal, when I was having a look at the Locost stuff a while back I was considering the Toyota 4AGE motor as the way to go given $$$ and the motor's potential. I enjoyed looking at this guy's site re the Toyota motor, really got me buzzing:

http://www.billzilla.org/4agmods.htm

You've got me thinking about these cars again! It would be fun to go really strip back to the "build one for the absolute minimum dollars" approach, wouldn't it?

Bugger, now getting interested in a project again! What have you done to me. Look at the work these guys in Saudi have done...and it's a Nissan Cedric engine up the front...mygawd, it will fly:

Woah!...great project!...It'd have been even better if they'd kept the weight down of the whole car and the engine further back and mounted lower....

Boys

The sudda fellow who is doing these cobra replicas...is he getting his cars registered through RMV?

Been bitten by this locost bug myself :):D

Trying to see all the options...

It would be a waste to spend all that energy, money and time on a locost if you can't drive the bloody thing on normal roads.

Members,

If anyone is interested in building a vehicle in S L, available abandoned automobile old vehicles it is best to get a vehicle which has a chassis.

Later all available used serviceable spare parts can be fitted and fabricate a very good fuel efficient vehicle with fiber glass body.

Knowledgeable and facilities, I have in Colombo and outskirts’ Mostly what are necessary covered space man power tools and implements? I have but I am too old to go in for above type of project. If it was thirty years ago I would have definitely go in for this type of kit car project.

In 1980s I fitted Diesel engine (4DR5 ) to gasoline driven jeeps without fixing a plate on to fly wheel housing I had all free access to one of leading Lathe works in Colombo to do certain modifications. The proprietors were help full allowing myself inspecting the progress of the re sizing the shafts to various crank shaft ball racer measures. The shaft of top gear on the gear box was modified cut short or lengthened to fix the gear box to engine bell housing directly without the plate I mentioned early,

I had 3 Skoda cars. CN 1100 cc CAR 3 & 4 SRI all 2 CARS. 3 SRI skoda engine was bad therefore for that car I selected a KE20 engine in Japan Kiowa district where they do have plenty of used engines with a gear boxes. I shipped same inside a reconditioned vehicle I imported at that time and fitted same ran for few years sold due to new vehicles to get space in my Colombo residence.

Skoda chassis was ideal to do any modification due to that chassis design. I don’t think any of those are available for scrap. There are two with a leading car renter at Pamankada road. in good condition, He rent them for weddings.

uh, isnt/wasn't the petol->diesel conversion for 4DR5s fairly common? And I dont think you need to do that many modifications. As I know the engine/transmission is a almost (if not direct) plug n play. That's probably the most no-frills vehicle i have seen and works extremely simple mechanics which even a newbie will understand by playing around for a couple of hours. I know cos I got my first greasy palms on a 4DR5.

You should get together with my boss. He made a boat engine out of a lawnmower for use in a dinghy.

I doubt Uncle would appreciate your ideas on modifying his beloved Skodas. He may rent them for weddings, but he loves his classic collection. I have a feeling he rents them just to make sure they get some running time, keep the engines going without bits of them rotting.

What a coincidence that this thread has suddenly come to life today. I've been thinking about doing a Kit car as my next project. Right now I don't have the money to start but it's definitely on my "Things to Do" list. Thinking of the Lancia Stratos replica naturally ;)

I've been toying with the idea of building a lotus 7 kit car. long term project...something i can do with my son :) Need few more hardware but i'm on my way to collecting most of it.

the chassis on those have to be fabricated new since its a space frame chassis. But other bits like front uprights, rear diff etc etc can come off a donor car.

Engine too ideally something off a rear wheel drive car with a larger motor...

As difficult as it..building the car shouldn't be a problem...provided one has the patience, time and money to sink to it.

As for registering...best bet seem to be buying an older car and using it's registration on the kit car. Not exactly legal though...

But sadly i doubt our guys would include a proper process to register self built cars :(
