2016/2017 Toyota Allion Vs Premio

TarragonTV

The latest versions of Toyota Allion and Premio was released in mid-2016. The two models has come with significant design as well as technological improvements. This time, Toyota has blurred the boundaries of the design in both of the cars and given a one common overall design to the front and the back while specifying 2 different levels of detailing and trim. Despite that fact, the design this time is really impressive. Firstly, let's watch the video that we did as the comparison between the two cars.

The 2 cars have been built on the same chassis as the predecessors', the NZE-260. but in the exterior, the hood (bonnet), front fenders and the front and rear buffers have been redesigned with different levels of detailing. The front lamps are LED including the head lamp. Tail lights are a combination of both LED and conventional lighting. The ground clearance has also been increased a bit which is a better sign.

This time, there is no "G-Superior" in the Premio. Instead the "EX-Package" as the highest option level in the Premio and G-Plus in the Allion. In the video, there are those highest grades.

The Premio that we took to has the New body colour which they call it as "Dark Red Mica Metallic" which is more Redish than the wine-red of the out going version (Different colour codes). The white is all the same and it is the Pearl-white (metallic white) in the video.

The 2 cars are equipped with more sophisticated technological aspects. Mainly the safety features like,

High Beam Assist: Which will control the high beam (Head light) by it self. When driving at night, due to the HBA system we no more need to put the lights into Full or Dim. When a car is coming towards, the system automatically dims the light and immediately after its passed, the lights are put into full.

Lane Departure Assist: The system will give a warning if the driver is crossing between the lanes unsafely. The display in the dashboard displays the regarding information.

Pre-Safe Collision Assist: The car brakes by itself if the driver did not take necessary actions in the situation where a collision could happen. The system works under the speed of 50Km/h. It is the Same as the CTBA which came in Honda. Additionally with the ultra sonic sensors on the front and rear bumpers (buffers) the system detects if there are short collision objects even when the car is moving in a tight parking lot. The system boosts brake even the driver has applied brakes slightly which would not sufficient to stop the car. The on dash display visualizes how close you are to a collision object.

This time they have added the Engine Auto Stop function which turns off the engine when it is in idle in order to maximize the fuel efficiency. For an instance, when you are waiting for the green light, The Auto Stop will work until you take the foot off the brake pedal. Immediately after the brakes are released, the engine comes up and ready when your foot reaches the accelerator (no delay).

Wow! These techs are like from out of this world. I can't recall these even existed in the past decade or will exist in the near future. Maybe that's why these cars are so expensive, even close to a brand new Audi A4 or a BMW 3 series. Keep it up your good work fellas.

By the way it's too bad to hear that they dropped Premio G Superior package. As I heard there's no such grade for 1.5L version, but comes with1.8 L version. But Toyota Japan specially manufacture these 1.5L G Superior version for Sri Lankan millionaires( redi mudalalis) who are so concerned about saving some fuel on their daily 5km cruise to their business place a.K.a.redi kade.

Thank you very much "The Stig". Hope you have subscribed the channel. :D

In fact, in the previous version also, no one specifically manufactured a 1.5L "G-Superior". It was just a matter of sticking the badges by the local importers (before or after shipment). The Electrically adjustable seats came standard in the EX-Package in the previous version after the year 2013 or 12. So they marketed the thing as "G-Superior" 1.5L with electric seats. The truth is, G-Superior is only for the 1.8L and not for electric seats or anything. :)

EDIT :

The truth is, G-Superior is only for the 2.0L

Which 2 "ramishkad"? and what is the brand of your on-dash-cam?

That thing doesn't come with a good sound system?

The player is an option where the customer need to specify the inclusion in the production procedure (which costs some high additional charges) else it is up to the user to fix a one with the favorite brand. And thats why the player is not coming with brand new cars. Additionally it is worthless to request the option because even the FM frequency range of the japanese set is incompatible with what is in here in Sri Lanka.

Not true...like I mentioned in my previous comment...please do your research when stating facts and figures (which apparently have disappeared again) if you want credibility from actual car enthusiasts.

Toyota had the G Superior and G grades only for the 2.0L variant NOT even for the 1.8L variant as you have mentioned. With the current facelift I believe the 2.0L now comes with G and G Ex Package. I am not sure if you have noticed, but Toyota is trimming down the grade variation for the two models (in the Premio you will notice that 1.8L grades and 1.5L grades have overlap)...that is their typical strategy for phasing out the model (in lieu for a new model or a complete exit)

As for the 1.5L G Superior... the Premio dealership line (Toyopet stores) did offer an official "G Superior" package as a dealer option package for the 1.5L variant. So whilst on paper the 1.5Ls were F grade you could get an official Toyota dealership G Superior accessories package on it. Granted these options were merely cosmetic and were far less than what you would get in the actual 2.0L G Superior and G grades.

To be fair to your statement....yes true...there is a strong possibility that our devious and loving car sales people (and I am sure most of them did) just made up their own "G Superior" packages for the 1.5L.

For most cars the player is a DEALER OPTION so it is not part of the "production process" as it never gets done in the "production" by Toyota unless it is some sort of integrated vehicle monitoring/control/ thingies.

Typically, Toyota dealerships have a range of AV devices officially assigned to their dealerships which buyers can select at time of ordering the car (you can check the available units if you go to the toyota website and configure a car) is not too much expensive than getting a similar unit outside at an AV shop or a place like AUTOBACS in Japan with installation...so there isn't that much of a HIGH premium.

I think you meant "And thats why the player is not coming with brand new cars" to Sri Lanka.

Oops Ive mistaken the 1.8L thing. You are correct it is not 1.8 but 2L. I will edit my comment in that. And im sorry that im not sure about the Toyopet dealership package may be you are right but in fact toyota normally doesnt offer customizations between different versions (we too make requests for factory-customized vehicles through Toyota for from-the-scratch production) because even the previous Allion 1.8 came on a different chassis. Anyway, I'll explore more in that fact and thank you for your interest and sharing information with us. It is highly appreciated. :) Stay tuned. :)

We are getting the Catalogs which has mentioned with all the specifications and additional equipment that have the possibility of inclusion with the respective models. There, as you have mentioned, Toyota offers different devices with different features but they are not cheap indeed. would start from Rs. 80,000. The main reason they are expensive is that they are not just entertainment systems but "InfoTainment" systems in which the VICS has also been integrated. Above all, it is anyhow worthless to fix it from Japan due to the language and the compatibility. That is the problem. Not only to SL, factory releases the units without the infotainment. Only for the Japanese, it is worth fixing a system from AV Shops in japan.

Thank you very much for your concern iRage. Keep in touch and we would like to hear more from you. :)

Yes factory releases the car in Japan without the AV system..unless its some sort of integrated system..but the brand new car which the Japanese customer gets has the AV system more often than not....so it is just that almost all cars that are brand new to SL come without one. Which unfortunately get fitted most of the time with crappy Chinese models.

Not to sound rude, but to be honest it really doesn't sound like you check anything  in your reviews or some comments (thus, the comment about the G Superior...any look at a catalog would show that G Superior was a 2.0L variant EDIT: Just saw the previous post about making a typo :) sorry....or the fact that the safety features are bundled as part of Toyota's Safety Sense package which is starting to get rolled out on the entire line up). Also, most packages (like the G Superior) that come out have separate fliers which gets changed quite frequently. So interesting to find out how freq you do get these flyers and catalogs. Like I said in my previous post...if you want car enthusiasts to take your reviews more seriously you need to be more professional in your journalism (which is what you are doing....but then again professional journalism in SL is a joke 90% of the time so really can't hold it against you)

1. Site references for your facts and figures properly....For example...how did you get your fuel figures in the review ? Manufacturer gives only combined cycle figures....but you have separate city and highway figures...how did you get it ? did you test it yourself ? or are you just repeating what owners or car sales people say ? (which is complete hog wash)

2. Show some substance in your deductions/analysis...You stated that the Allion has more ground clearance than the Premio. If both cars have the same tire/wheel size, same frame, same suspension and the Premio doesn't have any under hanging body kits...how is it that the Allion is higher than the Premio ? Is it the weight ? (if so would Allion and Premio have different fuel figures ?).

3. Also..if you did do the background checking you should know that this particular model is not the NZT frame. It is the T260 series frame. The same car with the 2.0L engine is ZRT261 (which I am sure you know since you look at the catalogs).

Like some of the above comments show...right now the review is just some guy filming two cars saying the same flowery lines the car sales guys feed to the every day Joe...

Anyway...kudos....hope the output gets refined in the future...there are quite a few scenic and quiet places for filming.

Its really confusing to figure out what you are trying to say...sorry.

You get manufacturer options/packages and dealer options/packages....please look up the difference of the two.

I have no idea what you mean by "toyota normally doesnt offer customizations between different versions".

Different versions of what ? What happens is Toyota only has the base grades and packages. The dealership line (the entire dealership line) quite often takes those base grades and offers additional packages that you can add on top of that. These packages are Toyota authorized packages.  Usually the packages are offered on a particular grade/model. However, in more cases than none, some components of these packages can be purchased separately for different grades.

Manufacturers like Toyota does not offer true customization. They only offer a select set of choices for each model/grade..which is not pure and true customization you might get from a European marquee. When you order a car from a Toyota dealership you pick and choose the specs from the manufacturer and then the specs from the dealer (most would not even realize which is which as they really don't need to). So when you say you order a car from scratch from the manufacturer...you actually don't get a car from scratch from the manufacturer....you get a car from scratch where the manufacturer does a certain part and the dealer does the finishing (in some cases even things like fog/driving lamps, body kits, etc...are installed by the dealer...nit the manufacturer).

I don't know what you mean by the previous 1.8 came in a different chassis. The previous as in the pre-facelift variants ?

If so...not true. The chassis (as you call it) is the same between the 1.5, 1.8 and 2.0 variants and entire series came on the T260 frame. The 1.5L was NZT260....NZ because it had the 1NZ engine...the 1.8 was ZRT260 because it came with the 2ZR engine and the 2.0L was ZRT261 as it came with the 3ZR engine but 261 to differentiate it from the 1.8L.  In the model codes the last letter+digits identify the frame/model type..the first few letters indicate the engine....just because it is NZT260 and ZRT260 and ZRT261 it does not make it different chassis.

Isn't it nice when you have some kind of AV system installed already when u r spending more than 7Mil? Its up to the user to get it changed or keep it as it is. its not something that car sellers has to decide, these are all marketing gimmicks made by car sellers. Good old days we got some really good AV systems like pioneer carrozzerias.

BTW, this is not a forum like elakiri, people here knows and has some taste on good vehicles.

First of all, Tarragon is a car sale guy. Obviously the review will be targeted at peddling overpriced pieces of sh*t like Premio and Allion. Like any car sale guy's review, it will not contain any technical depth or knowledge about the actual Japanese market (like irage pointed out).

Buyers have much better options than Premios and Allions for 7.5 mn price range. So car sale guys are desperately looking for fools to sell the allions and premios.

It is really impressive to see the interest within you for the content and thank you so much for these genuine, factful feedbacks and criticisms. This is a real push to figure out how the future work should be carried out. Our target is to make information available organized. There what we realized with these expert ideas is that the information should be related to different levels of justifications which would match all the levels of knowledge and expertise that the readers possess. This is just a beginning, meaning we can enhance but you are the drive force. Thanks again and keep in touch. Let's grow together...

the fact that you can take criticism (constructive or otherwise) hopefully is a sign that you (even if you are a car salesman) are sincerely trying to achieve something more than just peddling off cars. So I will continue to give you the benefit of the doubt.

Which 2 "ramishkad"? and what is the brand of your on-dash-cam?

Transcend DP220. I meant forward collision warning and lane assist. The FW collision warning tends to give false alarms at long distances and the lane assist will bleep even when you legitimately overtake. I've only enabled these features to activate only when the speed is 100+. Otherwise it's just annoying. The camera has good video quality and GPS but don't buy it just for the collision warning or lane assist.

My nearly two year old Axio has these exact same features. It's called Safety Sense C, and there's Safety Sense P which also watches out for pedestrians in addition to cars.

Well..most of the tech has been around for sometime...even with Toyota...its just that they were either limited to the high end models or was only available as an optional accessory. Its just that now Toyota is bundling it up under its safety improvement banner and rolling it out on to the entire line up. Even out of the Japanese brands Toyota is quite late to this game....
