Puegeot 406 (2000), Honda Accord (1999) Or Nissan Cefiro (1999-2000)

Question

Hi guys,

This is my first posting. I Planning to buy a car (My first one) and my budget is around 15 Lakhs (14 - 16). There are three cars that i can afford at this price, so i need to chose one from them. All three cars not known for good fuel economy by the way.

1] Puegeot 406 (2000)

2] Honda Accord (1999)

3] Nissan Cefiro (1999-2000)

Please let me know which one is the best, My concerns are on....

1] Parts availability

2] Cost of parts

3] Second hand market

4] Fuel economy

Note: I have done lot of forum reading on these cars but couldn't find a one where all compared with one another. so please do not ask me to do a search.. :) again

Or is it wiser to go for a car with better fuel economy like Civic EK3, lancer Ck 1?

Thanks,

Wolverine

All the vehicles are somewhat the same in all your criteria :) The Cefiro is the most common though there are many variants originating out of Japan and Singapore. The Accord is the more uncommon, while the Puegeot would be the most comfortable. So the Accord will be the most problematic for parts particularly body parts while the other two are ok.

If you are concious about fuel economy buy a smaller car, Civic, Corolla, Lancer, Sunny etc

Thanks Don..for the rapid reply.. :)

Since i'm new to this field, i would like to know for which one would "you" go for.. is it ..

1] Puegeot 406 (2000)

2] Honda Accord (1999)

3] Nissan Cefiro (1999-2000)

given the budget would you go for some other vehicle than these?

and please tell me which one of above three is more reliable?

Thanks again,

Buying an old car is a difficult business. First question to ask is will this car become your daily driver. If not fuel economy isn't an issue. Second thing to consider is are you willing to put time an effort into learning about your car and taking it to a specialist. If you want something you just get in and drive its best not to go for a European car in Sri Lanka. Not every maka bass can fix it and failing to take care of it properly will be a costly mistake.

If you want something cheap to maintain, good to drive buy a CK1 or preferably CK2 or EK3. A AE110 if you can get that in your budget will be the cheapest to run in that class of vehicle.

Also don't go by the mileage on the clock or by number when choosing an old car. Always give precedence to condition, maintenance record and quality of maintenance over anything else.

Thanks mate for valuable information..

Anyway please tell me for which one would you go for from these three?... or any other car?

cheers!!! :)

I will go for the 406 or Accord if I was driving it myself. If I was leaving it to a driver it would be the Cefiro or the Bluebird SU14.

If I wanted to go for a smaller car I would buy the EK3 or CK2.

I'd prefer cefiro. but i wonder the second hand market of it, will it be the same and 2-3 years time. will I run into a major loss when selling, if i buy cefiro?

Unlikely. These cars have already depreciated enough so in our crazy market the value should hold. Bigger cars just take a little bit longer to sell. Also buy a Cefiro either bought brand new or originating out of Japan not Singapore. Search the forum, more info there.

Why do you care about what other people think? go check out all three cars. Drive them and see which one you like the best.

Buying a car is a personal choice and it should be made based on what feels right for you and the overall condition of the vehicle. Asking us which one would we go for is like asking us which girl would be have sex with. Some us like hot young skinny girls, some like matures and some like BBWs. It's all a matter of taste.

Don, when did you start a soothsaying side business??? Can you tell me if I will get prettier? Richer? Will I run in to any hot nymphos in teh next few weeks? Will I become super rich?

Please Please tell us... :)

Machan, you will become all of those tomorrow!*

Terms & Conditions apply. If my prediction is true, you will do the rain dance chanting my name. If they disappoint, well then you are still ugly and poor as you always were :)

@jdnet

He he :).. You are correct in that sense... and any way thanks for the advise..

Since i have no experience of any of these cars I wanted to know what pros think about it.. that's it ... u see... Don preferred... puegeot/ Accord ... but then i said i'd go for cefiro.... :)

I saw lot of 406s on the road than cefiros... does that mean.. cefiro spare parts are difficult to find?

Thats because all Cefiros are 2L V6 and above. Sri Lankans shudder at the word "V6"! So thats why no one really buys Cefiros. I assume the Cefiro has the worst market out of the lot.

The 406 on the other hand comes in a range of engine sizes so I think thats why there are more 406's on the road. And the facelifted models are very beautiful! Nice car, but keep in mind these 406's get expensive to maintain as they get older for the average motorist. My friend had a 406 (pre facelift) brought brand new ages ago and maintained exclusively at the agents. But they sold the car recently after using it for about 15 years because it was getting extremely expensive to maintain.

I personally believe you are better off with the Accord. Most Accords are either 1.8L or 2L with a 4 cylinder engine. People mostly stay away due to the engine capacity. But its a very good car, and for a first car, its a more sensible choice out of the three IMO.

Hi,

Expensive agent's story is common irrespective of brands.I was in a delima to buy a Peu 406 some time back, due to the same reason mentioned above. But keep in mind that there are many other places(other than expensive agents) who do repairs/bring parts ,even @ cheaper prices than those of Japaneese.Recently I bought a T-belt & kit for my 406, just for 6 K and shocks for 19 K (pair) which could have been morethan 30 K for a Japaneese make.( I am cmaparing this with EK3, BJ which I owned). just my two cents.

Anyway, I agree that Accord is also a good choice in ur list.

Good luck!

Frankly, I have no idea about spares parts availability for Accord but it is not a common model (like Civic) which could be the reason this spare parts shops/reconditioned body parts importers do not stock them.

Accord is very comfortable, pleased to drive car with good performance and above all its Japanese make so most of machanics can deal with it ,compared to an europian make.......that is why I said it could be also be a good choice (I am a Peg fan though :smilie_liebe9: )

Well,i have experienced cefiro, and not bad for the price.but it has these failiures.

1.dashboard is cracking

2.less acceleration

3.very bad in fuel(better if u own a filling station)5-8.5kmpl

4.not so comfortable(but to a some extent,it is comfy)

so better 2 go for a corona as magnum said

I would buy the 406 simply for the (much) superior handling. Parts are freely available including used parts. If you are talking good quality non fake parts the Peugeot spares are cheaper than the two Jap car parts except for one of two items maybe. And all have depreciated so that issue is non existent at this level. If at all you might even experience appreciation ;)
