P0335 - Ckp Sensor Malfunction

Martial

Question

My Nissan N16 engine was stopping suddenly during past few weeks while I'm on the road (most of times when idling during traffic jams). Sometimes the engine malfunction indicator also appeared. Then I found a problem with MAF (Mass Airflow Sensor) sensor connector where the connector wires were loosely coupled and got it fixed with my auto electrician. He removed the pins of connectors, soldered new wires replacing broken ones and fixed it smoothly. But couple of days after It started giving the problem again and at one time I found that engine indicator light remained on. I then hurried to an auto repair shop for an ODB scan. Surprisingly there was two error codes P0100 and P0335, that was MAF sensor and CKP sensor (Crankshaft Positioning). I doubt that it's possible to get MAF sensor error back because the electrician fixed it nicely. Do you think that there may be correlation between two errors? Changing the CKP sensor alone will solve the problem? Any idea of CKP sensor cost or a place I would look for it?

Your ECU probably had both error codes because both the MAF and Crankshaft Position Sensor errors gave errors at different times, but the mechanic didn't clear the ECU error log after the MAF sensor wires were secured. The mechanic should have cleared the ECU error log.

To get to know if the Crankshaft Position Sensor is faulty, the ECU error log should now be cleared and the car should be used to see if the Check Engine light pops up again. A bit of warning though, a failing Crankshaft Position Sensor can cause the engine to stall (and sometimes not start again immediately). This is because a failed sensor will cause the ignition system to fail. No spark = no combustion.

Get the mechanic to inspect the wires that go into the Crankshaft Position Sensor connector to see if it has come loose like the MAF connector.

If all of the above steps still result in a Check Engine light to come on again, the sensor should be replaced. You should be able to find a reconditioned one for cheap.

I experienced the same issue with my N16 a week back, it would cut off the engine while idling and takes a few seconds again to start. Happened to me 3 or 4 times and I took it for a scan. I got the same P0335 code and after replacing with a reconditioned one the problem went away. It cost me Rs 3500 for the sensor. But later I learned that the brand new part from A M W costs just Rs 49xx. (Could have bought it for Rs 4200 because I have their loyalty card :speechless-smiley-004:)

Go for the brand new if it comes to that :)

A small note: In this engine both the Camshaft and the Crankshaft sensors have the same part number ( ie: the same part). So both are interchangeable :)

That's pretty cheap for a brand new part. The one for the CS3 was well over 10,000 at UniMo if I remember correctly.

Well there you go OP... now you know the price and where to get it from.

Hi All,

Sorry for the delayed reply.

I got both Nissan Genuine cam/crank sensors for 4900/- from Nugegoda as they said it comes in single pack and buying together is cheaper. (I forgot to ask the price for crank sensor only) Replaced it couple of weeks ago and problem fixed.

@NRX : Yes. I think it always saves money and keep you away from trouble if you go for genuine parts for such critical components of an engine. I also called and ask A*W after seeing your post and they said it costs around 4500, but I went to Nugegoda as it was closer to me.

@Twin Turbo : Yes. I was nearly fainted when saw your post. :)

@Davy : Thanks for detailed explanation. Very helpful.

and thanks all very much for your valuable feedback.
