Classic/collectible Cars

Sylvi, are you aware of any 70s Holden in good nick in Sri Lanka?

Hi Crosswind this morning I saw a brown/bronze HQ Kingswood on the Thalawatugoda - Kotte Road. It was parked outside the garage that repairs Hillman Hunters among other old cars. There's a very poor looking Fiat X 1/9 in there too.

The good news is the Kingswood's body looked good from the distance of my passing car. The bad news is the number plate was 64- :( . But it is definitely possible to get a I6 or V8 from Oz.

The GTO was not able to gain favorable reviews compared to the FTO as a drivers car. I recall that contemporary road tests said that the GTO had too much electronics numbing the driving experience. And besides more importantly I think there is just one GTO in SL?

are you referring to the car A*mal transformed/raped into a Ferrari F40

Hmmm,

From the Japanese side how about the Honda Prelude? The first gen had quite a few innovations, including 4 wheel steering and of course, and (perhaps not so innovative) those pop-up head lamps. The second generation was also quite nice, but after that Honda sorta lost the plot (as with most things they produce now).

There's also a tasty (if a bit over-stickered) Datsun UTE up for grabs, which is supposedly one of only 2 left...

European wise, I must agree that the E30 and E34 don't quite cut classic status yet, however what about the E12 (5 series) and E21 (3 series)? Last mainstream cars to feature the shark-nose, and not too many of them around, but have seen a few. There's even a BMW 2002 somewhere too.

Thanks esdeez. Yes the Prelude is a contender definitely. It did not cross my mind maybe because there are hardly any in decent shape. Even I owned an 18- one for a while it was a JDM Si with Honda PGMI. It flew and handled well too. However it was in a poor state and a nightmare to find parts. There was a load of rust everywhere and once I got that done the electronics gave up and it would not start. It took close to a year to get sorted (finally managed to get a small electronic box from Malaysia) and I had run out of patience as there was a lot more to do. Some of the newer ones I see around look like they've been through the extra heavy wash cycle in an industrial washing machine. Even from a distance you know they've been in accidents and abused. So I guess there aren't many to consider.

E12 and E21 are already on many collectors lists and anyone will pay a premium. I'm focusing on the once people tend to miss out on due to various reasons.

Yes sorry I've forgotten to list the 300ZX. Have it on my original list here. Will add it. Supras are so thin on the ground here that I omitted it. Legacy RS 1st Gen - Again availability is going to be a big problem with the handful that survive have been raped on the tracks so much too. Besides I think the Impreza has stolen its thunder well and truely.

MR2 Mk1 is already recognized by collectors here I can see.

Give the old RS's a chance ;)

No better time to revive it. The market has shifted a lot since the first post I guess and just old cars are being pushed as classics. But would be interesting to see a more sensible list put together.

Hmm good point, the market seems to have gone nuts considering that pretty much anything old is considered "classic" now... No better evidence than the famous FB page... I'm all for widening the pool of cars considered classic but there has to be a line somewhere don't you think? As far as the majority of people there are concerned a bloomin escort is equal to a ferrari, and even an L light lancer is considered a rare and valuable car.

Recently I went to see some cars with a relative of mine. The guy is a government teacher at Chilaw so was on a very limited budget, and he was just looking for a car to get the family around....So cars like the early KE Corrollas,L light Lancers and B11s were what we were after... their prices have sky rocketed beyond belief and the owners were acting like they had a freakin' Rolls Royce on their hands...Nearly hit one guy when he tried to explain to us what a classic a freakin Batu Sunny is...

I have nothing against the Japanese nostalgia craze going on but those were the only affordable cars available for a person on a under 2 or 3 lak budget....madness!

And why the hell are people calling JDM to clearly export market jap cars?

As we have seen in the recent years, Facebook on the wrong hands can be pretty dangerous!

It's amazing how many people are using Facebook to manipulate the market of old vehicles by calling them classics, quoting insane prices and then giving comments like "it's fully worth"... yada yada yada, with the desperate hope of ripping off some idiot and laughing all the way to the bank. It's bloody disgusting. I've personally had quite a few arguments with none other than the moderator himself of the said page for over-exaggerating about some common cars and their value.

Reviving this thread again... GTam, did this article run? was it part of "the classic itch" set?

Hey yes Supra it was the "Classic Itch" which was published in four parts as it was bloody long and hard to end.

Not sure JC but I very vaguely recall a white one. Maybe Russian embassy? But the memory is very vague.

"A little knowledge can be dangerous" rings true here. Many are being duped and misled. But hey they need to wise up. There always will be unscrupulous wheeler dealers out there.

At the same time, if that's what floats their boats then I guess we'll have to just mind our business. Some people are emotionally attached to certain Cars and they mean a lot to them however crap it will seem to us. And the UK is full of it. Morris Marina and Austin Allegro owners clubs for example! :-D

While the nostalgia is understandable, some of these cars are pretty common even now and didn't have anything special to begin with. It's just people piggy backing the recent interest to pocket some extra cash. And some believe that anything built in Japan is JDM and probably doesn't even know what the acronym stands for.

Hopefully this thread will gain momentum and the seasoned veterans over here can set things straight.

In the early 80s my parents used to work at the Ceylon Steel Corporation which at the time had something to do with Russians (they were doing technical stuff and training with some new foundry technologies or something). These Russians had a couple of NIVAs at that time. I recall a few brown units and white units. Later on (mid 80s ?) when the Russians left they were used by Steel Corp. No idea what happened to them after that. Probably just rotted to the ground.

EDIT: They even had a Russian bus which was used for staff transport which had a funky shape :)

If you really like it and it's not in pieces pay and take it. Seriously undervalued here.

I have seen one in decent condition for around 800k but I also have another vehicle in mind so I might wait and look again for one in like 4 months and go ahead with a 600 for now.

But I am hoping to have both of these within a year in good original condition if I am able to find a 500 after some time.
