I think you are missing the point. If you read the daily mirror article more carefully you'll see the idea is to kiss your a$$ goodbye and jump into backseat every time you see a pedestrian or a guy on a bike.

not saying its their fault that they got themselves killed. but almost all the people who died weren't in a car. and I think that's saying something

As crazy as it sounds one of the reasons for the increased level of accidents is the newly done up roads.

People always tend to speed, as vehicles move much better and faster on roads than they would in a road full of pot holes....

Wrong cause. Its not the fault of done up roads. Its the fault of undisciplined people, both drivers and pedestrians.

Even yesterday morning, I was waiting at a crossing to cross the road, a woman crossed from the opposite side, a Demio stopped to let her cross (He was being quick so he did stop quite hard) and he was whacked from behind by a Pettah bound Leyland bus (Who was also coming quite fast but obviously didn't have brakes that were good enough). Who do you want to fault with, the guy who stopped hard in front or the bus guy behind?

You are right its definitely the fault of undisciplined people. But there is a definite increase in the average speed of driving due to the good roads. I have personally experienced this as now my commute to work takes a lot less time.

Increase in average speed can be achieved without increasing top speed at any point. Less traffic can contribute too.

Tested with a GPS tracker BTW. On each drive, peak speed would be around 60, but the time taken can vary upto 20 minutes.

I for don’t agree that speed & good roads are the main reason for the same, I too saw the article & the news on TV – clearly Stupidity, Carelessness , not knowing basic road rules.

The sad part is about the Payagala incident – Apparently a top politica’s sisters son had been driving . knocked down 3 people in a row before coming to a stop.

Driving schools & the whole license issuing process is to be blamed. My view

In the payagala case I seriously doubt if any driving school or driving license procedure could have prevented it. Say this guy WAS stopped by the traffic police suspected of being drunk and then FOUND to be drunk. How do you think it would have gone? It would have been another case of a mere " Do you know who I am? I am XXX of YYY minister", and the drunk A*hole would have just driven away. For all we know this might have even happened. its not like the cop who stopped the guy would ever step and admit to it.

Its taking to a great episode now

DNA test to confirm suspect in Payagala crash

"The police are to conduct a DNA test to ascertain the identity of the suspect who is in police custody over the death of two cyclists who were knocked down by him on Saturday night in Payagala.

According to those who were in the vicinity of the accident, the driver of the vehicle was the nephew of a Deputy Minister.

However they charged that the police have another 22-year-old youth into custody with regard to the incident."

what about undisciplined pedestrians mate? that woman ought to have noticed that the vehicle approaching her is not travelling at a speed to stop smoothly. and what did she do after the crash happened? walked away quietly and went on with her life as if nothing happened? while that poor motorist had to deal with another moronic bus driver?

I find this a very unnecessary tax on the motorist. pedestrians don't pay anything for using the roads (fuel duty, revenue license fees) and whenever they are at a crossing they think they got a god given right to cross whenever they like. and whats gonna happen if we swerve between them or don't let them cross because we can't stop? there's a cop waiting around the corner looking to add something to his daily booze budget,

I think ultimately we are left with two choices the leyland bus up your a$$ or having your car torched after running the idiot over.

why the hell can't these cops just lock up these idiots in blinkers without taking the poor motorist down?

I think it's the bust driver at fault. He should have stooped. Problem is most of our guy’s Tailgating. They just can't stop.

A bus is very heavey and its not like they have disc brakes... so it cannot stop immediately. I know u need to keep a fair distance but its not always easy.

So if someone suddenly stops in front of u you cannot entirely blame it on the bus driver, although from a purely legal point he is at fault.

Seriously? not maintaining a safe distance is NOT a reason to blame?? And if he wasnt paying attention to the road and if that car wasnt there he probably would have run over that woman himself.

Exactly, see? Its hard to pin the blame like that. The law makes it easy, its the bus drivers fault as its his front end. But as you can see on this thread, everyone can have a different opinion

what about undisciplined pedestrians mate?

First line in the reply you quoted dude :)

There is usually a cop at this crossing, he generally controls the peds and traffic, but he wasn't there this morning.

1+

even the truck doesn't stop easily due to the weight problem. All four wheels stop but the intertia carries it a few feet forward.

Drivers of these vehicles should know how good/bad braking their vehicles have and maintain safe gaps whenever possible.

Just today a vitz in front of me braked suddenly after the chap noticing a pothole... After rear ending a psd escort jeep once, now i rarely take my eyes off the road so managed to react in time and stop my truck.

Ever driven a Ashok Layland bus ? its difficult to spot the break lights from that height. So u need to keep a really BIG distance, which is not always as easy as said...

Agree with you upto an extent. Yes pedestrians should look and see if it is safe to cross even at a crossing line, without just jumping in like they own the effing road. and unfortunately that is what most do. But then again its not like there are laws in our country for this sorta scenario and i dont there are anywhere in the world. So the best we can do is drive safe and hope we dont have a leyland bus run up our ass. It all depends on your luck

I was talking in general - I did'nt intend that the Payagala case was due to Driving school not doing it's job - Y do u own one ??????

But it all boils down to haphazard issuing of licenses – U can get a license without going for a test

U know how hard it’s to get a license in another country ?

'mazdaspeed',

I totally agree to your post. (U can get a license without going for a test). it is only 10 Peacock papers.

All driving schools bribe moto driving examiners.

Bribing is the only way to get the license if not you will be failed on the test drive .Examiner will find some mistake and fail you have to go for a retest. Then you get fed up you eventually bribe the examiner witha 1 Peacock paper. This bribing motor examiner is going on for decades in our country.
