Hey Guys, Im planning to get a X Type and i need to know of a good independant workshop for servicing and repairs. Is there any workshop like Milroy for BMW and Vishwa for Audi?

If there are any x type owners please share your expiricnses. Im planning to get a 2007 2.5L. What sort of common repairs, how the car drives etc.

The X type is a decent car with some inherent issues that need to be understood. Like all jags it rewards an owner who is actively involved in the process of running it.

General advice is stick to the later models and avoid the AWD as it has some random issues.

There are quite a few people working on Jags nowadays so you have some choice. The pamunuwa bloke is well known but personally I wouldn't take my car there as I get the impression he's more focused on selling you parts (which he imports, of course) than actually sorting your car out. I get my work done by an ex IWS guy who visits home, I like his work and i'm impressed by the fact that he isn't a know it all like some "specialists". PM me if you want his contact details, he may be able to find you a decent Xtype also.

Thanks for the advice guys, Recently i looked at a dark blue color car with cream leather interior. It looked and drived good however there was no service history and stated 5 owners in the CR. I cant buy the 52k miledge which was on the odo. Asking 3.6 Million (negotiable). This was a 2008 model.

I have used euros a lot. Got a hybrid for fuel consuption and while it does a fantastic job at that im bored of it now. Only saves me fuel and visits to the shop. Doesnt give me pleasure of driving. The Jag was the best bet under 4 million. I have heard the BMWs have valvetronic issues. The merc, not so much car for the money IMO.

You can also try N*m*l... his garage is located in Moratuwa. Close to K-Zone. PM for contact info.

I have a 2011 model XF which I used to maintain with the agents. I started to get a bit fed up with their service levels and prices. I haven't had any major issues/repairs but they used to take days to fix simple little things (like a cracked radiator hose).

I have since used N*m*l for a couple of small repairs and he has been very good so far. He came home and replaced my battery for a fraction of the agent's quote (agents wanted me to send the car to them on a truck). He also has a policy of giving you a spare jaguar (x-type) as a courtesy car if your vehicle has to be left at his garage. I haven't serviced my car with him yet but I plan trying him out next month.

BTW... Pay no attention to the Euro Haters. They don't know what they are missing!

I have 2 comments:

1. Is changing the battery on a XF a very complicated process? Dont u just undo the terminals, yank out the old, put in the new and tighten the terminals?

2. The availability of a loaner/courtesy car is indeed a value added service that many (if not all) premium band drivers would appreciate and all shops should offer! Truely impressed by this!

Regarding your first comment... Changing the battery on the XF is slightly complicated. In true idiosyncratic Jaguar style, the car tends to go crazy just before the battery conks. If not for google... I would have had a stroke! Even though you can start the car (so you don't suspect the battery) the dash starts throwing up all sorts of faults; including "ABS unavailable", "DSC fault", "Gearbox failure" etc.

When actually changing the battery, there is a bit of a process to properly earth it because there is a sensor array attached to the battery (which is in the boot). Then you have to either plug in a terminal and save all the settings of the car (some of which are system related) before you yank out the battery OR piggyback off another battery while you swap out the old one. There is also a bit of skill involved in safety removing and reconnecting the above mentioned sensor array.

All in all... not something that can be done by your average battery joint. The battery also has a relatively high 100 amp-hour rating, so its not easy to find.

On the second comment... it was this aspect that really grabbed my attention as well. When he first told me he offers a jag as a replacement vehicle, I thought it was just a marketing gimmick and he would never actually follow through. However, both times I have had to leave the car at his workshop (even for a couple of hours) he has offered me an x-type as a replacement.

As for the courtesy car, I dont know why others (especially places like TL, Stafford or A*W who can certainly afford to own a few courtesy cars) dont do that.

True...atleast for the high-end car owners they hsould have a courtesy car or at least a service to drop you off and pick you up to collect the car. To be honest I wouldn't trust the typical Axio/Sunny/Pri/(even Prado/LC) owners to be intelligent enough to take care of the loaner car. They would probably do all the asinine things they wouldn't do with their own cars with the loaner. Also, why bother...I am sure TL, A*W, etc know that even without such services these car owners would just blindly bring over their cars (even to change a battery on a key fob)

Almost all the new Euros are the same. New Audi's are worst, they come with a coded battery and you have to replace it with an original one. 80AH original battery for Q7 will cost around 40000 LKR. Worst case is Q7 is equipped with two batteries.

my car has been maintained by n*m*l as well for the last three years or so. He is pretty reliable except for date of delivery sometimes gets pushed back a few days.

I can also vouch for the weak battery problems. mine is a 98 and a weak battery got me stranded twice with gearbox faults coming out from nowhere.

On the subject of the battery, presumably it's the DIN type? So that would make it a DIN100... Exide has them, Maintenance Free with a 5 year warranty. I put one into the XK a couple of months back and am quite pleased with it. Cost was just under 40k
