Driving With High Beam On- So Irritating

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone

All of us tend to use the high beam occasionaly during night driving when our "so well lit" roads do not emmit sufficient light during nights, there used to be driver ettiqute when doing so. You dip your lights when there is oncoming traffic, i practice this always as its the correct thing to do in terms of safety for other drivers. But there are idiots who dont care a damn about others and just drive on with the high beam on. Most culprits are bus, Lorry and Van drivers. Yet you find the Montero and prado dudes also doing this and with the xenon lights in most new vehicles it litteraly blinds you.

How many of you all dip your lights when there is oncoming traffic? or is your lights eternally on the high beam position?

When cops fine for tints and ?"reckless" driving i guess they should start to fine these offenders too. Just my opinion!

there is nothing you can do to the guys who dont dim their lights,

two things

1) drive towards them like suicide

or

2) fix a set of driving lights ( i have fixed four 55w driving lights on top ) so you also can do the same untill they dim the lights , Most of the time it works

Example : -

I never use the high beams since I got HIDs fitted, but I do understand where you're coming from. Even with the old halogens I would switch to dipped lights the moment I spotted an oncoming vehicle. Sadly most drivers in SL have very little road etiquette. I often do what MRF mentions in his 1st point, it's enough to make anyone who loves their vehicle panic a little.

Yep.... hitting your own Highs and drivong towards them always seems to work for me... but then there are many of the good drivers who dip their light from afar when they see you coming.

Montero, Prado, ect are mostly driven by drivers who won't care or who has the Boss-ge Una... still, driving towards them with your HBs always work... :)

This was a decipline I had since early days of driving and still I do, but sadly most of other drivers tend not to do specially those who has driving position so high, bus/lorry drivers.

Used to do the first trick MRM mentioned but one day I did it and what I last saw in the mirror was that vehicle taking a sharp left turn and going to the curb. Don't know what has happened to that vehicle and don't do it around much.

just what I do..

once i managed to freak the hell out of a leyland bus driver overtaking on the wrong side from the opposite direction (this was during day, but was a suicide attempt :) )

This is the first lesson i learnt from my father when i was a kid. 90% of my driving done with low beam. But it's very irritating when others don't understand the basic discipline and importance of have two beams even.

Sorry for reviving an old thread, but this is something that I've been waiting for. Wonder how they're going to implement it.

English translation:

Police headquarters says that they are planning on charging a fine ranging from 3000 - 5000 from drivers who continue to ride with their high beam on.

Another thing they should quickly do is take out those irritating escort vehicles of V*P's and at time choka fellows.

The other day a black, fully tinted defender drove straight into me with like 6 high powered lights on. The road was only single lane so i too switched on my lights and drove into the moron. The laws can't and shouldn't apply to only the masses whilst some high powered monkeys are having a ball breaking them

Yeh.. This is something that i've been waiting for so long... but wonder how they are gonna implement it propperly.. Read through the thread and glad to see that its not only me who drive towards the idiots who doesnt switch to dip when they see on coming traffic... And yes, it really works fine..

One thing i wanted to ask for a while,,, is all D*MO Batta shits come only with high beam.. cuz all D*MO Batta's i've encountered are having very powerful lights and they never switch to lower beam no matter what you throw at them...

Hmm… I haven’t come across one. In my case they're those new three wheelers machang. Instead of one light on top of the front mudguard, now they have two lights mounted onto where the signal lights were. And they are directly on the eye level of an average car driver. Those things blind you for a few seconds sometimes. Some of these buggers probably don’t even know that there is a low/high beam switch.

Totally agree with you. I too have a feeling that there will be certain “exceptions” when it comes to enforcing this law on the general public. Just hope this doesn’t turn out to be something like the 100km/h speed limit on the E01 where only the “high powered monkeys” are allowed to over speed.

I must have been typing my reply while you posted this, saw it only after posting. So it's not just me then.

Yup, certainly not only you mate. That sh#t is bloody annoying and the worst case is they don’t even bother to low the beam even if you flash your high beam at them!

The 1st point of MRM is a decent one. I've also used to do so, but when it comes to Buses & Lorries, to be honest, I'm taking my step back :)

I have the same experience of what Harshan has mentioned here a couple of years back. I saw that Maruti went off the road.

Most of the times, I have noticed that same habbit from Maruti cars, D*MO Battas & as well as these new three wheelers too. They might be thinking that they have got the ownership of the roads when they are in the driving seat.

I know that all the Maruti owners who are in this thread will come offence on me now, but that is the bitter truth I have experienced so far. Not sure of what may be the reason for this.

Those threewheelers have a low beam. Discovered by accident by veering towards a bugger and snapping the high beams on, which made him dip in a hurry!

Agreed! Done this a few times and it worked !

Seems like something attributed to the drivers of Indian vehicles...

Normal night time driving etiquette is to dip your Highs when approaching traffic or following traffic.

Even on the E01, you should dip your beams if you see a car ahead of you as it will not dazzle the driver ahead of you through his rear view. Its just decent driving etiquette .. something seriously lacking with so many uneducated, unsociable types being able to buy cars through the permits scheme and what not. Their lack of self esteem reflect on teh way they drive with xenons on high and all that.

I have noticed that though many are completely oblivious to this, some still do reciprocate if you dip your lights for them.

Was in N'Eliya over the weekend and the Goday Posse in their Navaras thought it was manly to overtake all the cars going up hill in severe low visibility mist with their Xenons on high and Shihan Mihiranga playing off their Subs.

I was praying to any listening God to make them slip and go down a mountain, hopefully killing all inside... while not destroying any tea bushes... :)

BTW, what should be the behaviour on E01 ? I tend to use high beams all the time and experience the same from most of the oncoming traffic. But it is not that much disturbing as if it was on a normal road ...

The etiquette in motorways is the same. It is useful to switch to highs when you are driving on an unlit motorway by you should dip as soon as you see an oncoming driver on the other side to avoid dazzling him and causing an accident. In British motorways drivers will flash repeatedly to remind you to dip if you have your high beams up.

Machan what you have experienced was the low beam of crappy Batta. :)

The best thing to do is stop or slowdown your vehicle when you encounter a vehicle equipped with xenon lights at high beam. Never mind about the other vehicle hooting from behind. Its the best way to save us and the vehicle from these showoffs.

Travelling on E01 full length up/down weekly at nights.and most of those vehicles are on high beam , but doesn't irritate as in a normal road, may be the barrier in the middle is obstructing the beams to eye level,
