Diesel Engine Oil

dpbatagoda

Question

Hi dudes,

My vehicle in Toyota Townace CR42, Diesel , Auto Gear.

Recently I replaced the AirFilter with Toyota Genuine brand (Denso) for Rs. 3600, and it gave a tremendous improvement in pulling, acceleration and the fuel economy.

Previously I used the air Filter put by my Service station for Rs. 700.

I am thinking of putting the company recomended oil for my next Service.

What brand do they use?

Also, I am amazed how genuine parts can make the difference.

Err don't think only "genuine" ones can do a better job like that...the genuine ones are designed with certain safety limits etc and you do get better performance after market products if you know what to look for...

But of course for normal usage...oem ones are the safest...

Same goes for oils IMHO...

the company usually doesn't specify which "brand" to use but rather give parameters or specs for it... Can't go wrong with Castrol, Mobil if you select the variant that recommended to your vehicle :)

if i'm not mistaken, toyota recently launched their own brand of motor oils in SL.

probably packaging and distributing an already existing product and not creating their own from scratch :)

Chances are that manufacturers would always want to keep the production costs/maintenance costs down etc to be competitive in the market. It's tough to do this if you're using the the most premium products IMHO :)

If you're a premium auto brand those guys can be a bit more expensive cos that's part of the product offering  Don't think that's the case with a brand like toyota

There is an engine oil TOYOTA. That is genuine TOYOTA Engine oil. It has deferent. But I don’t know where we can buy it in Colombo. I bought it from Kurunrgala.

Also Toyota is the agent for MOBIL Lubricant. But I also very like to use Toyota engine oil.

Dude i don't think this is accurate...

first of all, Mclarens lubricants are the local agents for Mobil and not Toyota lankan....http://www.mclarenslubricants.lk/

"But I also very like to use Toyota engine oil."

And that my friend doesn't make the toyota oil any better over much experienced and established competition like Mobil, castrol, valvoline, shell etc etc

I usually used CASTROL. But one of my friend introduced me the TOYOTA Engine oil. It also 20W-50W but no thick than CASTROL I don’t know y. but when I change to TOYOTA Engine oil I feel a deferent. Less engine sound and little increased pulling power. Now it has done about 2750km but I didn’t see the colour change of the engine oil yet. I bought it to Rs.2250

I read in a article (think it's 9thgencorolla). it says actually toyota oil is repackaged Mobil oil.. even Toyota lanka reccomends Mobil XHP and other oils of Mobils. so why pay more just for the badge. :)

Genuine oils-do they exist?

Most engine makers will demand certain properties from the oil. Oil companies like Mobil, Castrol etc.etc spend enormous amounts of money on research and development to chemically engineer the oil for all sorts of different conditions and applications. Simply a case of each expert doing their specialist job, Castrol dont make engines and Toyota don't make oil.

But approach a lubricant manufacturer and ask him to produce a large quantity of oil of a certain API or SAE classification for you and ask them to package it in whatever package you want and most will oblige. Yes you can have AUTOLANKA OIL if you buy enough. Toyota dealers sell oil in their UK dealerships Branded Toyota by 5 litre cans as well as 1 litre top ups, but take your car for service and you will get the dealer's favourite at around £9.00 per litre. Go to his parts department and they will sell you Toyota oil for around £15.00 for a 5 Litre can!

Is it a case of what's best for your car or What's best for the seller(dealer)'s profits? You think about it.

In my garage I have GM oil-bought from the local vauxhall dealer in bulk,GM anti freeze-etc etc. I know that vauxhall do not make oil, they make cars. But the oil is good quality and priced very reasonabaly in the 10w-40 semi synthetic grade. I buy my 0w-30, 5w-40 Synthetic long life oils and the 5w-30 semi Synthetic elsewhere. I am a stickler for using the right oil for the car and apply the standard laid down by the car maker as the bare minimum.

So before you reach for your wallet, find out what you need for your car, the international standards are API for the additive package and SAE for viscosity, get the best that you can afford within the standards laid down by the car/engine maker- If you have the owners hand book it has all these details in it-have a read then buy.

Maithri.
