Interestingly my German teacher used to pronounce it as Bay-em-vay

Germans pronounce w as a v sound and v as an f sound

Hence Volkswagen = folks wagon

In German, v = fau, w = veh. If the letter W is in a word, its pronounced 'v' but if its just the letter, its pronounced 'veh'. For example, 'Werke' part of Bayerische Motoren Werke is pronounced 'verk' but the W in B.M.W would be pronounced 'veh'.

But then, Germany is Europe's largest country so there must be dozens of regional dialects out there, which makes it impossible even for the natives to agree on which is the right pronunciation.
