Honda Cancels 2010 Acura NSX

TOKYO — Honda has announced that the 2010 Acura NSX has been canceled. The car had reached the stage of prototype testing, but citing an economic situation that is "worsening every day in all regions," the automaker will not go forward with the front-engine V10 supercar.

The cancellation was one of a long list of cutbacks, cancellations and changes to plans announced in CEO Takeo Fukui's year-end speech. Honda had already announced it is pulling out of Formula 1 racing after this year.

The opening of Honda's new Sakura R&D Center and a new plant in Yorii, Japan, both scheduled for 2010, will be delayed. Expansion in some developing countries will be delayed, with India and Turkey named in the report, and operating officers will see their pay cut by 10 percent, while bonuses will be "reassessed" based on how business looks at the end of the fiscal year on March 31.

On a brighter note, Honda says it is still focusing heavily on development of a new sub-Fit small car with a goal to introduce it within two to three years. The automaker is also vowing to "focus all our energy on hybrids and achieve mass market penetration as soon as possible." The Insight hybrid will make its debut next month at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show, with sales to start in the spring.

Honda Cuts Profit Forecast for a 3rd Time

By BETTINA WASSENER

Published: December 17, 2008

HONG KONG — Honda, the Japanese carmaker, issued its third profit warning of the year on Wednesday, the latest sign of the drastic drop in demand that has hammered the global car industry.

Honda lowered its full-year forecast for net profits by 64 percent, to 185 billion yen ($2.11 billion), for the year ending March 31, highlighting how tough the market has become as consumers, constrained by tight credit conditions and worried about the gloomy economic conditions, hold back spending even on the smaller and more fuel-efficient cars that had been expected to help Honda survive the current crisis better than many of its rivals.

“The environment is worsening day by day, and we see no sign of a recovery,” Honda’s president, Takeo Fukui, said at a news conference in Tokyo, according to Bloomberg News. “Our task is to respond to a sharp drop in sales.”

The profit warning came as the yen rose against the dollar to levels not seen for 13 years. The Japanese currency has appreciated steadily against the dollar and the euro in recent months — a huge worry to Japanese companies because it makes their products more expensive in the United States and Europe.

Honda estimates that for every yen the dollar declines, it loses about 18 billion yen in operating profit. The dollar was trading at 88.80 yen Wednesday afternoon. A year ago, it was at about 111.60.

The rising yen has helped prompt a collapse in business confidence in Japan, which is already in a recession. Japanese companies have begun to announce major layoffs and other cost cuts.

Earlier this month, Honda withdrew from Formula One racing, saying it needed the resources to weather the downturn and to develop new vehicles.

is Honda not telling us something about thier financial situation?

or are they mearly being predently cautious and cropping all unnecessary expenditure to ensure long term survival?

Hi Devinda,

Probably Honda has more problems deep down which they would like to hide from us. But come to think of it, they will not be able to make much of a profit from the NSX. Plus they could shed the s2000 as well, because they sell only about 1000 of them in a year. Hence they want cars to make profits. But I am upset too.

Remember Nissan stopped building the skyline but replaced it with the 350z which sold in good numbers, and helped Nissan to breath a bit better. Honda could be on a plan like that.

We all have to wish that Honda will recover as soon as possible because I've been a Honda man all my life.

ok so the "world" totals (by calendar year & not including the countries, islands, and continents not included on Honda's website & with USA sales as a percentage complete w/built-in error what with calendar/model year & certain parts of the earth not on the list) be:

1990 - 2018 (USA = 55%)

  • 3 weeks later...

although the 2010 NSX replacement has been cancelled , Mugen has gone and reworked the old NSX and released an RR spec car at the Tokyo Auto Salon! :o

The car is supposedly somewhere close to 10-14cm's longer and is likely to sport a supercharged 2.4L V6 putting out close to 350bhp..

Lots of carbon fire mixed in with the pannels they say... but there are doubts about the actual powertrain..

One of the standout aero bits had gotta be the roof intake!

The JGTC cars used to have intakes very similar to that. Probably where they got it from. Probably where your friend the MR2 got it from too :D
