*Whistles* Man, that is a serious piece of kit. Those custom badges and carpets alone must add at least 50bhp! Holy Cow! What an upgrade!

Realities of long-time Prius ownership. Sydney, Oz owner of 2000 Prius was quoted this week $A400 for a replacement 12v service battery and $A3500 for replacement traction battery through a Toyota dealership. Redbook Oz trade-in price for the car is sub-$A3700 range. Somewhat takes the glow off ownership despite the excellent mileage generally achieved by the Prius.(Car would have been about $A40,000 new).

I've a question on these prii I see running around with normal cab companies (I've seen some 588s) Is it any cheaper than getting any other car from the company? Or is it the same rate?

Same rate... they run 'em exactly like they run the corollas; stop-go traffic, long running hours.. usual "postponed" maintenance etc... Recipe for problems IMO.

Toyota Aqua (Going to be "Prius C" in USA) Hybrid Launched in Japan

Just the Facts:

  • The Toyota Aqua went on sale on Monday in Japan, priced at the U.S. equivalent of $21,703, previewing the 2013 Toyota Prius C in the U.S.
  • Toyota said the Aqua has a fuel efficiency of 83 miles per gallon.
  • Toyota said it plans to sell 12,000 Aquas per month in Japan.

TOYOTA CITY, Japan — The Toyota Aqua went on sale on Monday in Japan, priced at the U.S. equivalent of $21,703, previewing the 2013 Toyota Prius C in the U.S.

Toyota said the Aqua has a fuel efficiency of 83 miles per gallon on Japan's JC08 test cycle and 94 mpg on the official 10-15 test cycle.

The Aqua is powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine rated at 72 horsepower and an electric motor rated at 45 kW. The combined output is 98 hp providing 0-60 acceleration in less than 10.7 seconds according to Toyota. The motor is fed power from a nickel-metal-hydride battery pack.

Toyota said it plans to sell 12,000 Aquas per month in Japan.

The Aqua name, which means water in Latin, is "meant to break the conventional image of hybrid vehicles, becoming something fluid and not constrained to any one shape or role — like free-flowing water," said Toyota in a statement. The Aqua targets such vehicles as the Honda Fit Hybrid in Toyota's home market and is designed to attract younger buyers seeking a less expensive hybrid.

The Toyota Prius C concept debuted last January at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show, showcasing a "value-oriented" hybrid bound for U.S. showrooms in 2012, said Toyota at the time. The production version is expected to be unveiled in two weeks at the 2012 Detroit show. Pricing has not been announced on the Prius C here.

Toyota said the Aqua will be offered in Japan in three grades — L, S and G — with the hybrid topping out at the U.S. equivalent of $23,756.

In Japan, Toyota's TRD performance division introduced sporty versions of the Aqua. The Aqua TRD features an aero body kit with front spoiler, side skirts, roof spoiler and rear apron/diffuser. Hardware upgrades are limited to lowering springs, stiffer shocks, larger alloy wheels and chrome exhaust pipes.

In Honda Civic Hybrid it works the other way about. In traffic it consumes more petrol since Engine does not go off and in High way it does better.

This is false information. One of my friends got a Honda Civic Hybrid manufactured in 2009 and it's engine is stopping if you keep your foot down on the brake when the vehicle is not moving.

In hybrids, every time the engine stops when you're stuck in traffic and move off, which battery does it use to start the engine again?

afaik if you keep the AC running the engine will not stop since the ac compressor is engine driven in honda insight and civic models. whereas the prius has a electric driven ac compressor.

The HV battery. But there's no starter motor. The traction motor will turn the engine for starting.

Yes, this will happen only the AC compressor ( not the blower) is disengaged auto or manually. As long as the AC compressor is engaged engine will continue to run. This is a major drawback of Honda.

U need to update your knowledge about Hybrids.

Honda hybrids too has a electric motor attached to the compressor, so that when the engine is stoped it can keep the compressor running.. Since its fitted with a smaller motor it does not cool as when the engine is running... when it detects it cant hold the cool no more the engine kicks in... if the temp is OK the engine will not start unless otherwise the main battery is getting discharged...

Get your facts right before talking of drawbacks...

Wrong: Prius is not slow, it has better pickup and pulling power. Can compete with any other 1500cc engine normal car. I have driven a prius and it's pleasure to drive than other cars because it's quite, comfortable and better ride.

Clearly these "other cars" you have driven weren't very good ones in that case...

When you use comparatives, you're supposed to tell us what you compared it to. Better pickup and pulling power than what?

Sure it can compete, doesn't mean it will win though. And obviously it _should_ have better comfort than your average Maruti Suzuki.
