Sampath Gunasekera
140km/h for Alto (Japanese or Indian)…. This situation is not a surprise for me.I remember there was a warning in Owner’s manual of my previous Japanese Alto (HA11S, 1998).It instructed to avoid high speed driving through even high wind blowings .Altos are very light and really they are carrom disks at high speeds. But people don’t understand this. Sad…. Edited August 8, 2013 by Sampath Gunasekera
Rumesh88
There is one more point to add. Most of the accidents due to high speed or diver negligence involve an ad hoc driver. I hear the same story here too. In the hands of a driver who is not the regular user of the vehicle in question you are never safe.
harshansenadhir
Been to E01 on yesterday. Surprisingly all maruti drivers I've come across were doing around 80 or so.
nano31
Just because the speed o meter was stucked at 140, who could say he was driving at 140?(may be even higher or lower) Only our "police" have done so called investigations and found, according to stcuked meter. LOL Metal broken and crushing in to pieces, who care about plastic made meter cluster!! Forget about 140, Speed kills!

I too saw! but who care about plastic meter cluster, just remove the meter cluster from the dashboard and shake it, you will see! But surely the driver must have driven above 100 or even 140 or more than that. But rationale behind the stucked meter cluster is bloody wrong. It surely shows the thinking pattern of our police. I think ~80 kmph is safe driving speed in general at e1. Our ppl hurrying only for driving and they do not show it at their work. And perhaps our SL police know a thing or two as well, either from training or from previous expereince??
vishkid
Speed kills! Really? Are all the motorsport drivers dead? Nah, that was a stupid analogy - however, it's not speed that kills; it's uncontrolled speed. And that can be due to various other reasons .. but going (really) slow is not the answer. Increasing driver competence can go a long way towards this and in Sri Lanka we can only do this when the DL is applied or renewed. Our test criteria and re-testing intervals should be updated, so that the majority can enjoy clean uncongested driving on the roads. Road safety is becoming increasingly important with the increase of vehicles on the road and with the addition of highways. Safety in every form goes far beyond just passing of an examination. Safety consciousness of self and others is a part of one's culture be it while driving, at home or at the workplace. I have experienced this particular trait of different nationalities first hand. In my own experience Japs and Europeans have much better safety awareness than most SLs, Indians, Paks or Arabs, as an example. Those who passing a DL test would not suddenly realize the road etiquette and safety overnight unless it is built into their culture.

That's why I mentioned improving driver competence and using testing criteria as a medium. That's one way the culture change can be achieved. Cultural change should begin at a much younger age than the qualifying age for a DL. In fact during the age when they should be learning their social skills, the vast majority of our kids unfortunately keep running behind the Gr 5 scholarship exams. While we have the ideal .. we hv to focus on the practical (and possible)!
