Vibration When Accelerating - Ae110 Sprinter

Hi Guys,

I have a Toyota AE110 Sprinter, 1997, 1500cc Autommatic and currently having the following Issues and would like to get your professional inputs.

Vibration when sudden acceleration (10kmph - 50kmph). windows and dashboard parts are vibrating. not a big vibration like wheel balance issue. no steering wheel vibration
If you release the accelerator and press it again gently, then the vibration disappear
Car gives a "takas" noise when I tap the accelerator, or change gears (when its not running), also can feel it on floor.

Recently I have done below repairs/Services

Full service

wheel alignment/balance.

ATF changed 20000km back.

Changed both rackends and ball joints

Can this be due to bad engine mounts or CV joints or do I need to replace both front Axels ? Really appreciate your help.

Hi Guys,

Checked the car last weekend and it was not the engine mounts. all 3 mounts are ok. its was the 2 front axles. inner joints which are connected to gearbox were bad. Had to replace both with reconditioned ones. cost me Rs-6000 each. also cleaned all 4 ABS sensors as well and now running like a brand new.

Sounds like your engine mounts have gone bad. The most suspect ones are the ones on the front engine support and on the gearbox, but you would probably have to change all. A visual inspection should be able to confirm this.

+1 for engine/gearbox mounts.

If this is the case, you should get the mounts replaced a soon as possible because it sounds like one or more mounts are totally gone.

I think it's better to replace all the engine mounts rather replacing only the bad ones.

I have some what different problem, my car 2007 allion vibrates when the engine idles. No vibration what so ever when I accelerate. Idle RPM is around 800. No change when I switch off AC. Could this be due to a bad mount?

What gear are you in when this vibration happens (I assume your car is auto)?

Your problem could be a mount, but it could also be an issue with the engine being a bit down on the power, an issue with the auto box, or might just need the so called tune up (plugs have carbon build up, throttle body the same)

Its a CVT. It happens when idle, so I think the gear is nutral. When idle the RPM doesnt drop below 800 with or without AC. I'll do a tune up first and see, thanks for the tip DON.

Well, pardon me for my ignorrance, but there isn't a neutral and a drive in a CVT box? In that case the only time its neutral is when its in park mode right?

The reason why this is relevant is that when the gear is in a drive mode including reverse, the engine is engaged to stop the vehicle from rolling back and goes into the so called crawl mode. The gearbox and the engine ECU work together in this mode to keep the engine rpm stable and there should not be any vibration.

Before you spend money on a tune up, show this issue to a auto gearbox specialist and rule that out. If you take it to somebody like Nilwala if you live in the Nugegoda area, he won't even charge money for a check up, and is mechanically minded enough to point at other causes as well.

When you do it get the front wheel sensors and crank sensor cleaned.They are the easiest and least complicated of all sensors (and hence the most reliable of course) to clean but often ignored by the tune up guys. In a car that must have done well over 100k kms these sensors tend to gather fine magnetic particles on their tip over time and thus lose their sensitivity particularly at low speeds. It is just a matter of taking them out, wiping them clean and fixing back.

One quick question. Does this vibration/ "takas" appears when you release the accelerator suddenly ?
